June 23, 2015, Fort Lauderdale – The Museum of Discovery and Science has partnered with Florida Atlantic University for the third year in a row to create a marine biology/engineering Ocean Explorers summer camp for incoming seventh and eighth grade students. This five-day camp is offered three separate weeks this summer with program support generously provided by the Jerry Taylor & Nancy Bryant Foundation.
Campers will spend two days at the Museum of Discovery and Science and three days at FAU’s SeaTech in Dania Beach exploring coastal marine and coral reef ecosystems. They will conduct estuary and barrier island fieldwork and tour FAU’s ocean engineering and electronics labs, submarine, and flow tunnel. Plus, learn about sea turtles, marine science careers, and design, build, and race a solar-powered boat.
Museum president and CEO Kim Cavendish said, “This marine science camp was piloted as a one week camp in 2013 as one of the Museum’s STEM Center’s initiatives to target middle school students interested in marine biology or engineering. Due to its success and increased demand, we increased the program to three weeks last year and will continue with three this year.”
Ocean Explorer Camps occurs on three separate weeks: June 22-26, July 20-24 or August 10-14, 2015. The fee of $300 includes all camp workshop materials. Space is limited. Call 954.713.0930 for reservations. Campers should also bring two snacks, lunch, and a drink. Participants will be responsible for transportation arrangement to both the Museum of Discovery and Science and FAU’s SeaTech in Dania Beach.
ABOUT THE JERRY TAYLOR & NANCY BRYANT FOUNDATION

When Nancy Bryant and husband Jerry Taylor created their Fund at the Community Foundation, they wanted to gain a deeper understanding of local issues and invest in innovative solutions. Quickly sensing their conviction that children be given opportunities to succeed, their philanthropic advisors introduced them to work being done for foster youth who, taken from their families for their own protection as children, are released from the state’s care at the young age of 18. Nancy and Jerry were honored to take the lead in the recent Foster Success Challenge increase awareness and support for a cause that is important to them and to our community. “When we first learned about the plight of foster kids who must leave the state’s care, we cringed at how hopeless and alone they must feel,” said Byrant. “Working with the Community Foundation of Broward, we have now found innovative and constructive ways to help these youth overcome their misfortunes to carve a better path for their lives.” As a result of working together with our staff and community of philanthropists, the Jerry Taylor and Nancy Bryant Fund will change young lives …For Good. For Ever. More information: http://bit.ly/1KtOSSl
