2016-17 Rensselaer Athletics Highlights

  • A total of 1,368 donors contributed $345,551 to Let’s Go Red! in FY17, figures that were up from 763 and $191,599, respectively, from previous fiscal year (FY16)

  • Seventeen men’s hockey student-athletes named to ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team

  • Jamie Jackson ’16 named head golf coach

  • Eight men’s hockey student-athletes invited to participate in National Hockey League (NHL) Development Camps with seven different organizations

  • Bryan Vines named interim head women’s ice hockey coach

  • Student-athlete Will Reilly (Toronto, ON / Nainamo Clippers) chosen in seventh round of NHL Entry Draft (217th overall) by Pittsburgh Penguins, the Stanley Cup Champions

  • Senior Sam Keller (Newtown, PA / Council Rock North), senior Michael Pesanello (Mahwah, NJ / Mahwah), junior Matt Vitagliano (Clear Brook, VA / James Wood) named to CoSIDA National Academic All-America Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field Second Team; Vitgaliano was Third Team in 2016

  • Senior Maddie Dery (Mahopac, NY / Mahopac) named to CoSIDA National Academic All-America Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field First Team; Junior Jaime Lord (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) chosen to Third Team; Dery was also First Team in 2016, while Lord also Third Team in 2016

  • Associate Athletics Director Kevin Beattie presented Irving T. Marsh Award by Eastern College Athletic Conference-Sports Information Directors Association (ECAC-SIDA) based on “exhibited excellence in the field of sports information”

  • Senior Ben Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) named Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year by Liberty League; Senior Michael Pesanello (Mahwah, NJ / Mahwah) named Field Athlete of the Year; Junior Terrence Lawrence (Highland, NY / Highland) named Rookie of the Year

  • Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Coaching Staff chosen as Coaching Staff of the Year by Liberty League

  • Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Coaching Staff chosen as Coaching Staff of the Year by Liberty League

  • Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field teams finish eighth in annual USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award standings; Believed to be highest ever ranking for Engineers

  • Junior swimmer Shanny Lin (El Paso, TX / El Paso) named to CoSIDA National Academic All-America Women’s At-Large First Team; Lin was Third Team in 2016

  • Men’s basketball presented 2016-17 Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award by the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association (CBOA); Given to college or university, which in judgment of CBOA membership, best exemplifies "the highest degree of sportsmanship, character, and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators."

  • Senior Ben Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) is runner-up in 5000 meters at NCAA Championship Meet to earn National All-America

  • Senior Maddie Dery (Mahopac, NY / Mahopac) competes in 3000 meter steeplechase NCAA Championship Meet in Geneva, Ohio; Lord advanced to the finals and finished 11th

  • Sophomore Grant O’Connor (West Hartford, CT / Hall) is third in 10000 meters at NCAA Championship Meet to earn National All-America

  • Senior Stephanie Caudle (Gainesville, FL / Gainesville) named to NFCA All-America Third Team in utility position; Caudle was Second Team in 2016

  • Senior Breanainn McNeally (Severna Park, MD / Archbishop Spaulding) named USILA Men’s Lacrosse All-America Honorable Mention; McNeally was Honorable Mention in 2016

  • Seniors David Gibbs (Stony Brook, NY / Ward Melville) and Breanainn McNeally (Severna Park, MD / Archbishop Spaulding) selected to play in USILA Senior Game

  • Junior Devan Puhl (Frederick, MD / Linganore) named to CoSIDA National Academic All-America Softball First Team; Puhl was First Team in 2016

  • A total of 187 (of 21) teams had term GPAs of 3.0 or better, with the women being led by swimming & diving (3.65) and the men by cross country (3.37)

  • Seniors Breanainn McNeally (Severna Park, MD / Archbishop Spaulding) of lacrosse presented Livingston W. Houston Citizenship Award as the “first citizen of the college”

  • Senior Maddie Dery (Mahopac, NY / Mahopac) of cross country and track & field awarded Leopold L. Balleisen Prize, presented to senior student-athlete who stands highest academically in senior class

  • Sachi Vines, Director of Marketing & Promotions, presented a Dedication and Devotion award at Senior Class Awards Celebration

  • Softball (27-14) concludes season in NCAA Tournament Regional Final, the farthest in post-season the program has ever advanced.

  • Senior Stephanie Caudle (Gainesville, FL / Gainesville) named Liberty League Player of the Year in softball; Caudle was Player of the Year in 2016

  • Amber Maisonet named Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year in softball

  • A total of 86 student-athletes named to Liberty League Spring All-Academic Team

  • Softball wins Liberty League Tournament on home field (rain shortened) and automatic berth into NCAA Tournament; First automatic bid in school history and third overall

  • Men’s Outdoor Track & Field wins New York State Championship Meet

  • Coaching staff named New York State Meet Staff of the Meet

  • Senior Aaron Schauger (Grand Island, NY / Grand Island) finishes in three-way tie for first place at four-round Liberty League Championship Meet with 302; Schauger beaten in playoff

  • The Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2017 of Jay Bernardo '07 (football), Bryan Richardson '96 (hockey), Felicia Tsai 07 (track & field), Stephanie Vanek '06 (softball) and Mike Griffin (basketball coach) inducted in ceremony at Hilton Garden Inn

  • Baseball debuts new artificial turf field at Robison Field

  • Senior Breanainn McNeally (Severna Park, MD / Archbishop Spaulding) sets school men’s lacrosse records for career games (64) and career goals (179)

  • Senior Stephanie Caudle (Gainesville, FL / Gainesville) throws perfect game in 4-0 win at RIT

  • Women’s Outdoor Track & Field wins Liberty League Championship Meet; RPI won 2016 Meet

  • Men’s Outdoor Track & Field wins Liberty League Championship Meet, its ninth consecutive title

  • Senior Ben Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) named Liberty League Championship Meet Track Performer of the Meet for second consecutive season; Senior Michael Pesanello (Mahwah, NJ / Mahwah) named Field Performer of the Meet; Junior Terrence Lawrence (Highland, NY / Highland) named Rookie of the Meet

  • Dave Smith named head men’s hockey coach

  • Senior Ben Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) named Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by Liberty League; Senior Michael Pesanello (Mahwah, NJ / Mahwah) named Field Athlete of the Year

  • Men’s Indoor Track & Field Coaching Staff chosen as Coaching Staff of the Year by Liberty League

  • Sophomore Shanny Lin (El Paso, TX / El Paso) finished second in nation in 200 butterfly at NCAA Championship Meet to earn National All-America; Lin was fourth in 2016; She also competed in two other events in 2017

  • Juniors Danielle Sauve (Walpole, MA / Walpole) and Jessica Sauve (Walpole, MA / Walpole) swam in NCAA Championship Meet, competing in three events; This was Danielle’s third appearance, but first for Jessica; Freshman Jessica Kugelman (Tappan, NY / Tappan Zee) dove at NCAA Championship Meet

  • Senior Ben Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) finishes fourth in 3000 meters at NCAA Championship Meet to earn National All-America

  • Men’s distance medley relay team of senior Colin Smith (Bethesda, MD / Sidwell Friends), sophomore Jason Hall (Victor, NY / Victor), freshman Noah Falasco (King of Prussia, PA / Upper Merion Area) and senior Ben Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) are National Champions and National All-America after winning at NCAA Championship Meet in time of 9:56.42; Squad is first relay team in school history – any sport – to win NCAA title

  • Sophomore Grant O’Connor (West Hartford, CT / Hall) is 13th in 5000 meters at NCAA Championship Meet in Naperville, Illinois

  • Senior Ben Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) selected as USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Men’s Track Athlete of the Year

  • John Lynch chosen as USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year

  • A total of 24 student-athletes named to Liberty League Winter All-Academic Team

  • Men’s Indoor Track & Field wins New York State Meet

  • Senior Ben Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) named New York State Championship Meet Track Performer of the Meet; Junior Terrence Lawrence (Highland, NY / Highland) named Rookie of the Meet

  • Both the men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams finish second in New York State Meets for second consecutive seasons

  • Men’s Indoor Track & Field wins Liberty League Championship Meet

  • Senior Ben Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) named Liberty League Championship Meet Track Performer of the Meet; Senior Michael Pesanello (Mahwah, NJ / Mahwah) named Field Performer of the Meet; Junior Terrence Lawrence (Highland, NY / Highland) named Rookie of the Meet

  • Seniors Matt Hall (Sudbury, MA / Lincoln Sudbury) and Breanainn McNeally (Severna Park, MD / Archbishop Spaulding) selected Division III Preseason All-America Honorable Mention by Face-Off Yearbook

  • Adam Oates '85 is one of the top 100 players to ever play in the NHL, according to panel of distinguished members of hockey community - including executives, media members and NHL alumni; Revealed at NHL100 as league celebrates 100th year as part of All-Star Weekend

  • Laura Horwood scores goal that earned national recognition when it was the No. 7 play on ESPN's Top 10 Plays of the Night; Goal was as espnW's No. 1 Play of the Week on its Top 10 countdown

  • Announcement that men's hockey to join three other schools in annual Northern Irish Connections Friendship Four Tournament to be held in Belfast, Northern Ireland on November 24-25, 2017

  • A total of 17 (of 21) teams had term GPAs of 3.0 or better, with the women being led by swimming & diving (3.43) and the men by cross country (3.29)

  • Sergio Merino named head strength & conditioning coach

  • Erik Burgdoerfer ’10 makes NHL debut with Buffalo Sabres after six seasons in minor leagues

  • Men’s swimming & diving wins Liberty League Championship Meet; Second consecutive

  • Men’s Swimming & Diving Coaching Staff chosen as Coaching Staff of the Year by Liberty League

  • Junior Jessica Sauve (Walpole, MA / Walpole) named Liberty League Championship Swimmer of the Meet; RPI finishes second

  • Football (6-5) defeats Maritime, 38-6, in ECAC Scotty Whitelaw Bowl Championship in Philadelphia, Pa.; Junior running back Mike Tivinis (Middleton, MA / Masconomet) named Most Valuable Player

  • Sophomore Grant O’Connor (West Hartford, CT / Hall) earns National All-America in men's cross country after finishing 25th at the NCAA Championship in the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky.; RPI finished a school-record 13th overall

  • Junior Jaime Lord (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) finished 19th overall to repeat as National All-America; RPI finished 18th in the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championships at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky.

  • Junior Steven Collins (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central Regional) named to CoSIDA National Academic All-America Men’s Soccer First Team

  • Football wins Dutchman Shoes Trophy for school-record fourth straight year, defeating Union, 21-12

  • Freshman goalkeeper Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD / Southern) named Liberty League Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Year

  • School-record seven named All-Liberty League in women’s soccer

  • Senior forward Devon Baughen (Sarasota, FL / Pine View) named Liberty League Men’s Soccer Player of the Year; Baughen was first player in Liberty League history to record at least one point in every conference game in a season

  • Freshman men’s tennis student-athlete Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, FL / Wiregrass Ranch) named ECAC Division III Rookie of the Month for October

  • A total of 70 student-athletes named to Liberty League Fall All-Academic Team

  • Women’s soccer advances to Liberty League Championship Game for first time in school history

  • Women’s cross country wins Liberty League Championship for second straight season

  • Men’s cross country wins Liberty League Championship; Senior Ben Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) wins individual championship

  • Freshman goalkeeper Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD / Southern) sets women’s soccer shutout record

  • Freshmen Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, FL / Wiregrass Ranch) and Zack Ebenfeld (Pembroke Pines, FL / American Heritage) win Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Doubles Tournament to become first two in school history to win an ITA Regional and first National All-Americans in program history

  • Katie Bishop named Athletics Compliance Specialist

  • Junior Shanny Lin (El Paso, TX / El Paso) named Pre-Season National All-America by CollegeSwimming.com

  • The year-end athletic department awards for the 2015-16 were presented to Taylor Ten Eyck ‘16 (softball) and Jamie Jackson ‘16 (golf) as Richard S. Lyon Career Athletes of the Year; Ben Fazio ’17 (cross country, track & field) and Shanny Lin ’18 (swimming) as the Athletes of the Year; and Lovisa Selander ’19 (ice hockey) and Brendan McNerney ’19 (baseball) as Freshmen of the Year
