Lesson Plan Android_#1: Getting Started. Setup.
Topic Description: Getting users set up to use AppInventor on Androids.
Assumption: Students will have access to phones.
Objectives: By the end of this lesson students should have setup/and or know the location of :

A gmail account
-
Registration for an App Inventor Account
-
Know the location of the web based tutorial information from HFOSS
-
Know the location of the web based tutorial from Google App Inventor team
-
If students are going to use phones to run AppInventor software:
-
A list of software that they need to download to their phones.
-
Completion of phone setup.
Outline of lesson:

Students should set up gmail and AppInventor accounts in that order.
-
Students should research the topics of Open Source Software and AppInventor.
-
Students should have a basic understanding of Open Source Software and AppInventor by the end of the class.

Students should have access to google notes and HFOSS notes on AppInventor Tutorials.
Student Activities:

Setting up accounts

Research AppInventor and Open Source Software on web and be able to give a reasonable explanation of what both are.

Have access to the tutorial websites for GOOGLE and HFOSS so they can prep for the next lesson.
Teaching/Learning Strategies:
Begin:

Start the lesson by giving the students a quick overview of AppInventor on the Android phone. Talk about open source software.

Ask students to briefly look on the web for references to AppInventor and Open Source Software. Have students write group definitions of Open Source Software and a quick writeup of AppInventor in their notebook/journal.
While students are researching - teach representative so set up GMAIL & APPINVENTOR ACCOUNTS:

At the end of this instruction each representative should return to their group and show their team how to set up the accounts.

While students are researching - teach rep's to Download software utilities from AppStore:

Hit the home icon to get a list of the applications on the phone. Choose the market
icon . At the top of the screen hit the search icon and tap the search box so the
keyboard pops up. Search for the following two apps:
- TTS Extended Services (Text to Speech extended service -Eyes-Free Project- Free)
- Barcode Scan (Barcode scanner, ZXIng Team - Free)
Note: The barcode scanner allows students to upload apps from AppInventor to their phone.
The TTS Extended service allows sound

Show students how to download the WORKITOUT app using this barcode
Review what we've done and get class definition of Open Source Software and AppInventor.

During the last 15 minutes of class go over the two definitions (Open Source) and (App Inventor).

Homework. Have the students look at the tutorial page for AppInventor and read about Hello Paw.
