MEDIA RELEASE

DATE: 18 OCTOBER 2013
THE NW’S ROUTE MAP FOR GROWTH LAUNCHED TODAY
The Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) NW launched its policy document today (Friday 18 October 2013) with Chair of the Transport Select Committee, Louise Ellman MP, at Liverpool Chamber of Commerce.
Entitled, ‘Infrastructure – The Routemap for Regional Growth’, the document sets out a list of priorities, identified by the region’s leading civil engineering contractors, with the greatest potential for delivering sustainable economic growth to the North West. CECA North West member companies have an estimated turnover of £2.2 billion and employ approximately 19,200 people in the region.
Good infrastructure is essential for the region to prosper and there is an urgent need to invest in infrastructure in the North West. For each £1 increase in infrastructure investment, UK-wide GDP increases by a total of £1.30, and every £1 of infrastructure construction increases overall economic activity by £2.84.
Better transport will improve the competitiveness of our business, while universal superfast broadband will accelerate our information economy. The South Morecambe gas field is one of the UK’s largest fields, and at peak supplies around eight per cent of the UK’s residential gas demand. At the same time upgraded waste and water networks are required to meet the demands of an increasing population.
Louise Ellman MP commented, ‘Investment in infrastructure is essential for the economy of the North West. I particularly welcome proposals to support the Atlantic Gateway, linking Mersey Gateway Bridge with John Lennon airport. This will provide a major focus for growth across the region.’
Added Chairman of CECA North West and Managing Director of Centum Construction Services, Joe Fitzgibbon, ‘Civil engineering is very much the weather vane of the economy, and our members are ideally placed to identify those measures that will a difference to the economic well-being of the North West. There is no doubt that investment in the region’s infrastructure has the potential to achieve the greatest benefits for the North West, and needs to be targeted at rail, roads, utilities, energy and waste.’
