DESCRIPTION OF THE DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS POSITION:
Position Description :
This position is located in the Cooperative Forestry Unit of State and Private Forestry. The incumbent performs natural resources program coordination and liaison functions and serves as a Region-wide technical resource for forestry issues focused on outreach to limited resource and historically underserved communities and individuals.
The incumbent represents the agency on large inter-agency projects, meetings, and activities and in the public arena; plans and arranges meetings and participates in negotiations; and maintains contact and cooperates with state, federal and local agencies, NGOs, and tribal governments to partner and coordinate cooperative natural resources management projects specific to limited resource and historically underserved communities and individuals. The incumbent ensures adequate technical guidance is provided on natural resources projects and in the development of programs and plans to ensure that such activities are consistent and compatible with agency direction and mission. The incumbent maintains liaison with the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund and other public groups, including colleges and conservation organizations. Makes presentations at public conservation meetings and conducts tours of management areas for public groups as required.
Describes aspects of natural resources management. Serves as a technical resource on a broad range of activities, such as identifying opportunities for integrating development assistance principles with forestry programs; participating in the formation of policies and guidelines to further forestry activities in the region especially among limited resource and historically underserved individuals and communities; assisting to develop strategies; representing established Forest Service priorities and perspectives; and, coordinating program development, implementation, and performance monitoring plans with key partners. Participates in assessing gaps in applied research; and in interacting with various groups on forestry issues, including NGOs; federal, state, and local agencies; universities, and industrial and non-industrial private forest landowners and associations; and Congressional staff.
Assists in formulating, coordinating, and managing strategy, policies, concepts, procedures, guidelines, and models for establishing outreach programs. Analyzes constraints to development and recommends courses. Conducts program reviews and assists in the determination of baseline information. Reviews proposed activities for conceptual soundness, technical feasibility, and budget. Assists in developing issue papers and in convening and follow-up meetings so that final activity approval is expedited.
Drafts talking points, briefing memoranda, and other documents relating forestry strategy, objectives, and accomplishments in the region. Serves as a liaison with counterparts in other USDA FS Regions, to develop agency-wide policies, strategies, performance indicators, assessments, and evaluations of programs. Establishes working relationships with other agencies and organizations to inform them of USDA FS strategies in the forestry, outreach, and civil rights, and to learn of their assessments and program objectives. Represents the Agency on task forces, at conferences, and in meetings.
Assists with assessments of outreach efforts, assisting in the development of appropriate strategies, and in the development of related strategic objectives and supporting documentation. Advises the Director on the implications of assessment conclusions and on the design and implementation of ongoing and future sectoral activities. As appropriate, leads review of strategies submitted by program managers, state outreach staffs, and other objective teams working in the community.

Piedmont Park - A 180-acre haven for walkers, joggers, roller skaters, roller bladers, picnickers, tennis, and softball players. A large portion of the park includes the Atlanta Botanical Garden and its $3.5 million Fuqua Conservatory, an oasis of exotic tropical plants from around the world.
The Atlanta Ballet - performs at the Civic Center, adjacent to SciTrek, where more than 100 hands-on exhibits illustrate basic principles of science and their application of everyday life. Atlanta is becoming a Southern version of off-Broadway. Anchored by the Woodruff Arts Center, which includes the Atlanta Symphony, the Alliance and Studio Theaters, and the High Museum of Art, Midtown is the address of at least 10 other live performance theaters. One of them is the Fabulous Fox, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Fernbank Museum of Natural History - the largest natural history museum in the Southeast and houses an IMAX Theater. For astronomy lovers, the Fernbank Science Center contains a planetarium and observatory.
Chastain Memorial Park Amphitheater - Open-air concert goers dine on elaborate picnic suppers before tuning in to the Atlanta Symphony and luminaries from the world of jazz, pop and country.
Georgia's Stone Mountain Park - The world's largest mass of exposed granite, with the world's largest bas-relief sculpture carved on its side, is located here. The 200-acre park is a wonderland of outdoor recreation and family fun. Top attractions include 36 holes of championship golf, new 80-passenger skylift, spectacular summer laser light show, and the Road to Tara Museum, which has the largest permanent public exhibit of Gone with the Wind memorabilia.
Atlanta's Cyclorama and Civil War Museum located next to Zoo Atlanta; Sweet Auburn, World of Coca-Cola - the largest collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia in existence; the African-American Panoramic Experience - APEX - offers local history; the annual PGA BellSouth Classic held at Sugarloaf Country Club, a fantastic golf course designed by Greg Norman; Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site; White Water; Six Flags Over Georgia; an abundance of malls all over the city; luxurious rental houseboats on Lake Lanier - less than an hour north of Atlanta; the beautiful Callaway Gardens an hour south of Atlanta, and naturally we cannot forget the hundreds of fairs and festivals every year from the North Georgia Mountains to the east coast beaches of Jekyll and Cumberland Islands.
