Upstairs at the Party

by Linda Grant

Read by Ella Marks
'If you go back and look at your life there are certain scenes, acts, or maybe just incidents on which everything that follows seems to depend. If only you could narrate them, then you might be understood. I mean the part of yourself that you don't know how to explain.'
In the early seventies, a glamorous and androgynous couple known as Evie/Stevie appear out of nowhere on the isolated concrete campus of a new university. To a group of teenagers experimenting with radical ideas, they seem blown back from the future, unsettling everything and uncovering covert desires. But their mesmerizing flamboyant self-expression hides deep anxieties and hidden histories.

For Adele, who also has something to conceal, Evie becomes an obsession - an obsession which becomes lifelong after the night of Adele's twentieth birthday party. What happened that evening and who was complicit are questions that have haunted Adele ever since. A set of school exercise books might reveal everything, but they have been missing for the past forty years.

From summers in 1970s Cornwall to London in the twenty-first century, long after she has disappeared, Evie will go on challenging everyone's ideas of how their lives should turn out.

With her hallmark humour, intelligence and boldness Linda Grant has written a powerful and captivating novel about secrets and the moments that shape our lives.

Wake up, Sir

by Jonathan ames

Read by Anthony Tibber
PLEASE NOTE : SOME SEXUALLY EXPLICIT SCENES & LANGUAGE “WAKE UP, SIR! is an homage to the novels and stories of P.G. Wodehouse. It is the story of a young alcoholic man, Alan Blair, and his valet, Jeeves. Now this Jeeves is not the same Jeeves as featured in Wodehouse - the fact that he possesses the same name is simply a mad coincidence. But, there is something curious about young Alan's valet - is he really there? Is he a mirage, a fantasy, an alcoholic hallucination, an invisible friend? Or does he really exist (as much as anyone can exist in fiction)? Regardless, Jeeves is there in one way or another as Ames brilliantly mimics the structure of many Wodehouse adventures. Please note, that there is explicit language and scenes of a sexual nature in this book”.

We Had It So Good

by Linda Grant

Read by Ella Marks (1 Cd)

This is yet another enjoyable novel from Linda Grant The story follows Stephen Newman and his family during the second half of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first. It begins with him in America and progresses to his life in England. It covers 40 years of his life and that of his family and friends, who are affected by world events of the late 20th century such as the Bosnian War and the London bombings of July 7th. Stephen is getting older and is finding it difficult to come to terms with the way his life has turned out. He wonders what happened to his hopes and ambitions, and to the generation that was going to change the world? This is not a sad book and all the characters seem very real. The chapters sometimes jump us from one person's story abruptly to another's but it is always easy to follow.
