Language = Structured System of Meaning
Natural languages: spoken word
Artificial languages: ex. computer/coding languages
Consists of two theses:
Linguistic determinism: Language determines thought
Linguistic relativity: People from different communities perceive the world differently
Some concepts are easier to explain in certain languages
Signified (the private idea located in the mind of the communicator), sign ( the way to express those ideas)
Dialects, taboos
Jargons influence thought (ex. nuclear jargon)
Neologism: help to express new things
Reappropriation: reappropriating words is giving new image/ meaning to words/ expressions (for ex. Obamacare, the n-word, queer)
