First, test the microphone to make sure the sound level is adequate. Get the line-ups from both coaches as soon as you can before each game (usually 15-20 minutes), so you have time to make the lineup announcements well before the first pitch. While you are with the coaches, clarify with them the pronunciations of any names you may have difficulty with.

During the game, announce who is coming to the plate and any lineup changes.
EXAMPLES…
NEW BATTER: Now batting, the second baseman, number 12, Ryan Smith.
NEW BATTER LEADING OFF INNING: Leading off the bottom of the fourth for the Boxers, the second baseman, number 12, Ryan Smith.
NEW PLAYER AT THE PLATE: Your attention please…Entering the game for Pacific and now batting, number 12, Ryan Smith.
DEFENSIVE SUBSTITUTION: Your attention please…defensive change for the Boxers. Now playing at second base for Pacific, number 12, Ryan Smith.
PITCHING SUBSTITUTION (after previous pitcher has left the field): Your attention please…now pitching for Pacific, number 12, Ryan Smith.
AT THE END OF AN INNING: Your score after __________ innings, (read score with winning team first).
TIPS: DO NOT DO ANY play-by-play announcing. The scoreboard and the umpire will give the fans and teams the most important information. The PA announcer fills in what is not already supplied or obvious. If there is a question in your mind of whether to announce something or not, it is best to not make an announcement. Some fans feel PA announcers talk too much, but rarely do fans complain that the PA announcers don’t talk enough. Talk slower into the microphone than you normally do so you can be easily understood. If possible, play music between innings. Fade it in and out, but make sure the music is not playing during the action. At the end of an inning break, fade the music out, then announce the first batter. PLEASE, NO CHEERING IN THE PRESS BOX! This is a non-biased work area. If there is anyone else in the Press Box, keep your conversations to a minimum, because it is easy to get distracted and miss announcements.
