Lovers And Strangers

by David Grossman

Read by Anthony Tibber (1 Cd)

These two novellas are about love. In the first novella - 'Frenzy', Shaul is convinced that his wife is having an affair. He feverishly imagines her, in every painful detail, with her lover. Esther has never seen the human side of her aloof brother-in-law, but during a night-time journey Shaul unburdens himself, recreating an affair he has never witnessed. Is he mad? Or is it true? In 'Her Body Knows', Rotem has spent most of her life being angry with her mother, Nilli. Now Nilli is dying and Rotem, who has finally found happiness in London, must return to say goodbye. She arrives with a story about Nilli, full of accusations, empathy, love and forgiveness.

Marrying of Chani Kaufman, The

by Eve Harris

Read by Ruth Hill
This is Eve Harris' first book and was long listed for the 2013 Man Booker prize. It delves into the background of ultra-orthodox charedi Jews and arranged marriages. Baruch Levy, 20 sets his heart on Chani Kaufman, 19, whom he glimpses across the mechizah (screen barrier) at a wedding. They come from starkly contrasting backgrounds. Chani, one of eight daughters, growing up in a shabby Hendon home. Her father is a financially strained rabbi and her mother is an exhausted home maker. Baruch's father is a shady wealthy Golders Green landlord. Their home is presided over by his social climbing fashion-conscious mother. Baruch and Chani are both stubborn and single-minded. Each has rejected various suitors offered by the shadchan (match-maker). We are made aware that marriage is a binding agreement between 2 people and will affect family and the wider society. Chani from choice, lacks a religious seminary education deemed necessary for a good wife. Baruch's mother attempts to bully her but to no avail. After the wedding the couple find that their lack of physical knowledge hinders their honeymoon experience. There is an interesting and intriguing parallel story in which Rivka Zilberman, the wife of an ambitious rabbi called Chaim is narrated in detail. Rivka, an outgoing secular Jewess, meets a handsome young South African in Jerusalem in her gap year in the early 1980s. she also has reached a crossroad in her life. There are detailed descriptions of the happenings in both couples lives. An enjoyable and often explicit read.

Memory Chalet, The

by Tony Judt

Read by Victor Kateck (1 Cd)

This is a lovely but in many ways sad book. Written as it was by a renowned historian and intellectual dying from a neurological disease which is robbing him slowly of all ability to move and even to speak but leaving his mind as clear as ever. It covers a wide variety of themes ranging from his memories of childhood to his feelings about being a Jew. He was a noted critic of Israelis policies and to as a university don both in England and America.

Beautifully written it displays an erudition and use of language that could hardly be bettered.

Missing Kissinger

by Etgar Keret

Read by Ruth Hill

These 46 short horror stories, some very short, are written by Etgar Keret a Jewish Israeli writer. One wonders what happened to him in his childhood and youth to enable him to dream up these stories full of strangeness, violence and danger - the Holocaust, sexual disfunction and sadistic birthday magicians. This is a mixed bag of stories. The best are really well - told and days later are recalled for the daring high drama and disturbing inventiveness whilst others are much less appealing.
