Dear parents and students,

Welcome to College View Middle School! I hope the year has started off well for everyone. I’m sending this independent reading program letter home for you to review with your child. Please sign, date, and return after reading over with your child.

Reading Goals

This year the students’ reading goals will not come in the form of accelerated reader points. Instead, students will be required to read five (5) books each nine weeks. (Unfortunately, as wonderful as picture books are, those will not count). To be fair, if a student reads a large book (over 300 pages), I will count it as two books. Furthermore, if it is over 500 pages, I will count it as three. A student’s “reading goal” grade will be based on a reading and testing on five Accelerated Reader books (per 9 weeks). For example, for each book a student reads and passes with a score of 70% or higher, they will earn 20% of their reading goal grade. Thus, if they read and pass 5 A.R. tests, they will earn 100% of their reading goal grade. If a student decides to test on more than five books per nine weeks, it will not count as extra credit.

A student will be able to earn extra credit by reading all five books in various genres (fantasy, science fiction, realistic fiction, autobiography/biography, nonfiction, etc...).

Students’ Independent Reading Grades

There will be 3 main independent reading grades:

  1. Reading Goal Grade (20% earned for each book read and tested on. The student must earn an AR test score of 70% or higher for the book to count. The requirement is five books.)

  2. Comprehension Grade (An average of the A.R. test scores earned)

  3. Possible AR Journal/Projects. More information on this will be forthcoming!

Final Note

Please don’t hesitate to contact me at any time to discuss questions and/or concerns that may arise. I’m here to help your child succeed.

I’m looking forward to a great year!
