Dear Colleague: Saint Francis College looks forward to welcoming you to the Arthur Miller Centennial on October 16-18, 2015. You join other distinguished panelists who are presenting intriguing papers that will stimulate discussion about Miller’s work. Your presentation is part of what promises to be an exciting conference with plenary and concurrent sessions, staged readings and performances, and critic and playwright panels. Christopher Bigsby of the University of East Anglia will be delivering the keynote address, and Enoch Brater of the University of Michigan will give the concluding remarks. In addition, the celebrated actress, Joan Copeland, Arthur Miller’s sister, has committed to present a staged reading of her brother’s work. Notable figures who have committed to attend are Emily Mann, Matt Wolf, and Ben Brantley. The conference also will feature a staged reading of a new Muslim/Syrian version of A View From the Bridge. The Arthur Miller Society is particularly happy to hold the conference in Brooklyn Heights because the neighborhood was home to many literary figures including Walt Whitman, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, W.H. Auden, Truman Capote, Thomas Wolfe, W.E.B. DuBois, and Norman Mailer, all of whom lived within walking distance of the college. Sometimes referred to as “America’s first suburb,” Brooklyn Heights was the first community in New York City designated as an historic district. In Timebends, Arthur Miller described this area as “a leafy village.” The western boundary of the neighborhood ends at the East River at the famous “Promenade” with a spectacular view of lower Manhattan, New York harbor, and the Brooklyn Bridge In recent years, the eastern boundary of the Civic Center in downtown Brooklyn has exploded with the Metro Tech business complex, high-rise condos, and the Barclays Center. I hope the following information will be useful as you prepare to visit our urban campus. Registration: I have included the registration form at the end of this communiqué; it also is posted on the St. Francis College website. Online registration is preferred. Please register as early as possible to assist in our planning for the breakfasts, lunches, and receptions. The registration fee includes the gala President’s Reception on Friday evening, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday, the closing reception on Sunday, and the staged reading of A View From the Bridge on Saturday evening. The SFC website includes a list of recommended restaurants. If you are taking advantage of New York’s nightlife, you may want to dine in Manhattan, which is a short subway ride from the college. For your information, the fall Broadway season will include a Yiddish production of Death of a Salesman that will run during the conference. The acclaimed London production of A View From the Bridge is transferring to Broadway and begins previews on October 20. At past conferences, many participants chose to get better rates at hotels in lower Manhattan or the theatre district. Travel: St. Francis College is located in the heart of downtown Brooklyn at the convergence of ten subway lines and many bus routes to and from all boroughs of New York City. There are ample parking garages; street parking is difficult. Air travelers flying into JFK can take the “AirTrain” to the Howard Beach/JFK station and then take the “A” train subway to the “Jay Street/Metro Tech” station for local hotels. JFK is a 35-40 minute cab/car ride (Belt Pkwy West to the Bklyn/Queens Expressway, exit at Atlantic Ave.). LaGuardia Airport is a 25-30 minute car/cab ride (Grand Central Pkwy West to the Bklyn/Queens Expressway, exit at Atlantic Ave.). I hope to post the conference program by August 15. However, I can tell you that the conference will kick-off on Friday evening, October 16 with the President’s Reception, the keynote address by Christopher Bigsby, and the staged reading by Joan Copeland. Sessions are scheduled throughout the day on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18.. The staged reading of A View From the Bridge is on Saturday evening; a staged reading of All My Sons is Sunday at 1 p.m. The critics' panel and playwrights’ panel are scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Enoch Brater will deliver the concluding address on Sunday afternoon, followed by the closing reception. If I can be of further assistance as you prepare for your trip, please let me know.
