Marina Economou
Dr Marina Economou is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the First Department of Psychiatry, Medical School, University of Athens- Eginition Hospital.
She completed her medical studies at the University of Athens in 1980, while she specialized in Psychiatry in 1986. In 1988, she received a scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation to undertake postgraduate study in Great Britain and particularly at the Institute of Psychiatry, the Maudsley Hospital and the Buckingham Mental Health Service. In 1990, she obtained her PhD at the Medical School, University of Athens.
Since then, her most important professional appointments and positions include:

Lecturer and Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at the First Department of Psychiatry, Medical School, University of Athens; Head of the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Centre and the Family Psychoeducational Programme at Eginition Hospital.

Head of the “anti-stigma” programme of the University Mental Health Research Institute and of the “Depression Helpline 1034”; while since 2011, she is a Scientific Consultant of the aforementioned programmes-services.
She has played a prominent role in the establishment (1992) and subsequent co-ordination and operation of the Families Association for Mental Health (SOPSI); while since 2006 she is the President of its Scientific Committee.
Her clinical experience mainly concerns the delivery of services in the realm of Community Psychiatry – Psychosocial Rehabilitation as well as the implementation of Psychoeducational Interventions for families with a member suffering from severe mental illness.
Her research activity is mainly concentrated on Psychiatric Epidemiology and Social Psychiatry subjects such as the evaluation of Psychotherapeutic and Psychosocial interventions, the stigma attached to mental illness and the mental health effects of the financial crisis.
On an international level, she has collaborated with various universities and organizations, including the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London; while she has taken part in multicentre studies and international programmes (e.g. BIOMED, INDIGO, ITHACA, ASPEN). She is a board member of the World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation and the President of its Hellenic Branch since 2005.
She has participated as a speaker in more than 180 scientific congresses and she has more than 2.000 hours of teaching experience on an undergraduate and postgraduate level. Since 2006, she has been in charge of a two-year postgraduate training programme for mental health professionals on “Psychoeducational interventions- Behavioural Family Therapy in Psychosis”.
She has more than 60 international publications in peer-review journals, books and congress proceedings; including the Lancet, European Psychiatry, Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, World Psychiatry and Social Psychiatry & Psychiatric Epidemiology, among others. Furthermore, she has been a peer-reviewer in international scientific journals, such as BMC Psychiatry, the Lancet, Psychiatry Research and Clinical Schizophrenia & Relates Psychoses. In Greece, she has more than 100 publications in scientific journals, such as Psychiatriki, books and congress proceedings; while she has also been the editor of 18 specialized booklets and practical guides for patients and families as well as the co-editor in 3 medical books.
