Lee, I hope that you had a good holiday season and that everything is ready to go for the spring semester. I wanted to connect with you briefly to let you know that we still have openings for new and/or recent civil engineering graduates here in our Dallas, Texas office. Attached is both our flyer and Bridge Designer opportunity position description for your use and distribution. Please pass the attached information on to any interest students and/or recent graduates. See http://lowery.tamu.edu/announcements/Figg2.pdf and http://lowery.tamu.edu/announcements/Figg3.pdf.
Additionally, I did want to offer one point to help your current and recent civil engineering students make more effective resumes for prospective employers. Over the years I have seen many new graduates make a single resume and apply to dozens of (or more) open positions at once. As it has become even easier these days to send and post a resumes electronically, it is becoming apparent as a reviewer of resumes that some applicants are hardly reading a position description. Consequently their resumes are quickly passed over because their experiences do not match well with the prospective employer’s position description.
I would suggest to your current and recent students to focus on quality as opposed to quantity when they apply for open positions. Instead of focusing on volume, focus on what an individual prospective employer wants (by reading the position description thoroughly) and determine if that is a possible fit for them or not. Then edit their base resume to align with every point and/or bullet in the position description prior to submitting that resume for the position. Taking time to understand the needs of a prospective employer will be noticed by those reviewing their resume, and subsequently almost guarantee a follow-up phone call.
Thank you for your help in this matter and I hope that you have a good day.
Matt

Lee: I enjoyed our visit on Monday and appreciate your input on visiting with students.  On Thursday, February 4, I will be interviewing interested students in Room 209 of Koldus from around 8:30 to 4:30.  Please have students email me at lstone@sradesign.com to set up interview times, and I will give them a reminder the day prior to my campus visit.  As noted on our website, we do general civil as well as offer support on site development and athletic facility design.  We are a firm of about 25, so everyone has an opportunity to be actively involved throughout a project from beginning to construction completion.  Communication and responsiveness with clients and stakeholders is also an important responsibility of our engineers.
Please encourage your students to check out our website (www.sradesign.com) to see a sampling of our projects. In my years here, I have worked on several campus projects, including:

  • Pedestrian area near the Chemistry Building and Library

  • The 1990 Campus Master Plan

  • Varsity Track

  • Varsity Tennis Center

If I have time, I will drop by the CE building and roam the halls.  Thanks again for your help.

Dr. Lowery,

I recall you used to send emails to your alumni asking if we were hiring for full time or internship positions. I’m looking for 4-5 candidates for the following internship positions.

1)      Structural Designer (Internship) – Juniors or Seniors who have or will have completed structural concrete design course by the end of the school year. They would be designing drilled piers, spread footings, retaining walls, misc steel, CIP and elevated Post-Tension parking structure elements. I’m personally currently working on parking structures for Hobby Airport, TCU, LSU, OU, Exxon, and several developers.

2)      Restoration Structural Designer (Internship) - Juniors or Seniors interested in a position that requires field observation, operation of forensic testing equipment in varying environments, and interest or experience in analyzing a wide array of structural issues with existing buildings. Technical writing skills will be required as the deliverables are mostly reports. They would be recommending corrective measures for façade and structural items within existing structures of all types.

My goal is that these would become full time employees at completion of their schooling.

Hi Dr. Lowery,

I hope all is well at Texas A&M this year. Please forward the included job application link to your listserv of undergraduate Civil students, as HNTB is recruiting May 2016 graduates to fill positions within the Transportation department. This entry-Level Civil Engineering position will be a great fit for motivated EITs seeking experience with planning and design of large-scale infrastructure transportation projects. The scope of work may range from drainage design and signage planning to geometric highway design. Although I have only been working a few months, there is a clear emphasis here on the importance of continued learning for EITs in order to best prepare them for being successful and well-rounded PEs.

Dr. Lowry,

I still remember going to your office half way through my Master’s in Philosophy to talk to you about getting a degree in Civil Engineering.  I am very thankful for your advice and I made sure I took you for as many classes as possible.  You never had to loan me a pillow for class… good times.
For me, over the last 15 years I have worked for just two companies.  I worked for a large firm up until October of 2014 and then I joined another Aggie and Lowry Fan in his company, ALJ-Lindsey.  Lester has grown the company from one person working out of his house to 13 staff and we are looking to add another Aggie to the mix.
I suspect we are late to the game for May but I thought I would reach out and see if you had any suggestions.  Are you still funneling student resumes to folks like us?
I hope you are doing well and that the A&M students are smarter and harder working than we are.  Either way, I hope they are learning as much as we did from you.
Thanks,plc

Dr. James,
You probably don’t remember me by name, but I went on the France ’99 program in Sceaux—I was in a language class and John Poston’s energy and the environment class.  By the way, that program combined with Mike Rabins’ and Ed Harris’ Engineering Ethics course substantially contributed towards where I am now—a voting shareholder in a large, employee-owned firm in a national leadership position.
I am writing to let you know we are looking for 1-2 excellent geotechnical engineers that want to live and work in San Antonio, TX.  While we do not yet have a job posting, if you could communicate to students in the TAMU geotech community that it would be good to send a resume to the attention of Human Resources at the address below, that would be helpful.  Specifically, we would be interested in graduate students that have previous work experience—preferably in the San Antonio area or an area with clay soils.  Outstanding undergraduates with substantial internship/coop experience may also be considered.

Subject: Civil Engineering Technician positon on the Davy Crockett National Forest in Ratcliff, Texas
Good afternoon – my name is Gerald Lawrence. I am the District Ranger on the Davy Crockett National Forest located in Ratcliff, Texas.  We are currently getting ready to outreach and advertise an Engineering Technician position here on the Davy Crockett National Forest.  This is a permanent full time position.  I attached the job’s position description. I hope to outreach the position here shortly, and was hoping you could put me in contact with graduating students who may have an interest in working in an exciting position that gets them on occasion outdoors working in the woods.
Please contact me, or have any students contact me, to discuss how I may be able to get this job information out to those who may be interested.
Thanks, Gerald Lawrence

Master Record Number: FS2335

INTRODUCTION

This position is established in a Forest Service unit to provide technical support for engineering projects.

MAJOR DUTIES

Participates in the development, definition, and documentation of engineering design requirements under the leadership of a senior engineer. Working from specific design criteria, designs low volume road projects from field notes; reduces traverses, levels and topography notes; establishes "L" line design alignment from "p" line data; computes quantities; makes cost estimates; produces plan and profile sheets; and selects and adapts paragraphs from previously approved project specifications. Prepares sketches and develops layouts, construction details and installation drawings, plus other drafting duties including the final plan and profile sheet.

Performs land survey work that requires very exacting measurements obtained under difficult conditions, such as steep grades; frequent river crossings; or remote areas where railroads, roads, or other more common routes are unavailable. May serve as observer and leader of a small, detached observing unit performing first or second order leveling under conditions that require deviations from normal practices. May serve as lead on a crew performing varied, non-geodetic surveys, such as location, right-of-way, and property surveys.

Inspects an entire project of limited size or complexity or a minor part of a large project such as a forest road construction project that includes only clearing, grading, and drainage structures. Inspects projects under construction for compliance with plans specifications.

Acts as inspector on timber sale and/or public work road construction contracts doing routine, established inspection duties. Maintains a daily log of the project, recording facts concerning work activity, work force, equipment in use, inspection activities, accidents, visitors, weather conditions, and unusual happenings. Reports all inspection activities to the COR or ER.

May also serve as inspector-in-training on more complex projects and activities working under close supervision of the project engineer.

Dr. Lowery,

I have an opening in my department for a Civil Engineer, and I was hoping that you could post the attached employment opportunity to your listserv. Dr. Lowery,

During my time at Texas A&M (Class of ’05) I remember that you would pass along emails to the Civil Engineering students from individuals whose companies were looking for new EIT graduates.  I was hoping you might do the same to help my company’s search for an EIT.

I work for Hayter Engineering in Paris, Texas (northeast Texas, population 25,000) and we are currently looking to hire a May or August Civil Engineering graduate.  I have attached a job description as well as a brief firm overview. See http://lowery.tamu.edu/announcements/Hayter1.docx and http://lowery.tamu.edu/announcements/Hayter2.pdf
In my opinion, the biggest selling point for Hayter is the breadth of experience a new engineer will receive.  Our clients come to us with a wide range of civil engineering challenges and it is left up to us to design an economical, lasting solution.  Having started my career at an engineering/architecture firm with over 50,000 employees worldwide, I found it was very easy to become pigeon-holed.  I wanted to expand my civil engineering skill set and have found Hayter to be the perfect company to do that.
Thank you,

Chris Donnan, P.E., CFM

THE FOLLOWING POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED
May 12, 2016

Howdy:
NOTE: They have changed this to $10/hour.
The following is an unpaid internship offer, but before you dismiss it out of hand consider that
1)            You can do it from anywhere, including at home this summer, or here at school while taking classes.

2)            You will get some excellent experience working under the guidance of a registered professional engineer.

3)            You will get an excellent addition for your resume.

4)            If you do a good job, the engineer you are working for will probably give you a professional recommendation when you go up for registration, not always an easy thing to get.

5)            If you do a really good job, you might request that it turn into a paid internship.

6)            If you do a fantastic job, they may well hire you upon graduation.
Downsides are obvious.  The word unpaid stands out.  If you do consider it you should carefully hammer out how many hours they expect you to work, and to see if you could devote that amount of time.  There would certainly be no reason to get involved in such a project and then have them unhappy with your performance, even if it was free.
