In some instances Australian prisoners in foreign prisons may be able to arrange a loan from the Australian Government under the Prisoner Loan Scheme. However, a loan will only be arranged if




  • adequate food and medical facilities and other essentials (such as bedding, cooking utensils, clothing, soap, etc) are not provided by the prison

  • a loan is unable to be organised from family or friends

  • the country where the individual is imprisoned is on the approved country schedule.

Loans granted under the Prisoner Loan Scheme must be repaid after the person’s release.


To enable the Australian Government to determine if (insert name) is eligible for a prisoner loan we first need to determine if the next of kin are able to assist financially. To assist with this assessment, we would appreciate if you would complete the attached Estimate of Monthly Income and Expenditure form and return it to:

Written notification of the result of your request for a prisoner loan will be forwarded to you once a determination has been finalised.
