AtlantiCare Behavioral Health to offer free, confidential gambling addiction screenings
AtlantiCare Behavioral Health (ABH) will offer free, confidential gambling addiction screenings at its Atlantic City location, 13 North Hartford Avenue, March 10 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and March 13, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., in observance of National Problem Gambling Awareness Week. Walk-ins are welcome.
“Gambling addiction affects all aspects of a person’s life,” said Michael Logsdon, LPC, NCC, CADC, senior director, Addiction and Employee Assistance Program Services, ABH. “More forms of gambling – many of which are remote and easily accessible – are impacting the prevalence of addiction, especially among teens and seniors.”
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) designates March 9 through 15 as National Problem Gambling Awareness Week. The goal of the sixth annual week-long designation is to heighten awareness among the public and health care professionals about the warning signs of problem gambling and the help that is available locally and nationally.
According to the NCPG, symptoms of gambling addiction include, but are not limited to:
Preoccupation with gambling that causes one to risk more than money
Gambling until one has lost his or her last dollar
Thoughts of gambling causing lost sleep
Repeated attempts to stop gambling
The NCPG says risk factors for gambling addiction include, but are not limited to:
Stressful life events, such as loss of a loved one, divorce, financial trouble
Having had an early big gambling win
Alcohol addiction
Depression
Family history of addiction
No appointment is necessary for ABH’s confidential gambling addiction screenings March 10 and 13 and walk-ins are welcome. To schedule a free, confidential appointment at another time during National Problem Gamblers Awareness Week, please call the AtlantiCare Access Center at 1-888-569-1000, or ABH at 609-646-9159.
