TITLE: Extension Assistant, K-State Research and Extension

Kansas Agricultural Mediation Services



LOCATION: Kansas State University Campus, Manhattan, Kansas

Kansas Agricultural Mediation Services’ Mission Statement:

  • Education, information and tools needed to improve and restore communication, management and business skills

  • A “clearing house” to connect callers and proven agricultural resources

PURPOSE: The Kansas Agricultural Mediation Services (KAMS) is a grant program administered by K-State Research and Extension and Kansas State University. The program has been grant funded annually since 1988 through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified State Agricultural Mediation Program. KAMS provides resources including mediation, farm financial counseling, and legal advice to assist farm families and lenders in navigating uncertain economic conditions, as well as mediations of USDA agency adverse decisions. Separate from the USDA grant, the program offers farm succession planning, facilitation services, and family mediations. This position will integrate into a team effort of introducing participants to KAMS proven services and assistance, managing cases under strict rules of confidentiality, coordinating services, providing outreach and assisting with grant administration.

RESPONSIBILITIES


  1. Case management of Kansas Agricultural Mediation Services (KAMS) clients



  1. Educate program participants on the mediation process, services and resources



  1. Work as part of a team with KAMS staff, support services, and key partners in developing and managing program services and projects



  1. Help farmers navigate through time-critical situations



  1. Collaborate with the KAMS team to provide leadership in developing, organizing and facilitating workshops and educational presentations



  1. Assist in program outreach and promotions



  1. Prepare and collect confidential case information



  1. Manage program database



Coordinate social media and online tools for communication and education


QUALIFICATIONS


Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in general agriculture or related fields of study, or appropriate professional credentials

  • Understand the issues facing Kansas farm and ranch families/communities

  • Confidence in handling telephone calls with program participants

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

  • Attention to details and accuracy

  • Commitment in supporting Kansas agriculture

  • General knowledge of computer technology

  • Confidence in coordinating public meetings and training

Preferred:

  • Three-five years working with farm family issues

  • Knowledge of agricultural production and finance

  • Awareness of handling behavioral/mental health issues

  • Experience with writing and implementing grants

  • Experience in networking with organizations, stakeholders and partners to support program development and maintain relationships

  • Familiarity of mediation negotiations

  • Outreach experience i.e. farm/trade shows, public presentations


SALARY: Salary commensurate with training and experience
