Ethics PHIL 2203 NOTES
February 13 Gauthier (cont)
Review 3 Point of view from A best scenario for him Worst scenario – he helps Band B does not help
Application – How do we do it
How do we do it (make agreements you can keep and keep them)
1. Identify those parties whose welfare will be affected by the action being considered.
2. State any agreements that you believe exists between the parties (recall here the nature of agreements)
3. Chose the action that best enables the agreement to be kept.
(payoff matrix)
Further Concerns – What are objections out thereto this approach of morality
Objection: Translucencies is unrealistic
1. What is the assumption Because constrained maximizers need to be able to recognize each other, as well as straightforward maximizers to avoid them)
2. What do we mean by a disposition Personality traits (eg, introvert) crystalize in late teens disposition can be changed over the course of the years.
3. Why does Gauthier make such an assumption Ones own intuition might suggest the assumption is questionable. How is one supposed to instantaneously and accurately assess another person. If there is a lot of money at stake, negotiations won’t be brief will get to know the other party and be better able to read them. some degree of familiarity is established during these negotiations
Gauthier never says that people need to instantaneously assess the disposition of others, or that the assessments need to be perfectly accurate. slide 10 of feb 18) Conflicting agreements → which agreement was made first
