VISIT: Subject Knowledge Development

CENTRE FOR LIFE


This visit will give you a chance to see and hear what the Centre For Life offers to primary schools and to take part in one of the shows in their Planetarium. Staff at the centre will talk through the purpose and scope for learning in and around the centre, but do come armed with questions about how best to manage bringing a group of pupils to a venue like this – what are the rules limitations and expectations etc.?

SELF-STUDY SESSION 4: Subject Pedagogy

PLANNING SCIENCE LESSONS


Planning lessons is more than just planning a single hour’s worth of science fun, we need to think about how we develop understanding over a period of time and ensure that the sequencing of learning helps this.

Read the sections about the Effective Planning Of Science on pages 216-223 in the course text “Meeting The Standards In Primary Science” by Lynn Newton (also available as an e-reader from the University library: http://NCL.eblib.com/patron/FullRecord.aspx?p=168523 ) and complete the following task:

Looking back at your 5-minute lesson plan, answer the following questions:


  1. What additional information would you now include? :

  2. For one of the activities mentioned in your plan, describe the activity to include notes on:

  • Timing (date, day, time, approximate length of this section of the lesson/activity)

  • Pace – what do you expect the pupils to actually do in this time?

  • How will the pupils be organised?

  • How will the room be organised?

  • What will the teacher be doing?

  • What resources will you need?

  • How does the activity address the National Curriculum Programmes of Study?

  • What are the main objectives of this activity? Are these in pupil friendly language? Do THEY know what is expected?

  • What might you do to differentiate for less and more able pupils?

  • How will you measure success and progress made?
























































































































































































Workshop: Subject Knowledge Development

LIGHT


This session explores the nature and properties of light and sight. Sources of light will be distinguished from reflectors of light and some everyday effects and properties of light will be examined. Subject and pedagogical knowledge will be developed through a variety of practical activities and consider “Working Scientifically”. Some common misconceptions about light and sight will be addressed.
