Atlanta Coach Postgame Quotes

Atlanta head coach Larry Drew
"We waited way too late to start playing. In the 1st half we were soft. We did not guard very well. I thought physically they did just about anything that they wanted too. We played with no urgency in that first half which I told the guys at halftime. It's not a sometimes thing, you can't just come out and play sometimes. You have to come out and start the game highly energized. We can't play normal, we can't be a team that sits back and allows other teams to do what they want to do. We've got to be the aggressor, we've got to be proactive. In the first half we didn't not do that, in the second half we came out with a little more sense of urgency. We got started in the 3rd quarter, I thought out guys did a good job in picking up the pressure. My second unit did a really good job for me at the end of the third quarter and going into the fourth quarter. We just wanted to hang around and hopefully get into a rhythm which we did in the fourth quarter when we were able to make some shots. Then Cunningham hit a big shot, he hit a big shot at the end there. We cannot wait for a half before we start playing and that's clearly what happened tonight. There are some guys in there that are going to be held accountable. As we move forward, if this thing doesn't change there's going to be some changes. That's plain and simple because I'm not going to sit back and watch our guys come out at the start of the game and not be energized to play. That's totally unacceptable.
Was this surprising after the recent talk over the weekend?

"I'm very surprised, matter of fact I'm shocked. It's not about making shots, it's not about the other team. It's about us coming out and being prepared, being energized and delivering the first blow and not being soft. That's what it's about. Clearly the start of the game, that first half of basketball we were soft. We did not play with physicality, we got to a point where it seemed like we were kind of going to get into a rhythm but we had just too many breakdowns. In the second half we picked it and again, I thought the guys off the bench did a really good job. I thought Mike Scott gave us some valuable minutes; John Jenkins gave us some good minutes. Zaza gave us some good minutes, the few minutes that I put Anthony Tolliver in there, he was impressive. We cannot come out and play that soft at the start of the game.
