Music in the Café 2010 Line-up
Performances are every Wednesday, May 5th – August 25th (with the exception of June 2nd) at 12pm. Music in the Café is financed in part by Cultural Sale Tax Revitalization Program and is proudly sponsored in part by VitaMN and KFAI radio.

2010 Lineup:

Wednesday, May 5th – The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra
It’s country. It’s rock. It’s jazz. It’s bug-eyed bluegrass from Zeta Reticuli. It’s swing. It’s interstellar folk music... Whatever it sounds like to earthlings, there is no mistaking the virtuoso strains and the star trekking fun of The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra (GCO)!

Wednesday, May 12th – Atlantis Quartet
Atlantis Quartet is "One of the bands to watch on the Midwestern modern jazz scene”!  They create and explore fresh and original sounds in the heart of and on the edges of the jazz idiom.
Wednesday, May 19th – The Roe Family Singers
The Roe Family Singers are a good-time, old-time, hillbilly band. What started as the husband-and-wife duo of Kim and Quillan Roe has now grown into a band that can comprise as few as 2 musicians or as many as 9! Whether it's a large group or small, you're always going to have a good time, as they play a mix of music from Bill Monroe to the Misfits, Hank Williams to Patsy Cline, and their own songs, too.
Wednesday, May 26th – Joel (from The Parlour Suite)
Joel Roberts is best known from the husband-wife fronted band The Parlour Suite. Over the past year, much of the songwriter's time has been spent recording analog demos on a TASCAM tape recorder. Intrigued by 60's swing & blues albums - his solo style carries the same gritty tape tone, which is very prevalent in band's new album "Welcome To The Garden Party" (release date April 2010).

Wednesday, June 9th – Joey Ryan (from Joey Ryan and The Inks)
Unabashed pop sweetness that brings to mind the current "twee" sound as well as the doo-wop acts of the 1950s. (JOHN BEHM, Twin Cities Daily Planet)

Wednesday, June 16thWill Hutchinson
Hailing from Lincoln, Nebraska Will Hutchinson’s soft but resonate vocals, intricate harmonies, genuine lyrics, and fluid instrumental arrangements, pulls you inside his music and leaves you feeling refreshed.
Wednesday, June 23rd – Davina and the Vagabonds
With great vocals and piano, Davina commands attention on stage and leaves everyone smiling.
"Two things remain consistent at all her shows, though: her throaty but cushiony voice, which has a sort of hard-mattress comfort to it that's part Bonnie Raitt, Etta James and a little Amy Winehouse, and her band's rollicking New Orleans flavor, driven home by dueling horn players and a bayou-thick standup bass. "(CHRIS RIEMENSCHNEIDER, Star Tribune)
Wednesday, June 30thBethany Larson
It is usually a given for artists to have some degree of passion. What else would drive them to work so hard creating, performing, and sacrificing? Bethany Larson’s passion resonates through her debut “Sticks and Stones” vigorously with a heavy heart. The opener “Why Don’t You Come Over?” sets the tone of the record as Bethany’s proposal builds slowly and comes alive as if being listened to through a lo-fi stereo.
Wednesday, July 7th – Adam Svec
Adam Svec’s style evokes the fine-tuned qualities of Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), but has a sound entirely unique.  Svec’s incredible vocal range is matched perfectly with all kinds of uncanny Lament eked out of his sparse guitar.   It truly works, and magnificently so.   His mix of testimony and tales is captivating, personal stuff." (JOSH BECKNELL, Lunch of Champions)
Wednesday, July 14thA Night in the Box
Take a banjo, a fiddle, the guitar, drums and some damn fine hats, and you've got the Minneapolis-based A Night in the Box. The image is easily described, but it is slightly more difficult to characterize their sound.
July 21st - Ashleigh Still and Nick Salisbury

Abandoning conventional group formats, the duo is made up of an unusual combination of only voice and electric bass. The minimalist approach is startlingly effective, allowing Still’s intimate and mesmerizing vocals and sexy yet tender songwriting to take center stage. Without guitar, keys, percussion or programming, the arrangements are bare and yet complete, Salisbury’s bass evoking everything from Fender Rhodes to a gentle blues guitar arrangement.

July 28th – Chastity Brown
Chastity Brown is "...a roots soul singer of the first order," as noted by music critic, Jim Walsh. With her folk-jazz style, this Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter has been steadily winning over her audiences since the release of her debut album, "Do the Best You Can." Chastity Brown has become known as a gospel-raised, activist poet who sings about race, love, and politics with an edgy tenderness. Her lyrics are both personal, infused with a deeply rooted spirituality, and politically, ethically hard hitting.

August 4th – Lauren Redpath (of Redpath)
Lauren Redpath is a member of the group Redpath, a dynamic trio of sisters from Minnesota who have been singing together since they could speak. As the oldest of the three at 25, Lauren embodies the quintessential "girl-next-door" persona. Her warmth, compassion and storytelling heart is effortlessly demonstrated in their music as she writes Redpath’s songs.

August 11th – Jennifer Grimm
Jennifer Grimm is a nationally recognized singer, songwriter and voiceover artist with her work appearing in national radio commercials, TV commercials and most recently on NBC's Parenthood. Growing up on the road, touring the USA with her family's variety showband, Jennifer has a well-crafted sound and a charismatic ease that can only come from spending 30 of her 32 years on the stage.

August 18th – ‘POPS’ Montgomery’s Senior Jazz Band of Minnesota
‘POPS’ Montgomery’s Senior Jazz Band of Minnesota is an uncompromisingly dedicated Ensemble out of the diverse communities of the Twin Cities.

August 25th – Darren Jackson (of Kid Dakota)
Like the Black Hills of songwriter Darren Jackson’s native South Dakota, Kid Dakota is a creature of extremes: Whisper-quiet vocals explode into searing guitar riffs and crushing drumbeats in a single breath. Loneliness and beauty go hand in hand. And a two-man band from Minneapolis makes a sound big enough to fill a stadium.
