MUS 211 TEST THREE STUDY GUIDE
NEAPOLITAN 6TH CHORDS
Be able to spell N6 chords in any key.

Know to which chord the N6 progresses.

Be able to illustrate, i.e., write out via four-part writing, how the N6 progresses, and which chord

factor of the N6 is doubled.

When the N6 first progresses to the tonic 6/4 chord, parallel fifths may result. Know how to

rewrite the chords in such a way so as to avoid this problem.

AUGMENTED 6TH CHORDS
Know the intervals above the root of an It6, Fr6 and Gr6 chord.

Know the relationship of the root of an Aug. 6 chord with its tonic key.

The Aug. 6 chords are spelled the same in both major and minor. Know which three major keys

have no parallel minor key, and vice versa.

Know to what chord the Aug. 6 chords ultimately resolve.

To avoid parallel fifths, the Gr6 chord typically first progresses to what intermediary chord?

Know how the two notes comprising the interval of the augmented sixth resolve.

Know which note of the It6 is doubled.

Know how to respell a Gr6 chord in major in order to improve voice leading.

The Gr6 chord sounds remarkably like what other diatonic chord?? And THAT can be most

useful when it comes to modulation.

There will be some short part-writing examples involving our friends the augmented 6th chords.
