ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

NOVEMBER 16, 2016, 7-9 pm

RAIL TRANSPORTATION IN AND THROUGH CRYSTAL CITY

WHAT? Have you heard about the federal grant of $165 million Virginia has received for its Atlantic Gateway program?

The rail part of Atlantic Gateway will include initial steps to rebuild the Long Bridge, the span that takes rail traffic across the Potomac River, as well as the widening of track segments in Northern Virginia. The Virginia Department of Transportation is planning high-speed trains; CSX owns the tracks and wants to expand train traffic on the bridge and in Crystal City; and VRE wants to expand VRE service at night and on weekends once tracks are increased. Included in planning is upgrading of the VRE train station in Crystal City to accommodate more trains. While great for transportation in Northern Virginia, there are considerable environmental and quality of life implications for the proposed increase in tracks and traffic crossing the Long Bridge.

Although this future planning depends in large extent on long-term decisions concerning the Long Bridge Project, you will DEFINITELY want to hear this panel to understand the context in the early stages and raise concerns and questions.
