Drama by Raina Telgemeier Drama is a really fun story. This story takes place at middle school. The main character is Callie who has to build a scene for a play but has a problem and she's really nice. A problem occurs when Callie can't make a fake cannon prop. Drama is an awesome book. If you like really funny books you will like Drama. (Cailey) Half Moon Investigations by Eoin Colfer If you like mystery story's you will like Half Moon Investigations. The story takes place in the town of Lock and it's a school where a young boy named Fletcher Moon solves mysteries at his school for a job with his badge. The problem occurs when Fletcher Moon gets a case that gets bigger and bigger. Every time he's looking for an answer, he finds trouble with the crime family the Sharkys. This book is great with a little humor and mystery in each chapter that makes you want to read more and more. (Sam R)I am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala YousafzaiIf you like adventure stories, you will like I am Malala. This story took place in Pakistan. The main character is Malala Yousafzai, who is a Novel Peace Prize winner. A problem occurs when she gets shot in the head. It a great interesting book. It takes you through her life and struggles that she has gone though. I totally recommend this book. It is definitely worth reading! (Julia) Spy School by Stuart Gibbs If you like adventure books, you will like this book. This story takes place in a spy school for training kids. The main character is Ben, who is a spy. The problem occurs when a man try's to blow up the school. This book is a great one. (Sean) I Survived the Attacks of September 11, 2001 by Lauren TarshisIf you like juvenile realistic fiction, then you will like I Survived the Attacks of September 11, 2001. The story takes place in New York City. The main character is Lucas who loves his uncle Benny more than he loves football, and he loves football. A problem occurs when the planes crashed into the World Trade Center. Lucas wants to find his family. That's when the whole world is in shock. This was a very interesting book. It is a book that grabs you and is very intriguing. (Gavin)Can You Survive Antarctica by Rachael Teresa Hanel If you like reading about books with a lot of facts, you will love this book. This is an awesome book about Antarctica. Antarctica is a dangerous place and this book tells you about adventures there. (Nolan) Wonder by R. J. Palacio If you like realistic stories, you will like this book. This story takes place in North River Heights, Manhattan, N.Y. The main character is August Pullman who has a facial deformity and has a hearing aid. A problem occurs when August and his friends get lost and find a bunch of teenagers who start being mean to him because of his face. They break his hearing aid. I recommend this book to anyone who likes realistic fiction. (Martin) I survived the destruction of Pompeii by Lauren Tarshis If you like action and adventure, you will like this story. This story takes place in Pompeii, Italy. The main characters are a boy named Marcus and his dad who are slaves. A problem occurs when Markus tries to free his dad and gets caught by the guards. He is sent to a gladiator ring while a volcano is erupting. This book is an overall amazing book. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes historical fiction. (Sam C.) Waiting for the Magic by Patricia Maclachlan If you like those types of books you can't put down? Well then Waiting for the Magic is the book for you. This story takes place in the main character’s hometown in the United States. The main character is William who after William's mother and father had a fight, his father left home. Then William, his Sister and his mother all went to the animal shelter to get a dog. William was surprised because he was never allowed to get a dog before, but his Mother did not seem to care now. They looked at all the dogs and could not make a choice! Read the story to find out what happens next. This is one of the books I highly recommend for you. (Sofia) The House on Mango Street by Sandra CisnerosIf you like realistic fiction stories, you will like The House on Mango Street. This story takes place in a neighborhood that is for Spanish immigrants. The main character is Esperanza, who is ten year old Latino girl. A problem occurs when her family moves. She is having trouble fitting into this new place. Esperanza is the first generation of her family to move to the U.S. Her family is struggling to keep their Latino culture. This story is very interesting and touching. It is a very inspiring and really shows how much the Latino culture means to Esperanza and her family. I highly recommend that you read it. (Hannah) Mr. Limoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein If you like then you will like this book. The story takes place in the modern times in the summer. The main character is Kyle Keeley who is grounded. Kyle loves to play games made from the famous game maker Mr. Lemoncello. Kyle got grounded because he wanted to win a game against his older brother he took a short cut throw a window. When Kyle finds out that Mr. Lemoncello is designing the new town library. Mango Shaped Space by Wendy Mass If you like funny, touching, realistic fiction, you will enjoy this book. The story takes place during modern times, in Illinois in a crazy looking house in the country. The main character is Mia Winchell who has synesthesia. This means she sees numbers, letters and sounds all in colors. (Only some people who have synthesis see sounds and Mia has that, but she does not taste color.) A problem occurs in third grade when she asked the class if they see numbers on the board in color. I really loved this book because I like books that touch me, and I like relating to other people. It is also really interesting what you learn about synesthesia. If you are curious about synesthesia, read Mango Shaped Space. (Lila) Ms.Nygren’s Language Class
If you like twisted fiction stories and surviving in the wild then you will enjoy White Fang by Jack London. The story takes place in the woods and in an Indian camp. The main character is White Fang who is a male wolf. The problem is he is trying to survive against his own kind. This awesome book is exciting because of the danger and fighting. I hope you will take time to read this amazing book this summer and enjoy it as much as I did! (Alex) Timmy Failure by Stephan Pastis If you like silly fiction stories and a kid who is always getting into trouble then you will enjoy Timmy Failure by Stephan Pastis. The story takes place in Timmy’s home town. The main character is Timmy Failure who always messes things up but not on purpose. The problem is Timmy is trying to win a detective contest but people keep getting in his way. This fantastic book is funny because he is always failing. I hope you will take time to read this awesome book this summer and enjoy it as much as I did! (Patrick) Alex Rider: Eagle Strike by Anthony Horowits If you like adventurous action stories and small twists along the way then you will enjoy Alex Rider: Eagle Strike by Anthony Horowits. The story takes place in Europe in the country of Spain. The main character is Alex Rider who is a 14 year old boy. The problem is that his archenemy is in Spain with him! This exciting book is so interesting because there is a lot of fighting and action. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! (Andrew) The Maze Runner by James Dashner If you like mysterious fiction and stories about young adults trying to strategize to solve a problem then you will enjoy this book for so many reasons. The story takes place in a humongous maze with teenagers that have no memory of their past and have to figure out a way out! The main character is Thomas who is a smart teen and helps the other teenagers. This is an apocalyptic book is curious because it is a magical story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! (William) Trouble Maker Andrew Clements If you like amusing, twisted and attention grabbing stories that seem like a normal story then you will enjoy all the twists in Trouble Maker by Andrew Clements. The story takes place in a school mostly and it is modern day. The main character is Clay who gets in so much trouble he has to change. This amazing book is entertaining because there are lots of twists and things you did not see coming! I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I did! (Matt) Wonder by R.J. Palacio If you like funny touching stories and an engaging boy in 5th grade then you will enjoy Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The story takes place in Beecher Prep Middle School. The main character is August Pullman a kid who has an extraordinary face. The problem is August’s face and the bully in the school. This entertaining book is deep because it teaches you about a disfigured boy’s life. I hope that you will take the time to read this book this summer and love it as much as I did! (Nate) Number the Stars by Lois Lowry If you like deep historical fiction stories that leave you thinking about your life compared to someone else’s 70 years ago then you will enjoy this moving and amazing story by Lois Lowry. The story takes place in World War II. The main character is Annemarie Johansen who has a little sister names Kristi. The problem is Annemarie has to help her Jewish friend and her family to find a safe place for them. This thought-provoking book is attention-grabbing because it is interesting to learn about history of another person. I hope you love this book as much as I did! (Belle) Bad Kitty for President by Nick Bruel If you like funny stories and funny cats you will like reading Bad Kitty for President by Nick Bruel. The story takes place in the neighborhood cat club. The main character is Bad Kitty who wants to be president for the night club. The problem is the cat gets into a lot of trouble. This silly book is funny to read. (Nick) Jack Russell Dog Detective Inspector Jaques by Darrel and Sally Odgers If you like exciting mysterious stories then you will like Jack Russell Dog Detective Inspector Jacques by Darrel and Sally Odgers. The story takes place in a city museum, school yard, and Jack’s house. The main character is Jack who is a Jack Russell Terrier who is a detective. The problem is this French dog is accusing Jack of stealing. This funny book is gripping because it is so funny and magical. You will love it! I hope you read this amusing book this summer. (Teddy) Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Long Haul by Jeff Kinney If you like attention-grabbing fantasy stories and many small conflicts, along with one large conflict, then you will enjoy reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Long Haul by Jeff Kinney. The story takes place on the road and in many various spots of the United States of America. The main character is Greg who is the complaining middle child and a friendly individual. The problem is Greg’s family is going on a long road trip. This entertaining book is brilliant because they meet so many conflicts that are hilarious! I hope you take the time to read this fascinating and enchanting book this summer and enjoy it as much as I did! (PJ) The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate If you like moving fantasy stories then you will enjoy The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. The story takes place in the zoo and also in the mall. The main character is Ivan, a gorilla, who comforts Ruby. The problem is that Ivan has been taken away from his family and home. The deep book is touching because so much that goes on. You have to read it this summer! (Iona) The Great Unexpected by Sharon Creech If you like exciting intriguing stories about kids round your age then you will enjoy The Great Unexpected by Sharon Creech. The story takes place in the spring time in their neighborhood. The main characters are Naomi, Lizzy, and Finn. Naomi is not afraid to speak her mind, Lizzy is dramatic and Finn is strange. The problem is they all have sad stories and Finn doesn’t know exactly where he is! It is an interesting story because it grabs you and it makes you feel like you are in the story so you too- lose track of time! If you like action and adventure stories and wizards then you will like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. The story takes place in England at Hogwarts. The main characters are Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger who are wizards. The problem is Voldemort tries to kill Harry Potter. This adventure book is fascinating because it is a mystery and there is tons of action. I hope you will take the time to read this incredible book this summer and love it as much as I did! (Emma) Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar If you like funny and goofy stories with crazy students and weird teachers, then you will enjoy Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar. The story takes place in The Wayside School. The main characters are The Wayside School students who are adventurous and energetic. The problem is the school has lots of problems. This twisted book is the funniest book because everyone is weird in their own way. I hope you will take the time to read this silly book this summer and love it as much as I did! (Sofie) A-Z Mysteries series by Ron Roy If you like exciting, mystery stories and kids that are detectives then you will enjoy A-Z Mysteries by Ron Roy. The story takes place in Green Law. The main characters are Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose who solve crimes. The problem is something or someone goes missing and they have to find them. This spooky book is exciting because it is a page turner. I hope you will take the time to read this mysterious book this summer and enjoy it as much as I did! (JR) Messi (World Soccer Legends) by Illugi Jokulsson If you like books that are informative and about people who beat the odds, then you will like Messi by Illugi Jokulsson. The story takes place in many locations. The book is about Lionel Messi who is a soccer player. The book tells about his life. This nonfiction book is interesting because he is awesome. I hope you will take the time to read this brilliant book this summer and love it as much as I did. (Josh) The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart If you like action-packed adventure stories and easy-to-read books then you will like the Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. The story takes place at a school. The main character is Johnson who is an orphan. The problem is the school is brainwashing children. This exciting book is magnificent because it is futuristic. I hope you take the time to read this glorious book and love it as much as I did! (Johnnie) The Fourth Stall by Chris Rylander If you like mysterious detective stories and plot twists, then you will enjoy The Fourth Stall by Chris Rylander. The story takes place in school. The main character is Mac who is a business spy. The problem is a kid named Staples who is destroying the school. This action-packed book is fun to read because you wish you were Mac. (Sean) Fourth Grade Rats by Jerry Spinelli If you like silly exciting stores and realistic books then you will enjoy Fourth Grade Rats by Jerry Spinelli. The story takes place in the boys’ school. The main character is Suds who is a silly boy. The problem is Suds is trying to be a bad boy. This hilarious book is entertaining because Suds takes baths almost every night to feel better. I hope you will take the time to read this remarkable book this summer and enjoy it as much as I did! (Mia) Rescue Princess: The Rainbow Opal by Paula Harrison If you like magical animal stories and books about saving baby animals and helping them find their family then you will enjoy Rescue Princess: The Rainbow Opal by Paula Harrison. The story takes place in the princess castle and the jungle. The main character is Princess Clarabell who loves to take care of baby animals and play with her friends. The problem is Princess Clarabell finds a baby koala outside on the ground without its family. This fantasy book is magical because they save the baby koala without using medicine. I hope you will take time to read this addictive book over the summer and enjoy it as much as I did! (Lexi) The Kid Who Ran for President by Dan Gutman If you like suspenseful action stories and kids doing crazy stuff then you will enjoy The Kid Who Ran for President by Dan Gutman. The story takes place in parts of the United States. The main character in the story is Judson Moon. The problem is that no one thinks that he will win because he is just a kid. This motivating book is intense because new problems keep popping up. I hope that you will be able to read this exciting book this summer and enjoy it as much as I did! (Mark) Hank Zipzer series by Henry Winkler If you like entertaining, life-like stories and books about a boy having learning disabilities, then you will enjoy Hank Zipzer by Henry Winkler. The story takes place in New York City. The main character is Hank Zipzer who is a boy who loves baseball. The problem is he has trouble learning in school. This realistic book is fun to read because Hank does a lot of cool stuff. I hope you will take the time to read this brilliant book this summer and love it as much as I did! (Jed) Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park If you like funny, silly stories and stories that end in a good way, then you will enjoy Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park. The story takes place in school most of the time. The main character is Junie B. Jones who is a funny student. The problem is a character named May who causes trouble for Junie B. Jones. This chapter book is interesting because it is hard to stop reading once it gets exciting. I hope you take the time to read this creative book this summer and enjoy it as much as I did! (Martin) The Philly Fake by David A. Kelly If you like action-packed, mysterious stories about baseball, then you will enjoy The Philly Fake by David A. Kelly. The story takes place in Philadelphia. The main characters are Mike and Kate who solve mysteries. The problem is someone is breaking bats. This active book is awesome because it’s about baseball. I hope you will take the time to read this awesome book this summer and love it as much as I did! (Jeremy) Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar If you like silly and strange stories and really funny and weird characters then you will enjoy this book by Louis Sachar. This story takes place in a classroom in a school. The main character is Ms. Jewls who is a teacher. The problem changes in each chapter. This hilarious book is interesting because a lot of weird stuff happens. I hope you will take the time to read this hysterical book this summer and I hope you will enjoy the book as much as I did. If you’re someone who likes adventure then you might like Gregor, the Overlander, by Suzanne Collins. The main character is Gregor. He lives in an apartment in New York and one day he finds himself in a cave under New York. There he meets all sorts of friends and enemies. He goes on a quest with people who call themselves the Underlanders. They try to help him find his dad. He meets all sorts of danger. Will he find his dad or will he die trying? There is betrayal, adventure, fighting and mystery. Can he do it? Read the book to find out. (Ben) The Maze Runner, by James Dashner If you like scary and adventurous stories you will like The Maze Runner. The Maze Runner is the first book in a series by James Dashner that takes place in the future. This story is about a kid named Thomas who figures out there are people that made him lose his memory and put him with other kids. There and all sorts of things that try to kill him and put him through all these painful and torturous things. WICKED wants him but you don't find about them until later. Here is a tiny bit about the book Maze Runner. (Annie) Sideways Stories at Wayside School, by Louis Sachar This year I read a hilarious book called Sideways Stories at Wayside School. The Carroll School has all three books. This book has crazy characters, and crazy things happen. There are funny nicknames and strange teachers. The school was built opposite of how it was supposed to be, and they have some strange lunch choices but if you like humor this is the book for you. (Charlie ) The Incredible Journey, by Sheila Burnford If you’re an animal lover like me you will like The Incredible Journey, by Sheila Burnford. The main characters are three animals: one cat and two dogs. They are staying with a friend of their owner who has gone on a business trip with his two kids. The animals want to go home. That's where the story begins... (Lola) Ellen Tebbits, by Beverly Cleary I would definitely recommend the book Ellen Tebbits ,by Beverly Cleary, to any fifth grader. It is about a girl named Ellen Tebbits. She becomes friends with a girl named Austine who is new to the school . When it seems to be going OK Ellen does something to Austine that makes Austine stop talking to her. Read this book to find out how they become friends again. (Morgan) The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer If you like fantasy, adventure, mystery and suspense, you will love The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. The main character in the first book is Cinder. It is the story of Cinderella but COMPLETELY different! It takes place in the future. It unravels slowly and keeps you at the edge of your seat! In the book, Cinder is a cyborg who works as a mechanic in Bejing! She meets the prince when he comes to her shop to get his android repaired. The second book is about a girl named Scarlet, the story of Red Riding Hood, but again SO different than the original book! The third book in the series is about a girl named Crescent, she is living the story of Rapunzel. She is a prisoner in a satellite orbiting the Earth every sixteen hours and is a computer hacker. Their enemy is Queen Levana. She is the Lunar queen. She wants to rule Earth too. The fourth book is about Queen Levana before she became evil. It is my favorite series! Marissa Meyer's new book that is coming soon is called Winter. I bet you can all guess which Disney princess she is, the one and only, Snow White! But her story is the most different than the rest, she is Queen Levana's daughter and does not want to be a Lunar so she goes crazy not using her powers, because if you don't use your powers you slowly go mad!!!! The books start off slow, but if you give them a chance, you’ll be staying up all night! (Naya) The City of Bones by Cassandra Clare A book I enjoyed this year is The City of Bones, by Cassandra Clare. If you like fantasy, drama, action and adventure, City of Bones is for you. The main characters a re Clary, Fray and Jace Wayland. One day when Clary is out with her best friend Simon, she finds out that there's a whole other world full of Shadowhunters (half human blood half angel blood), Demons, Angels, Vampires, Faeries, Werewolves, Warlocks. When Clary gets home she finds out that her mother has been taken away. Read the book to find out who took her mom and why. (Devon) Maze Runner by James Dashner. Maze Runner is a great book and movie. It has action and suspense. There are lots of mysteries and clues. If you end up liking Maze Runner you will like the books that follow: Scorch Trials, The Death Cure and the Kill Order .The main character is Thomas. The problem is that they are brought in the middle of a maze by something called the Box and they have to find a way out. This book has been one of my favorites of all time. (Max) Escape from Mr. Lemcello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein. I highly recommend Escape from Mr. Lemcello's Library by Chris Grabenstein. It is about a group of kids that get locked in a library (the library is new and has a lot of interesting features, for instance a hologram Librarian) and the one to escape first wins. I really liked this book and I hope you do too.
