The School of Medicine has an annual intake of 130 undergraduate medical students for its highly rated, innovative integrated MBChB five year course which is committed to “Graduating Excellent Clinicians”. The 2012-13 GMC QABME team reported “the Keele curriculum prepares students well for working as a foundation doctor” and “F1 supervisors we met were impressed with the can-do attitude and maturity of Keele graduates”. The Keele MBChB course is ranked 7th in the National Student Survey for Medicine 2016, is 9th in the Complete University Guide for Medicine 2017, and is 4th in the Guardian League for Medicine for 2017. Since 2012, Keele has been in the top 4 of UK medical schools by the proportion of graduates appointed to Specialist Training (ST) and Core Training (CT) posts in the UK.
The School also offers a range of programmes, modules and short courses in postgraduate medicine aimed at addressing the differing needs of healthcare professionals at different stages in their careers. Courses offered include Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters in Medical Education, Masters in Medical Science with a range of specialist routes such as Stroke, Surgery and Audit, and a range of Clinical Leadership and Management courses. The School also offers 2 successful full-time Masters courses, in Cell & Tissue Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering.

Role Summary:

To lead the scoping and development of a Physician Associate programme plan to include curriculum outline, placement plan and funding model including likely participant numbers. This includes researching existing models, visiting other Universities, meetings with Health Education England, visits to healthcare partners and, should the School decide to go ahead with the programme, the production of a business case to submit for University approval.




Main Duties and Responsibilities:

With respect to the development of a Physician Associate programme:



  • Develop a curriculum built on current national guidance and cognisant of the local academic and placement strengths of Keele School of Medicine. To include

    • Intended Learning outcomes

    • Clinical and communication skills teaching

    • Professional practice

    • Assessment

    • Teaching & Learning approach (including synergies with current programmes)

    • Student support




  • With healthcare partners, to develop a programme of clinical placements, which is likely to involve visits to relevant NHS staff to inform them about the programme requirements, possibly giving presentations, information seeking, negotiating placements.

  • Develop a robust approach to student selection to the programme, which is likely to involve information gathering (including face to face visits) about how this works best at other universities, discussion with Health Education England, and working in liaison with relevant Keele staff to decide about how Keele will select from the pool of applicants.

  • Develop a business case (in liaison with other School members) for submission to Keele for formal approval to run the programme.

FURTHER PARTICULARS

The School is interested in developing a 2-year Physician Associate graduate entry programme. The success of such a programme is contingent on successful engagement of stakeholders, notably local healthcare providers, Health Education England (Midlands and East) and also members of all four schools in the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences at Keele.


This post is available either as a substantive contract or a secondment arrangement, by negotiation with the appointee.
If, at the end of the 6-month period, the School decides to go ahead with the programme (for an intake in 2018), the appointment of a Course Lead would be required. There would be a discussion with the Project Lead at the appropriate time.
