the aim of this study, which is to assess the source separation of household solid waste in the study area. Table 7 above shows that 73% of the respondents declared that they do not know what it means to separate waste from source. In each of the six (6)
LCDAs, more than 50% of the respondents who answered this question admitted that they do not know how to carryout the source separation of household solid waste. Although the LAWMA official categorically said there is a law which requires residents to carryout source separation, it appears the people do not have knowledge of such a law or probably there has been no public awareness about how to carryout the process of source separation. Ajzen’s variable of perceived behavioural control in his theory of planned behaviour was applied
in two studies conducted by Ayob & Sheau-Ting (2016) and Wan Ab,
et al (2013) to show that external factors like a public awareness campaign and the provision of adequate facilities can encourage pro-environmental behaviours. This implies probably that if the residents in the
study area have been properly 34
35 educated through the media or community engagement by the relevant authority on how to separate waste from source, and the facilities
for the separation provided, they could be willing to do it.
