Tough Acts

by Steven Berkoff

Read by Hilary Michel (1 Cd)

Berkoff writes in fascinating detail about many of the legendary directors and actors he has worked with, including Stanley Kubrick, Mikhall Baryshnikov, Christopher Walken, Sylvester Stallone, Leonard Rossiter, Roman Polanski, Eddie Murphy, Joan Collins, Christopher Plummer, Stella Adler, Brad Davis and Al Pacino.

Berkoff vividly captures the unique and intense kind of closeness that develops during the rehearsal period and the run of a play or the time of a film shoot and the volatile and unpredictable encounters that this sudden and intense intimacy can produce. Full of first-hand stories and observations of the stars he has worked with creatively and seen in the raw, and based in part on his detailed journals. True To Both Myselves

by Katrin Fitzherbert

Read by Sylvia Clarke (1 Cd)

This is a very daring journey into the memory of a life between two nationalities, two sets of values, two lives entirely separated from each other. Fitzherbert not only works through her past with refreshing, and at times astounding honesty, but also provides a window into the minds of those German children who grew up in Germany during the time of the third Reich. By inviting the reader to join her as she re-lives her own life story, she sheds light on questions of national and personal guilt and on gaining an insight into the experiences of young Germans in Nazi Germany.

Vidal - The Autobiography

by Vidal Sassoon Read by Ruth Hill

Vidal Sassoon came from a poor working class background and spent time in a Bethnal Green orphanage with his younger brother Ivor. His mother insisted he train as a ladies hairdresser.

Apprenticed to 'Professor' Adolph Cohen, he was taught the basics. With encouragement from Mr Teasy-Weasy and a client who lent him money he was able to open his first salon. Models, actresses and shop assistants flocked to his salons to have their hair styled into short, geometric shapes and asymmetrical cuts which became Vidals trademark around the world. Sheer hard work, a passion for innovation such as the combined shampoo and conditioner 'wash and go' as well as a zest for life and its opportunities is what made him a success. Names of famous clients and friends pepper the pages like Elizabeth Taylor, Mia Farrow and Mary Quant. This is a well written autobiography of someone who reminds us of the 1960's and 70's and tells us of the passions that drive him. His reward - a CBE in 2009.

Village of Secrets

by Caroline Moorhead

Read by Rita Rosenbaum
A SUNDAY TIMES TOP FIVE BESTSELLER

SHORTLISTED FOR THE SAMUEL JOHNSON PRIZE 2014. From the author of the New York Times bestseller A Train in Winter comes the extraordinary story of a French village that helped save thousands who were pursued by the Gestapo during World War II. High up in the mountains of the southern Massif Central in France lies a cluster of tiny, remote villages united by a long and particular history. During the Nazi occupation, the inhabitants of the Plateau Vivarais Lignon saved several thousand people from the concentration camps. There were no informers, no denunciations. The village kept silent.

After the war, Le Chambon became 1 of only 2 places in the world to be honored by Yad Vashem s Righteous Among Nations. Caroline Moorehead has sought out and interviewed many of the people involved in this extraordinary undertaking, and brings us their unforgettable testimonies. It is a story of a small number of heroic individuals who risked their lives to save others, and of what can be done when people come together to oppose tyranny.
