Testing the Strength of Supporting Material for

Albert A. Gore’s “Nobel Peace Prize Lecture”

On December 10, 2007 former Vice President Albert A. Gore Jr. delivered a powerful speech at the Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony in Oslo, Norway accepting the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded jointly to him and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Although this speech was given over 5 years ago the statements presented hold frighteningly true in their predictions today about Earth’s Climate Change.
Al Gore became focused on public awareness of global warming after almost losing his son in a car accident in 1989. He wanted to preserve the world for future generations and wanted to educate people to save the ecosystem from what man was doing to the planet by global warming. He wrote and published a book in 1992 titled “Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit” which encompassed his political experiences on environmental issues starting as far back as the mid 1970’s and his concerns and recommendations regarding conservation and the global environment. (www.notablebiographies.com) He talks about changes that were put through legislation including his call for an end to the combustion engine along with his personal feelings about man’s disrespect for the consumption of natural resources referring to mankind being “addicted to the consumption of the earth itself” calling it “a psychic numbness.” (www.weeklystandard.com)
During the Vice Presidential debates during the 1992 campaign with Dan Quayle, Al Gore was criticized about wording in his book regarding environmental concerns that Gore “put endangered species above people’s jobs.” Al Gore debated that a “well-run environmental program would create jobs while preserving nature.” (www.notablebiographies.com)
After the 1993 election of President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore the efforts continued by Gore on environmental issues and he started a “Report Card” on the national biotech resources and ecosystem efforts including plants and animals and their relationship to the “nonliving elements including oxygen, soil, water and sunlight.” (www.whitehouse.gov/OSTP) In 2006 he founded the “Alliance for Climate Protection which was a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization committed to educating the global community about the urgency of comprehensive solutions to the climate crisis.” In 2006 a documentary film “An Inconvenient Truth” was made by David Guggenheim and featuring Al Gore’s campaign to educate people on Global Warming. This award winning, highly acclaimed documentary was instrumental in Albert Gore’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. (www.wikipedia.org)
In Gores address to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee he refers to Alfred Nobel’s reading of his obituary that was published in error and his realization that his life needed to be worth more than what people thought of him for his creation of dynamite and the consequences to human life that it caused. In this self-discovery Nobel created the Nobel Peace Prize in an effort to redeem himself in the cause of Peace on Earth. Albert Gore compared Nobel’s self-discovery to his own political criticism after the 2000 election and his desire to also correct the views and opinions of him.
He goes on to compare the earth to man and the global warming and pollution to a fever and sickness in the planet. He references 70 million tons of pollution and the daily increase being put into the atmosphere and surrounding planet. This is the poison making the earth sick and that there is still time to heal what is being done.
He goes on to talk about the climate change and the Artic thaw and unprecedented wildfires and droughts in some areas and massive floods in others. He talks about timelines that scientists predict for the Northern Polar Ice Cap “Falling off the Cliff” and that it could happen within 7 years. This was 5 years ago and we are truly seeing the affects and reality of this happening today.
Gore also talks about how we did not intend this global destruction in the efforts to create a better life and promote progress we have created other negative consequences. Again comparing Nobel’s creation of dynamite to the destruction of our CO2 layers in the atmosphere. He goes through various decades of examples of pollution that we have put into our atmosphere and how these are now radiating back to the earth through global warming.
Through the remaining speech he references inventions and advancements that were praised but now could be thought of as a contributing cause to the global warming crisis. How man is just not getting the message that there is a bigger picture than just the environment. That with the changes to the global ecosystem comes negative consequences across the globe including poverty, hunger, sickness and an overall breakdown of the world communities.
He sums up his speech by reiterating that the efforts in place to correct global warming are not enough and that more needs to be done by everyone. The urgency of this universal problem is made clear in his reference to “a vision of two futures – each a palpable possibility – and with a prayer that we will see with vivid clarity the necessity of choosing between those two futures, and the urgency of making the right choice now.” And the references to the next generations asking, “What were you thinking, and why didn’t you act?”
So true…. Five years later we are seeing the warnings that Al Gore predicted come true with the unnatural changes in shift to our weather patterns and worsening severity of our storms not only in the United States but also across the planet. This past Thursday evening, January 31, 2013 Vice President Gore was doing an interview on his new book “The Future” with Charlie Rose. I truly enjoyed watching this interview and hearing first hand his continued dedication to the Global Warming efforts. He gave some enlightening updated facts about the huge amounts of pollution we are putting into the atmosphere daily and how this is creating 4% more moisture in the atmosphere’s layer daily. This explains the increased severity of the storms today and the surges of moisture and floods. (www.charlierose.com)
I personally feel the planet is in a critical crisis and I fear for future generations and the overall health of the planet. I don’t know how we can repair what is so critically damaged. There is proof over the decades that the ozone layer is not repairing itself and no matter what we are trying, like Al Gore said 5 years ago “it’s not enough.” I try and do my small part to be green and preserve what I can contribute but we as a society have become so comfortable with advancements that are contributing to the decay of the atmosphere I pray that future generations find better ways to preserve what we have left of our Beautiful Planet.

Part 2:
The Future of Wind Energy in Pennsylvania and surrounding areas
My general purpose statement will be reflective of Vice President Al Gore’s efforts to “Educate and inform the general public about the pro’s and con’s of renewable wind energy and reducing the carbon footprint and continued detrimental affects of global warming.”
My supporting evidence will come mostly from the internet and library. I have been researching online and find quiet a mix of articles pro and con for Wind Energy in the Pennsylvania area.
I will try and contact PennEnvironment, a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization that has spoke at our local Mercyhurst College to get direct information on the projects that are currently going on in the area.
Originally I was going to focus on Wind Power in the Great Lakes but I believe that the benefits for sustainable power are important to the future of the ecosystem and future damages of global warming. I realize that there are environmental threats also to our wildlife and
There was just an article this week that announced that Juhl Wind, Inc. has made an agreement with Honda Transmissions in Ohio to build two utility scale 260 foot wind turbines for the renewable energy at their plant. These turbines are expected to provide 10% of the plants electricity and reduce the CO2 emissions by 30%. This is an industry leading environmental advancement that is said not to adversely impact wildlife or the environment.
I have found many articles against the advancements of Wind Energy, mostly because of the wildlife concerns, the initial start up cost, noise pollution and loss of the natural view to the land.
I’m very excited to be able to do this research since I have long been interested in the efforts for alternative energy and seeing an article years ago about wind turbines in the oceans. I’m afraid of going too broad. I tend to get too much going and need to work on an outline and try and stick to a few areas.

I am still working on my Thesis Statement….. but my succinct phrase may be:

Sous le vent – With the wind
