and the Association of European Businesses in Russia The leading national automotive event of the year in Russia was held August 24 – September 4, 2016 in Crocus Expo IEC! The event runs every other year on even years in accordance with the exhibition calendar of the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles (OICA). The Moscow International Automobile Salon (MIAS) demonstrated to the wide audience of specialists and motor enthusiasts the novelties and tendencies of the global automotive industry.

Autosalon is not only a global review of the best novelties, but the demonstration of the latest trends in the industry, benchmarks towards which aim all world brands. The army of car fans is increasing in Russia attracting more and more people into fascinating automotive world. Common motorists were attracted to the show aiming to discover and explore new cars, to compare competitors on the same platform and to plan a purchase. And also to admire impressive supercars, concepts and, as always, the most beautiful girls of the motor show.
The leader of the national automotive industry – AVTOVAZ – produced quite an impression not only by the largest in its history stand (19 cars on 2 000 sq m of exhibit space) but by a number of concept cars. LADA designer Steve Mattin noted that designers worked hard on the development of new models aiming to present to public new results. Six concept cars were displayed at the Moscow Autosalon: LADA X-Сode Concept – a car that is designed to demonstrate the possible development of a lineup LADA and show a new design concept, currently produced X-Ray and Vesta cars, new concepts of cross-version Vesta and X-Ray cars, as well as the version of LADA Vesta SW Cross Concept – the off-road version of the station wagon and sport-versions of Vesta and X-Ray models.
One of the most important events of the year for Mercedes-Benz was the 130th anniversary of the car created by Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler. In honour of the event Mercedes-Benz, a participant of the Moscow International Automobile Salon 2016, invited all owners of Mercedes-Benz cars to their stand which was accommodated in their hall! The producer brought many cars to the Autosalon. The list of cars included G500 4x4, GLC 250 Coupe, SLC 43, E 43, GLC 43, S 63 Cabrio and C 43 Cabrio, sport Mercedes-AMG and magnificent Mercedes-Maybach. Many of the cars were available for test drives. Premiere of new Mercedes-Benz GLC 250 4MATIC Coupe and Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 was held within the frames of Stars & Cars event with participation of famous brand fans: Polina Gagarina, Vitaly Petrov, Evgeny Plushenko, Valery Meladze, Vera Brezhneva and Dima Bilan.
Hyundai Korean company displayed their main novelty – SUV-B Hyundai Creta crossover in all various packagings. It is the second model of the brand assembled at the Russian plant in St. Petersburg. Representatives of the company noted that they had got about 3000 orders for the car already.
Changan Automobile Company Limited at the Moscow International Automobile Salon introduced the first compact crossover CS35, assembled at the production facilities in Lipetsk Region. Changan plant, which is located in the Lipetsk region, will work on the principle of SKD. At present, the company assembles only compact crossovers CS35, but eventually the company plans to expand the model range. During the MIAS 2016 Changan also introduced two sedans: Raeton, business-class sedan and the car Alsvin V7 that had never been exhibited in Russia. As noted in Changan, by 2020 the company plans to expand presented in Russia model range and to increase its share in the Russian market up to 5%.
Volvo presented a new 2017 family at the Moscow International Automobile Salon. The main premiere from Volvo became Volvo S90 premium class sedan. The car was for the first time unveiled for the general Russian audience at OBUKHOV GK stand. The S90 marks a giant step forward for Volvo Cars. The Swedish car maker is better known for its SUVs and estates, but with the launch of the S90 Volvo is clearly intent on shaking up the premium sedan segment with its distinctive executive class sedan. Equipped with a host of new technologies ranging from cutting edge safety to cloud-based apps and services, the S90 is further proof of the Swedish brand’s continuing transformation. A new version of Volvo V40 Cross Country was also displayed at the motor show. The list of new cars included S60 sedan, S60 Cross Country off-road sedan, sports V60 Cross Country wagon, compact XC60 crossover, luxury XC90 SUV and Volvo V40 Cross Country compact hatchback.
Chinese brands do not lose ambitions and wait for a successful moment to expand in Russia. For example, Geely told about changes in the cars produced in cooperation with Volvo specialists and presented five models including Geely Emgrand GT (GC 9) representative sedan— the first car of the brand created by the international team of designers under Peter Horberi leadership. Also the company brought the first 4WD NL-3 crossover equipped with the interactive multimedia Apple CarPlay system, compact Geely Emgrand Cross crossover, Geely GL (FE-5) conceptual sedan and new generation of the Emgrand X7 crossover.
China's Dongfeng Motor Corp. unveiled a number of its novelties including its new flagship A9 sedan at the Moscow International Automobile Salon. The A9 uses a platform from joint venture partner PSA/Peugeot-Citroen. The model was developed on the platform of the Citroen C5. It is a 5-meter long premium class sedan. A very nice interior with shiploads of woods and leather. The corporation also displayed Rich New pickup, minivan DFM 370, DFM A9 business sedan, a medium size crossover and В and С class sedans!
TOPCAR stand presented a long awaited premiere of their special project for Porsche 991 Turbo/S – Stinger GTR gen.2. Besides they showcased the two bestsellers of 2016: Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe INFERNO and Mercedes-Benz GLE Wagon INFERNO. TOPCAR has been in tuning premium segment since 2004. It is a world famed company successfully competing in the global market. Their products are exhibited at the largest motor shows worldwide: Essen Motor Show (Germany), Top Marques (Monaco), Geneva International Motor show.
Bike Land company, the official distributor of the Austrian brand KTM, whose motorcycles have been for decades conquering the world Championships in motocross, for the first time exhibited at the show. They presented the latest models for enduro races ofEXC series and cross motorbikes of SX 2016 series.
Kawasaki stand showcased a variety of motor bikes including Ninja H2 sport motor bike and powerful Versys1000. The exposition attracted many motor bike fans and just project guests.
Presentation of the SHUTTLE project, exclusive concept of urban transportation system with unmanned (driverless) buses, took place at the Moscow International Automobile Salon 2016. The transport vehicle has been developed and designed in the scientific and research centre NAMI Russian Federation Federal State Unitary Enterprise. The key partners of the SHUTTLE project are KAMAZ and Yandex.
RTR Show of Masters, integral and essential part of large scale automotive events in Crocus Expo IEC, was held within the frames of the Moscow Autosalon. Among the participants of the show were KAMAZ MASTER team, Autorodeo LADA, LEGENDS RUSSIA SERIES and others. The outdoor area opposite from Crocus Expo Pavilion 3 was filled with motors roaring, tires squeal and exclamations of the audience striving to cheer up professional athletes performing spectacular drifting rides on rear-wheel sports cars, stunt riding on sport motorbikes on forward and back wheels, jumps and many other things.
Porsche Driving Center Russiaarranged a special obstacles course for test drives. Attendees had an opportunity to improve sports cars driving skills and to get useful tips from experienced instructors on art of safe and polite driving.
Fans of motor sport appreciated LADA Vesta TC1, the vehicle of LADA SPORT ROSNEFT pilot Gabriele Tarquini who had participated in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC).
A number of photo and autograph sessions were organized with the stars of the world and national sport: Alexei Nemov, Evgeny Plushenko, Vitaly Petrov, Gabriele Tarquini, football players Lorenzo Melgarejo and Fernando, hockey players Konstantin Glazachev and Nikita Bespalov.
The second Friday of MIAS, September 2, 2016, was declared the Education Day aiming to assist professional orientation of young generation. The event was supported by the Association of Russian Automakers NP and the leading higher education institutions of the country. The Educational Day of the Moscow International Automobile Salon is the major event of professional orientation for the automotive industry. Companies of the automotive market, profile educational organizations of various levels and representatives of younger generation willing to obtain good promotion in automotive business met this day on the same platform. Participation in the event provided an opportunity to young people to gain a reliable insight about opportunities of professional development in the automotive industry and to producers to lay the foundation of the personnel reserve for the industry. Mercedes Benz RUS, Mitsubishi Motors RUS, Hyundai Motor CIS, BMW Group Russia, Renault Russia, NAMI Russian Federation Federal State Unitary Enterprise, Kia Motors RUS and AVTOVAZ JSC supported this socially important idea.
About 500 000 visitors came to the motor show during 12 days! Moscow International Automobile Salon 2016 was a complete business success and many car makers will return here and will continue to place Russia high on the list of targeted territories. Despite the changes taking place in Russia and in the automotive sector, the show continues to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!
