Project Management
Stuart has led many large, multi-disciplinary and multi-geo teams for FTSE100 clients on major change programmes ($10M - $50M and more) covering: ERP (SAP, GOLD, Oracle / Retek), CRM (Siebel, Salesforce), WMS (Manhattan), and MRO (Maximo) implementations; full system and software development life cycles (SLDC – package customisation, new builds, integration); and major infrastructure implementations (development, test, production) often using cloud/virtualisation (VMWare, AIX) approaches. He was Cloud Programme Lead for IBM GBS UK & Ireland for 2012 H2. He also acted as an SME on managing infrastructure implementations throughout his time with IBM. Stuart has often acted as a trouble-shooter - taking over troubled projects in many cases (which provided material for courses he taught on how to recognise and avoid problems in the first place). Clients include RBS, Nationwide, DVLA, DWP, and Marks & Spencer.

Management Consulting
Stuart worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers and IBM Global Business Services for six years as an IT Management Consultant, working in particular on IT Strategy development/planning, and on the IT component of Mergers and Acquisition programmes. He was global lead in 2007 for the IT Strategy Mergers & Acquisition team’s approaches, methodologies and toolkits. He helped a wide range of leading clients in many industries (including retail, engineering, CPG, pharmaceutical, insurance, financial services) on: business-based IT strategies (often including important architectural guidance); IT cost reductions and reorganisations (improved structure and performance); outsource and package (ERP, CRM) selection processes (including software development options, and open source software offerings); and on coaching of IT leaders. Clients include Cooperative Retail, Royal Mail, Hewden Stuart, Norwich Union (Aviva), Astellas, AstraZeneca, Group 4 Securicor, Ministry of Transport (Egypt), and Clarks.
IT Management
Stuart held a senior role in Kingfisher PLC in the development and implementation (UK and internationally) of their ecommerce business propositions and solutions. He was CTO for B&Q online at launch as well as Head of Systems for ecommerce brands including Comet, Screwfix, Woolworths, and MVC). Stuart has held profit and loss accountability, run IT departments, worked internationally using landed and offshore teams, and managed major change programmes with resources working remotely in many locations. He was responsible for highly critical business systems in one of the UK’s largest retail distribution operations (Entertainment UK) and for successfully introducing the latest open source, package platforms, systems and business approaches for ecommerce. Prior to that, he was Director of Information Services Division in Mott MacDonald Group, a major international engineering consultancy, completing thirteen years of IT Management experience in the engineering world (engineering consultancy, heavy manufacturing, precision engineering).

Overview of pre-consulting roles
As CTO B&Q Direct & Head of Systems e-Kingfisher, Stuart developed, with a core business team, propositions for online retailing for a group of major UK retail brands, and then led solution development and launch of high volume transactional web sites for the best of those propositions. He led integration of many systems between several major UK retail brands, and introduced new network technology and thinking. Stuart educated business leaders on online opportunities and risks and worked on mergers and acquisitions of other online brands.
As Group IS Manager, Entertainment UK Ltd (part of Kingfisher plc), Stuart managed the IS services organisation and developed systems for one of the UK's largest retail distributors (around 30% of the UK market for CDs, DVDs, Videos, consoles & games). He introduced intranet based services incorporating legacy applications and new applications in new cross functional business processes. Stuart also introduced a Data Warehouse that provided new information assets saleable in their own right. He migrated an office infrastructure from AS400 and OS/2 to Unix and Windows NT; designed technical infrastructure for a new automated distribution centre (one of the largest and highest volume in the UK).
As Divisional Director, Information Service Division, Mott MacDonald Group Ltd, Stuart provided IT services to clients of engineering projects throughout the world including IT procurement, organisation, sourcing, infrastructure and application design and implementation for oil, transport and utility companies. He transformed the delivery of internal IT services to over 4,500 technical staff; led development of software for both external clients, to support projects, and for internal business and infrastructure use; implemented a new project accounting financial system and many major engineering packages. He was instrumental in early adoption of internet technologies, providing commercial advantage to the company in proposition development and delivery and introduced company wide network based incoming and outgoing fax services (integrated to the email system, Wordperfect and scanning stations) well before such products were commercially available.
As Manager, Engineering Computer Services, Butterley Engineering Ltd, Stuart provided day to day management and support of IT systems, including mini-computer and PC systems. He introduced a major CADCAM system (and provided one-to-one training to engineers), built a small software team and developed engineering software (to exacting QA standards) to significantly reduce time engineers spent on projects, and a number of office systems (e.g. material control, inventory, finance, hr).

Role: Project Manager for Enterprise Data Warehouse. Project Description: Design, build and operate an enterprise wide international data warehouse for mobile and fixed line telephone services and products in multiple countries throughout Europe to replace existing discrete unaligned and very different solutions used in each country / operating company. Contribution: Took over very troubled project that had been renegotiated several times and had had six previous project managers. International team, around 100 staff, including ETL developers in three Indian cities. Tasked alongside senior IBM Executive to bring about significant change to delivery of project and to agree satisfactory position for both parties. Achieved settlement and handover. Demonstrated strong commercial and technical leadership, changed resources where required, resolved major delivery problems, and got work back on track providing a solid basis for negotiations. Also, taught courses in Sweden and UK on Delivery Excellence.

Role: Infrastructure Portfolio (Deputy Manager). Project Description: Design, build, test and implementation of a very wide range of new application and technology components and updates to existing assets in the client estate. Multiple technical improvement projects and Technical Refresh updates to the estate. Included use of, and integration with, major bespoke, specialist package and ERP offerings using modern security standards, strong interface architecture management, and both open source and proprietary products. Contribution: Lead of multiple project teams handling significant and service critical updates, expansions and replacements of key parts of the infrastructure and many significant applications that have a high degree of infrastructure complexity. Role: Project Manager of TVR (Technical Vulnerability Reduction). Project Description: Major changes to the technical estate to significantly improve isolation, separation and security of all services through the use of a zoned environment and various protective devices. Largest network infrastructure build ever implemented for this client. Development of new application architectural patterns for future implementation in new zoned environment. Development of new techniques for analysis of compliance of existing applications to new architectural security standards and determination of amount and nature of intervention required to bring them into compliance. Contribution: Lead IBM Project Manager for TVR. Took over troubled project to provide more technical leadership, greater drive, and better stakeholder engagement. Covered all streams of work including development of new application architectural patterns compliant with open standards and supporting platform independence, reviews of application compliance, design, build, test and deployment of infrastructure changes working across the organisation with key stakeholders, other project PMs, and delivery partners. Workstream lead of work relating to development of applications providing the environment for the programme overall including store portal (business information systems), workflow, application migration and hht (hand-held terminal) services and integration with core ERP systems using industry standard open protocols. Responsible for design and build of new Vista based desktop including virtualisation technology to run old applications. Responsible for development and build of a new Windows Mobile based hht services layer to support rich application functionality similar to that available on a desktop. Used for new centralised stock management system being development as part of programme. Project Description: Business Systems Sourcing Review (2,500 IS service group delivering full range of IT services, including infrastructure, desktop, applications development and support). The project included: tendering process for the outsourcing of the majority of business systems; selection and negotiation processes; preparation for outsourcing; creation of retained organisation to manager provider and track benefits. Contribution: Led Business Change Stream on product definitions and service level agreements comprising 6 full time Client staff and over 75 part time client staff; created descriptions and SLA's for all nearly 1000 products and services; collated performance statistics in Data Room; prepared transition plans; supported Sourcing stream during scoring of PQQ and RFP responses, reference site visits and contract negotiations.
