| Caring Science and Unitary Principles Watson’s theory of transpersonal caring is guided by unitary philosophical-ethical principles of unitary of all healing is transformative through evolving transcendent consciousness. Indeed, CS is based on the ethics of belonging and the ethics of face, from Emmanuel Levinas, the French philosopher who posited the ethic of belonging as the first principle of science (Levinas, 1969; Watson, 2005). The ethic of belonging is consistent with the unitary paradigm that humans all belong to the infinite field of the universe (Levinas, 1969) and are connected and belong to one whole. In his philosophy of ethics of face, Levinas noted the face of other we encounter is irreducible and without bounds, whereby one person’s level of humanity reflects on the other—we are all connected Watson, 2005). Opening to existential-spiritual, mystery, unknowns— allowing for miracles. 256 Nursing Science Quarterly 31(3) Watson’s CS, drawing upon Levinas, posits that the field of nursing as residing within the infinite sacred circle of life- death—all connected with and belonging to the universal, infinite Source (Watson, 2005, 2008). The notion of Source is close to what Phillips (2017) refers to as an “Energyspirit— the indivisible and invisible soul of the universe (Phillips, 2017, p. 223). According to Levinas’ (1969) work Infinity Versus Totality, humanity will either evolve to a higher level of consciousness or humans will objectify, totalize, and destroy humanity. Transpersonal caring theory posits a caring moment as transcending time, space, and physicality, connecting with the infinite field of possibilities (Watson, 1999). Transpersonal caring consciousness affirms an evolution of human consciousness. This consciousness leads to the ability to affirm ethically and morally that humans all belong to the infinite field of universal love energy. This is the great mystery and sacred nature of human beings in the physical world yet connected with infinity-universal field of oneness of all (Phillips, 2017; Rogers, 1992; Watson, 1999, 2005).
