OBJECTIVE:

To obtain a job in the Chemical industry

EDUCATION:
University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh PA

Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry December 2012

Thesis title: Cysteine and Spin Label Modification as a Means to Explore Protein Dynamics and Structure
Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester MA

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry May 2008

EXPERIENCE:

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA

Research Assistant II in Hackney Research Group, Feb 2013 – present

  • Expressed kinesin-1 protein mutants in E. coli. and purified using several different affinity tags for ease in chromatography and increased solubility (His-6 tag, Maltose Binding protein fusion respectively)

  • Ran ATPase assay on mutants by observing the consumption of NADH via UV-Vis spectroscopy

  • Checked protein aggregation via Gel Filtration Chromatography and subsequent Dynamic Light Scattering

  • Ran SDS-PAGE gels to assess purity of protein samples

  • Assessed protein secondary structure and stability via circular dichroism

University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA

Graduate Research Assistant in the Saxena Research Group, Mar 2011 – Dec 2012

  • Mutated with PCR, expressed in E. coli, purified using FPLC, and characterized using LCMS the B1 immunoglobulin-binding domain of protein G (GB1)

  • Used Electron Spin Resonance to analyze spin labeled GB1 structure and dynamics

  • Crystallized spin labeled GB1 (lead to publication below)

  • Devised unique research project independently

Graduate Teaching Assistant for Instrumental Analysis Lab, Aug 2010 – Dec 2012

  • Responsible for 15 undergraduates per section per semester

  • Instructed students on background information critical to understanding of instrumentation and the purpose of the lab experiment

  • Tested new experiments, assisted with implementation of new instrumentation accompanying the modernization of the lab

  • Ensured instrumentation was operational and (GCMS, FTIR, ICP-AES, HPLC, Autotitrator)

  • Supervised independent projects in which students designed their own experiments, graded PowerPoint presentations, and helped organize poster session in lieu of a final lab exam

Bayer Health Care, Bothell, WA

Analyst I, QC Raw Materials, Aug 2008 – Jul 2010

  • Performed raw material testing using compendial methods (USP/NF, ACS)

  • Incorporated laboratory results into SAP and LIMS

  • Developed GC methods using Empower software to bring method in-house and reduce dependency on contract labs

  • Revised and drafted new SOPs to reflect new changes in compendial methodology as well as new instrumentation in the lab

AWARDS RECEIVED:

  • 2011 Safford Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Chemistry

PUBLICATIONS:

  • Cunningham, T. F.; McGoff, M. S.; Sengupta, I.; Jaroniec, C. P.; Horne, W. S.; Saxena, S., High-Resolution Structure of a Protein Spin-Label in a Solvent-Exposed beta-Sheet and Comparison with DEER Spectroscopy. Biochemistry 2012, 51 (32), 6350-9

ORGANIZATIONS:

  • Treasurer, Phi Lambda Upsilon (2011-2012)

  • Member, Society of Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (2011-present)

  • Member, Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (2012-present)
