Can we all be pissed at Square Enix for a while in this topic?

I just don't wanna be mad all alone. :(

After playing through more of Chrono Cross (see Mac's topic -- it's the sexy thing to do), I'm wondering why SquEnix is still ignoring all fan demands. This game is phenomenal; in all honesty, Chrono Cross is one of the best RPGs I've ever played and I'm certain it deserves a spot among the best RPGs of all time. This game is excellent.

So where's Chrono Break? A copyright was taken for this name by Square in 2001, but in 2003 (I think it was '03) it was dropped. Wikipedia's Chrono page says there are no plans at this time for another installment in the series, despite the fact that fans have been shouting at the top of their lungs for one for years on end now. What gives?

Chrono Trigger's been re-released three different times on different consoles. It's obviously still making enough money for SquEnix to be interested in its profits. In 2008, Game Informer put Chrono Trigger into their eighth spot on their Top 10 Sequels in Demand, and in 2009 the game was put by Famitsu in 14th place out of 50 games of which readers most wanted to see sequels.

Why do they keep making side-projects to the Kingdom Hearts universe when everyone only wants Kingdom Hearts III, and why do they keep making sequels to the lackluster FFXIII when fans would rabidly eat up remakes of FFVI or VII? Why did they sink their money into FFIX, an MMO which Square actually apologized for on at least two different occasions, and which the CEO of SquEnix basically called a blight on the FF series' name?

I'm pretty sure this company's ability to make good decisions has all-but left it. The only thing I don't hate about Square Enix right now is the Dissidia franchise, and even Dissidia II had a few gaping and completely unnecessary missteps in it.

I want my Chrono Break more than anything, but it's something that I'm really terrified about. For one, the old team at Square is completely dissolved and getting the main people involved with Trigger and Cross back together seems impossible, but more than that I'm afraid that Square would give in to (stupid) fan demands and have Chrono Break be a direct sequel to Trigger where you get to play as Crono and the gang again, and that'd be a big mistake and a slap in the face of creative development.

If Break ever did come out, I'd imagine its story would have to be another evolution on the series. Trigger dealt with time travel and Cross did inter-dimensional travel as well as reflecting on the heavy consequences of the events of Trigger, so I imagine that Break would live up to its name by completely destroying the timeline, perhaps even rewriting events of Trigger or ending in such a way as to make a new timeline where Lavos never falls to Earth, or something like that. I would actually really enjoy that kind of story, but only if you play as a new character and not Crono again.

And I could never get into Kingdom Hearts. I really like the concept, but the convoluted story and the bleh combat system really turn me off.

Haven't played FF6 for awhile, but I've got a treat for you guys. There's a glitch in the game that'll let you use the airship early, up to the very beginning of the game even! You have to get halfway through the game without saving to do it, but it's pretty cool.

TanukiTeabag (....) shows how to do it in this video:

The same guy showcases various ways this will end up breaking the game in other videos, but perhaps the most spectacular is visiting the Opera House with someone you shouldn't have at the time...

I've read about that before. I've been wanting to find the time to play around with that.

The ultimate purpose? Fun? A moogle/ghost/Leo challenge?

That is so messed on so many levels. The possibilities are endless.

It's a shame that the method was revealed so early--imagine if someone took the time to play through with only one save on the original SNES cart and then filmed themselves playing with General Leo in his party. "Resurrect General Leo" rumors would be circulating for so long and spark so much more crazy experimentation. Who knows what else people would find?

I think that's what happened the last time I set up for playing Cross, heh.

The ghost ship can be a little annoying when the ghost enemies spawn out of nowhere and surprise you. The little breathing sound they make when they appear gets ingrained in your memory and it just terrifies you every time you hear it because you know it's an encounter you can't avoid. The fights themselves weren't very hard, but they were frequent and often for little reward, and even the NPC pirates give you crap for helping them out. I remembered that the key you needed to find was with the first pirate you actually come across, so I didn't have to go hunting for it, and from there it's running around down below trying my best to avoid more fights. I also got Pip to join my party, and I've actually been kind of interested in seeing how this guy plays out, 'cause apparently he "evolves" to different forms depending on how you use him, and I find that interesting. There are a few unique characters that I never took the time to appreciate, like Sprigg later.

When Fargo tells you to man the wheel I thought it meant that I'd actually be steering the ship, but it actually just means "go kill this giant monster while I sit back and watch". I screwed myself early in the bossfight because I held back from using one of my White techs so that I could fill the area with White first, to make it do more damage, but before I could bother with that strategy the boss used the tech that makes all elements do half-damage--what a jerk. He then cursed my entire party and did massive damage on Guile, but thankfully decided to avoid attacking him after that. It was a close fight only because I was doing half the damage I should have been, otherwise I would have crippled him good. Glenn's accuracy totally blows and I need to find a way to upgrade that. He's actually not as useful as I thought he'd be early in the game, so I guess I have to wait until he has dual Einlanzers before he really shows his worth.

I went to the Water Dragon Isle but couldn't find anything to do there, and I actually wasn't sure what was next so I went back to Guldove to check on Kid and thankfully that's where I was supposed to go. The Doc "joins" my party, but I couldn't switch to him yet, so I dunno how that works, exactly.

I moved back to the Home World and saved just outside of the Water Dragon Isle, so we'll see what happens here when I get to it. I also just recorded video #2 for my NG3 playthrough, and I'll have to get that edited and uploaded later.

About 20 hours, I think--same length as Trigger. It's actually fairly short for an RPG, but the perfect length for me.

as well as some from those "boxer brothers" where you have to pick the right chest to get an item, and the wrong one makes you fight them.

A trick to those fights is that if you select the wrong brother, just run from battle and initiate again. You can do this indefinitely until you select the right box.

but after you solve the puzzle in there you can't claim the spoils because you need Viper in your party to do so.

I actually read up on this earlier because I was in the same place today before coming to work, and apparently you can get at least one piece of treasure from this room later. When you take the Decoy Shield and give it to the suit that's missing it and then push the snake statue into place after the fight, it opens up that wall and there's that room with the two viper heads spewing out super-pressurized water that you can't pass. Well, if you come back "later," this walkthrough said, the guard in the first room will move out of the way, giving access to the switch behind him.

Maybe you knew all that already, and if you did, a question: When they say "later," do they mean you need to come back with Viper in your party to get the guard to move?

There are also a couple of chests that only Zoah and Karsh can open

Also unsure if you're aware, but if you try to open the chest in Karsh's room 20 times, he'll let you take what's inside. I don't know if I've ever figured out how to open Zoah's chest.

Guile is awesome.

YES. By far one of my favorite characters in the game. His level 3 attack is awesome and his magic stat is insane. Today I was fighting a Portalgheist (one of the doors with the eyeball), and even when the field was pure White, his WandaIn tech still did a solid 80 points of damage to the enemy. That's unreal when compared with Serge's Dash&Slash tech, which did 42 points against the same enemy when the field only had two White spots. I <3 Guile so hard.

Had you really never used him before? I can never convince myself to pass him up.

I let the intro play a little longer this time because I was eating a sandwich ... none of them actually play out like they do in the game.

That's interesting, I guess I never noticed that. What I will say is that I absolutely adore the music played in that intro. Yasunori Mitsuda is brilliant.

I'm currently in Viper Manor myself. I just explored all the rooms in the first area on the main level and the basement. After exploring everything I opened the front door with the rotating snake statue and saved my game shortly after.

I totally did not know any of that. And this is my first time ever using Guile, so his awesomeness comes as a surprise to me.

I went through Water Dragon Isle, where all of the fairies get ****ing murdered. Geez, talk about being a darker game than Trigger; I'm only five hours in and we're already on the brink of genociding innocent little fairies. The gnomes are despicable in design and their dialogue, but the way everything ties back to being the fault of the humans puts a weight to the whole scene. I know if you go by the Razzly route it's actually your fault that they're there because you clear them out of the Hydra Marsh, but this scene worked well enough without that knowledge. One of the fairies says something along the lines of "you humans never think about the consequences of your actions", which I guess is what a lot of this game is about, eh?

There is a short campfire scene between just Kid and Serge, where Kid gives a little bit of backstory on her character and her involvement with Lucca. Something that Kid said caught my attention, in that she was going on about how she has to be tough and cruel because those are the kind of human beings that survive, and those are the kind of human beings that we've essentially evolved into, and that kindness and what we'd ironically call "humanity" is becoming obsolete.

Considering the insinuations that humans as we know them in this game are a result of Lavos' landing, what does that imply? Is it the touch of Lavos that corrupted mankind but also made it possible for them to survive this long? If that's the case, what does a future without Lavos look like? Is it one of peace and prosperity or one where nature governs all and there are no humans to disrupt the balance?

I'm just asking questions, but I can't really provide any interpretation of my own yet. I still need to refresh my memory of what happened in Chronopolis before I can begin to really think at this.

Chrono Cross spoilers

Finally began! Mac said so many things beautifully, so my commentary will be to a minimum, but a few notes:

I played up to after Arni Village in Another World where you find out that you are dead. I got Poshul to join my party immediately in Home World. The waitresses poem was really cool and it actually had elements of Fred Niezsche'ian philosophy laced into it. I found that very cool.

It's very cool how most things changed. Some did a 180 and changed in the direct opposite direction. Serge being dead/alive. The old people in the village complaining about rain/dry season. Leena being a bit of a b**** to the kids/being nice and understanding of the kids. It's really cool.

A really powerful moment is when you talk to the fisherman's wife and she tells you that her husband basically gave up being a fisherman as a direct result of Serge dying. That's kind of chilling when you think about it.

Also, the fisherman was worshipping Mojo while standing in the middle of...the f***ing Triforce! I wonder if that is just a coincidence, or an homage to Zelda?

I played for a good hour and a half and explored all nooks and crannies. It's so sad how not only Serge dies in Another World, but his parents do too. Arni Village is such an engrossing town.
