Lecture Objectives Chapter 9 - Articulations 1. Define articulation and state the functions of articulations.
2. Describe the functional classification of joints.
3. Describe the structural classification of joints: list the categories, list the characteristics of each category, list the types within each category.
4. Briefly describe and give examples of the following types of fibrous joints:
a. suture
b. syndesmosis
c. gomphosis
5. Are all fibrous joints synarthoses? What is the exception?
6. Describe and give examples of the following types of cartilagenous joints
a. synchondrosis
b. symphysis
7. Write out a simple description including structure, location and function for each of these synovial joint components:
a. joint cavity
b. articular cartilage
c. joint capsule (fibrous capsule, synovial membrane)
d. synovial fluid
e. ligaments
f. articular discs / menisci
g. bursae
h. tendon sheaths
8. Draw and label a simple synovial joint including: a) bones, b) articular cartilage, c) joints capsule (both layers), d) joint cavity, e) synovial fluid, f) ligaments.
9. Define the following joint movements:
a. flexion
b. extension
c. abduction
d. adduction
e. circumduction
f. rotation
g. inversion
h. eversion
i. protraction
j. retraction
k. supination
l. pronation
m. elevation
n. depression
o. opposition
p. gliding
10. Describe and give examples of each of the following types of synovial joints. Draw a simple diagram of each joint type showing the bones only.
a. plane
b. hinge
c. pivot
d. condyloid
e. saddle
f. ball and socket
11. Describe the temporomandibular joint and its movements.
12. Describe the atlantooccipital joint and its movements.
13. Describe in detail the 2 types of joints found in the vertebral column.
14. Compare the 2 ball and socket joints (shoulder and hip) with respect to a) stability and b) range of movement; explain the reasons for these differences. Draw and label a frontal section of the bones only for each joint.
15. Be able to describe in detail the structure of the tibiofemoral joint and the function of each component. Include: 1) bones articulating at the joint, 2) location and function of ligaments, 3) location and function of menisci, and 4) location of principal bursae. Draw and label a simple diagram showing the bones and ligmanents in sagittal and frontal sections (not all ligaments or bones will appear on both drawings).
16. Define arthritis and compare causes, symptoms, and treatment of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.
