RESOLUTION 2016-660-A
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND HONORING FIVE BANK OF AMERICA STUDENT LEADERS WHO REPRESENT THE BEST IN OUR CITY’S SCHOLARS AND FUTURE LEADERS; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, it is exceedingly fortunate that Jacksonville’s business community has always partnered with our educators in identifying, encouraging and supporting students who have demonstrated scholarly achievements and promising leadership skills that benefit their schools and our community; and
WHEREAS, since its inception in 2004, the Bank of America Student Leaders Program has recognized more than 2,200 exemplary high school juniors and seniors who have a passion for improving their communities; and
WHEREAS, the program helps students better understand how nonprofits have an impact on communities by providing the students with a summer eight-week internship with a nonprofit organization selected by the bank; the internship provides the students with opportunities to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience while raising their awareness of community issues; and
WHEREAS, the student leaders are provided the opportunity to attend a week-long, expense-paid Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D. C., conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the summit introduces over 200 students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and discusses how to build a more diverse and inclusive society; and
WHEREAS, Bank of America in Jacksonville honored the following five student leaders: Anthony Bell, a recent Paxon School of Advanced Studies graduate who is studying industrial engineering at Florida A&M; Kush Desai, an Atlantic Coast High School senior; Jornee Harris, a Paxon senior; Emma Stotlemyer, a recent Providence School graduate who is studying biology at Baylor University; and JaRon Weatherspoon, a recent Robert E. Lee High School graduate who is studying mechanical engineering at Florida A&M; and
WHEREAS, bank official Gregory Smith summarized the goal of Bank of America’s Student Leaders Program aptly: it is vital to help accomplished local students hone their leadership skills, so they can play future roles in building a “thriving Jacksonville economy;” now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Jacksonville:
Section 1. The City Council does hereby recognize and honor five Bank of America student leaders who represent the best in our City’s young scholars and future leaders and wishes them continued successes in the years ahead.
Section 2. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon signature by the Mayor or upon becoming effective without the Mayor's signature.
