| "DOHERTY'S DANDY DOZEN" ROCKLAND COUNTY Winter 2010-11--Poll #8 Includes reported games up to an including Wednesday, February 16th (The number in parenthesis indicates Poll #7 Ranking, N.R. = Not Ranked) POST-SEASON RANKING GUIDELINES:
As we enter the Post-Season, I will evaluate teams on the following criteria in order: 1.) New York Federation Results--post-season play against the best in New York from the public, private, and independent schools 2.) NYSPHSAA Championship Results--post-season play against the best in New York by school size 3.) NYSPHSAA Regional Results--post-season play beyond Section One Championships 4.) Section One Championship Results--post-season play in the Sectionals (Note: See comments below in "Last Words of the Week." ) 5.) Rockland County Championship Tournament Results--competition for County Titles. 6.) League Championship Results--including regular season games and post-season league tourneys 1.) North Rockland Girls Bowling, Coach Joan Nelson--Record: 147-0 (#2) Takes over #1 spot in Dandy Dozen as they extend their SECTIONAL Championship streak to 7 in row! 2.) Suffern Boys Ice Hockey, Coach Rob Schelling--Record: 17-2-1 (#1) NYSSWA Weekly Poll--#3 in STATE Division I Drops a notch after upset loss to White Plains (3-2), but still holds #1 seed in SECTION Division I. 3.)Tappan Zee Boys Swimming, Coach Dan Rafferty--Record 7-1 (#3) The Dutchies sweep the Triple Crown--League, County & SECTIONAL Championships! 4.) North Rock Boys Track, Coach Gene Dall--No Dual Record in Winter (#3) League & County Champions, can NR match TZ Swimming with a SECTION A Title on Monday? 5.) Clarkstown Boys Bowling, Coach Jeff Gartner--Record: 124-23 (N.R.) Revenge is sweet! Lost League Title by 1 point, but beat NR (Defending State Champs) for SECTIONALS! 6.) Albertus Magnus Girls Basketball, Coach Pat Buckley--Record: 17-1 (#8) NYSSWA/NYSSCOGS Weekly Poll--#9 in STATE Class A Poll Co-League & County Champions! At home tomorrow night as #3 Seed in SECTION A Tourney! 7.) Pearl River Girls Basketball, Coach Lorraine Moylan-- Record 17-1 (#7) NYSSWA/NYSSCOGS Weekly Poll--#7 in STATE Class A Poll & MSG VARSITY Tri-State Poll-#19 Co-League Champions with AM! Suffern Girls Track, Coach Joe Biddy--No Dual Record in Winter (#6) County Champions, can they defend their SECTION A Title on Monday? 11.) Congrats to the 2011 Inductees into the upcoming Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame: Jeff Becker--North Rockland Danny Keeley--North Rockland & RCC Gene Martin--Tappan Zee Kristen Conklin-Sullivan--Suffern Shulton Whitley--Nyack Old Timers Special Award Wilbur "Web" Wanamaker--Nyack (Posthumously) Induction Dinner will be held at the Pearl River Elks Club on Saturday night, April 30th! Much more info on tickets, ads, etc. to follow! 2.) Speaking of Halls of Fame, Congrats to Mike Sparago, Suffern HS, Class of 1982, who will be inducted into the New York State High School Hockey Hall of Fame on March 12th! Mike is the first downstate player to receive this prestigious award. The ceremony will take place at the New York State High School Hockey Championships Final Four at the AUD in Utica. Mike was a Division 1 scholarship player at Ferris State University in Michigan. He played professionally in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. He is also a member of both the Suffern HS & Rockland County Sports Halls of Fame! TD ROCKLAND COUNTY ANNOUCEMENTS: As we did with the 2010 Fall Sports Teams, I volunteered to coordinate the Rockland All-County Selections with the Journal News for our Winter Sports Teams. I need a "contact person" for each of our Sports: BOYS: Basketball, Track, Wrestling, Bowling, Ice Hockey, Swimming & Skiing GIRLS: Basketball, Track, Bowling, Gymnastics & Skiing With your help we can make sure that each of our sports is represented with First Team, Second Team & Honorable Mention Selections. Plus the two special awards--Player-of-the-Year and Coach-of-the Year. Please let me know if you will help! TD LAST WORDS OF THE WEEK: The greatest challenge of ranking teams during the Post-Season is with Sectional Play! There are so many variables: 1.) Some sports only have one Team Championship--Bowling, Gymnastics, Swimming, & Skiing 2.) Some sports have two Team Championships--Ice Hockey & Wrestling (Divisions I & II) 3.) One Sport has three Team Championships--Track (A-B-C) 4.) One Sport has five Team Championships--Basketball (AA-A-B-C-D) It is a judgment call on my part to decide if a Championship in Division II is a greater feat than a Third Place in Division I. Enjoy the Ride! The next few weeks is the best part of the season, as we look for Rockland teams & individual athletes to advance in Section, Regional, State, & Federation Play!!
