AB - ABSTRACT: The Apiay field was discovered in 1981 in the southwestern part of the Llanos Basin, Colombia. The main reservoirs are in Upper Cretaceous (Coniacian-Campanian) sandstones. The T1 sandstone constitutes a secondary reservoir in the field, with small reserves of gas/condensate from the lower Oligocene T1 sandstone (Carbonera Formation). A stratigraphic study, using 20 wells and 229 feet of core, was done in this reservoir to better understand the stratigraphic architecture, and allow for a better delineation and characterization of this reservoir to improve its management and future exploitation. The T1 sandstone represents the fill of a paleo-valley, primarily by marginal marine sediments deposited under brackish water conditions, as indicated by the trace fossils assemblage. A detailed lithofacies description recognizes the following deposits within the valley (bottom to top): a thin interval (10 to 20 feet) of fine-grained fluvial sandstone, which rests unconformably over black shales. This grades upward into marginal marine brackish deposits composed of fine to medium-grained sandstones which represent mainly intertidal sandbars. This change is interpreted to reflect an overall transgressive event during filling of the paleo-valley. The marginal marine sandstones are volumetrically the most important of the fill deposits. Two flow units are recognized: flow unit 1, composed by fluvial deposits, shows poor reservoir quality (porosities 17 percent, permeabilities 146 md). Flow unit 2, composed by intertidal sandbars, shows good reservoir quality (porosity 14.5 percent to 15.6 percent, permeability 309 md to 397 md). A zone of lower porosity and permeability (13 percent and 200 md respectively) was found within this flow unit.

AB - ABSTRACT: The goal of this project is to analyze the causal relationships between Cenozoic histories of subsidence and sedimentation in the basin, evolution of the flanking ranges, and mechanical properties of the crust. Work to date permits me to interpret that the Middle Magdalena region was a Paleogene broken or composite foreland basin, with multiple source areas, whose subsidence was influenced by deformation of the Eastern Cordillera much earlier than previously thought. Locations of Cenozoic depocenters were determined by the interplay between Cenozoic tectonic loading and a spatially variable flexural response that was inherited from Mesozoic extension. This study will synthesize several data sets and methods: New chronological and field information Structural and stratigraphic interpretations based on seismic and well data Uplift and burial histories derived from a combination of stratigraphic thickness and age data with thermochronological studies of detrital zircon- and apatite-fission tracks and vitrinite reflectance analyses Numerical modeling to evaluate transition from hot extensional to colder compressive regimes, and flexural variations due to spatial and temporal changes in tectonic loading and isostatic compensation. This work will facilitate hydrocarbon exploration by providing quantitative correlation tools and knowledge about the distribution of Cenozoic reservoir facies, as well as thermal, maturation, migration and trapping histories. The quantified paleogeographic history of this region will also provide clues to Andean evolution in response to plate margin interactions.

AB - ABSTRACT: In the modern exploration world of satellite communications, e-mail, computer simulations, and 3-D workstations, geoscientists are too often removed from the realities and rigors of field exploration. With the idea of documenting some of the significant international petroleum exploration accomplishments from the 1960s through the 1980s, Allen Hatley has gathered nine first-person accounts of successful international exploration adventures that are both entertaining and educational. The book begins with Dave Kingston's globe-hopping adventures with Exxon's "Rover Boys" from the early 1950s to the early 1960s. This is the most entertaining chapter, detailing numerous field exploits with African cobras, Turkish police, and monsoons in Colombia, South America. Interspersed with the stories are numerous insights and exploration principles that were developed by the roving field parties that are applicable to exploration today. One fourth of the book was Donald Todd's experiences in negotiating Indonesia's first offshore production sharing contract with IIAPCO. As more independent exploration companies move into the international arena, this chapter could be a guidebook for some of the skills needed in dealing with emerging governments, as well as pitfalls that await the unprepared venturing into unfamiliar terrains. John Masters' chapter on the discovery of the Elmworth gas field in western Canada should be read by anyone who aspires to be an effective explorationist and also by those who oversee exploration for any size organization. It is a great story of the development of the giant Elmworth gas field, from the gestation of a concept in 1975 into a field with an EUR (estimated ultimate recovery) of 16 Tcf of gas by 1995. Other chapters detail exploration in the Sudan, Philippines, Pakistan, Yemen, and the North Sea. Although the quality of some of these chapters is mixed, the stories were enjoyable and the firsthand accounts of dealings with foreign governments were insightful. I recommend the book to anyone who enjoys short stories, geoscience, and political intrigue.

AB - ABSTRACT: Oligocene-Miocene strata in the Middle Magdalena Basin, Colombia, contain deposits of fluvial channels, crevasse splay complexes, wet and dry floodplains and lakes. Studies of outcrops, cores, and well logs reveal regular, progressive changes in component facies plus their proportions from single and multiple facies tracts. Removed from their stratigraphic context, the observed facies successions of multiple facies tracts could be grouped into a few static facies succession motifs of facies models. Similarly, the variations in facies components and proportions of single facies tracts could be grouped into a few facies models of different river or floodplain types. Channel sandstones change progressively from blocky, amalgamated trough-cross stratified sandstones without fining-up caps to fully preserved point-bar successions. Trends in trough-cross stratification set thickness, grain size, porosity and oil saturation are parallel to facies changes. Crevasse splays change from disorganized heterolithic alternations of mudstones and sandstones with bioturbation and dewatering structures dominant at the top to well-organized coarsening-up and thickening-up complexes with occasional crevasse channels with dewatering and bioturbation concentrated at the base. Amalgamated channel sandstones are overlain by thin (less than or equal to 0.7 m) floodplain mudstones. Overlying lake deposits are uncommon and are replaced by a thin degradational soil horizon. Fully preserved point-bar complexes are associated with thick floodplain mudstones which generally preserve overbank clinoforms of crevasse splays. The overlying lake mudstones are succeeded by thick coarsening-up crevasse complexes. The geomorphic components of similar environments which enter the stratigraphic record change through time. We can explain these changes in terms of increasing and decreasing accommodation:sediment-supply ratios during stratigraphic cycles, From the perspective of facies models, these variations in facies components within facies succession motifs are disorganized sedimentologic noise. By contrast, these variations in facies components are regular and organized and contain considerable information from a stratigraphic perspective.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Cusiana Field (BP, Ecopetrol, Total and Triton) comprises relatively sand-rich reservoirs that range from late Cretaceous, passive margin deltaic to early Tertiary, early foreland basin estuarine-fluvial. The key reservoir is the Eocene Mirador Formation which comprises approximately 60% of reserves. Currently (October 1996) the Mirador reservoir is providing nearly all of the 180,000 bopd of production from the Cusiana Field. The Mirador reservoir comprises a stack of sandy, incised valley deposits. Valleys comprise 50% of the Mirador stratigraphy and contribute the bulk of a moderately high net:gross ratio of 60%. Reservoir pressure data prior to and after the onset of production have all indicated that valley sandstones are well connected across the Cusiana Field. However, the same pressure data and extensive production logs have also indicated, during early depletion of the Mirador, that the reservoir comprises two major compartments and the individual incised valleys behave as strongly layered systems. Both these features of the Mirador owe their origin to textural characteristics of the incised valley sandstones that are stratigraphic in nature. The two compartments in the Mirador are separated by a major transgressive surface of at least sub-regional extent. The dramatic changes in production characteristics within single Mirador valleys occur across intra-valley flooding surfaces. These stratigraphic features of the Miradot reservoir have implications to the reservoir management of the Cusiana Field. Accurate characterization of the major stratigraphic controls on production could lead to important predictions about the movements of injected gas and water leg encroachment during early field life.

AB - ABSTRACT: Biomarker analyses from oils allowed the assessment, identification and differentiation of source rock organic facies that can have important implications in the recognition of the exploration risk. The samples studied were recovered from Latin American sedimentary basins of Cretaceous and Tertiary ages. Three case histories involving exploration implications of regional variations in source rock organic facies are discussed: (i) Lower Neocomian deep, fresh to brackish water lacustrine systems (Camamu basin, Brazil), (ii) Tithonian semi-restricted shallow marine carbonate to siliciclastic systems (Southeastern basins, Mexico) and (iii) Upper Cretaceous to Tertiary marine semi-restricted to deltaic systems (Lower Magdalena Valley, Colombia). Within the tectono-sedimentary settings of these basins, both successive sea level changes and expansions and contractions of the lacustrine water body, created variations in the depositional environments, including: salinity, temperature, carbonate and siliciclastic contents. Such changes control the development of water stratification and bottom water anoxia, and hence the deposition of source rocks. These differences can be identified by their individual biomarker features directly from oil samples, without the need of actual source rock data. Even when oils or depositional environments are mixed, individual components and their relative contributions can be assessed.
