Day 1: Blue Beetle
Super Hero Snapshot:
Real Name: Jaime Reyes
Home: El Paso
Created by: Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski
Special Powers/Abilities: Blue Beetle’s powers come from a beetle-shaped device called a scarab, which plummeted to Earth from outer space. When danger appears, the scarab activates, and envelops Jaime’s body in an indestructible armored suit! The armor can form many weapons, and gives Jaime the ability to fly and shoot laser beams.
Story: High schooler Jaime Reyes was minding his own business one day when the scarab, a relic of great power, fell from space and bonded with his spine.
Jaime’s life would never be the same. Overnight he was transformed from a normal high school kid into a powerful new superhero. He now boasted awesome power and abilities that he chose to use for good. Jamie intended to protect people and uphold justice.
His new powers are insect-like, from his unbreakable armor and flying skills, to the energy radiating from the suit’s antennae! Many people, including other superheroes, think Jaime is too young for this newfound responsibility.
1 Timothy 4:12 NCV
Just because you are young, does not make you unimportant. Do not let anyone treat you as such. Instead, be an example to believers with your words, your actions, your love, your faith, and your pure life.
I bet there has been a time that you have been told you are too young to do something. For example, you can’t get your driver’s license until you are sixteen, and it’s hard to get a job until you are an older teen. Age tends to limit us when it comes to certain things, but not when it comes to God.
When you become a Christian, no matter how old you are, you are charged to be an example for Christ! You must share your faith with others. Be an example to believers and nonbelievers alike! The way you live your faith is a witness everyday. There is a place for all of us to serve in our church despite our age. Just like the Blue Beetle, we can’t be afraid to step up and be the hero God intends for us to be!
Have you ever been told you are too young? What can you start doing for Christ despite your age?
Day 2: Martian Manhunter
Super Hero Snapshot:
Real Name: J’onn J’onzz/John Jones
Home: Mars
Created by: Joseph Samachson and Joe Certa
Special Powers/Abilities: Martian Manhunter possesses multiple special powers, including super-strength, super-speed, and invisibility. His physical strength is believed to equal or exceed Superman’s! Martian Manhunter also has telepathic powers, can fly, and has the ability to shape shift. He can assume a humanoid or grotesque form, lengthen his limbs, and even grow to immense size. During meetings of the Justice League or while visible in public, he usually takes a form more acceptable to humans.
Story: Martian Manhunter lost his entire family when his home planet of Mars was struck by a terrible plague. He was crushed by this horrible loss, and was accidentally transported to Earth while he was in mourning. He was unable to return to Mars, and decided to try his best to fit into Earth society.
He eventually joined the Justice League of America to use his powers to help people. He uses his shape-shifting powers to adopt the human form of John Jones to fit in with other humans. If he looks like everyone else, he won’t stand out, and people won’t be afraid of him.
Romans 12:2 NASB
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
A lot of times as teenagers, we try to be like the rest of our friends. If we aren’t careful, it can become the way we find our identity. If those friends are fellow Christians, that can be okay. But if those friends are nonbelievers, we can end up hurting our relationship with Christ.
When we conform to the world, we end up making decisions based on ungodly things. We aren’t focused on what God has for our life. Instead we rely on ourselves and what the world says is right. Worldly pleasure is temporary. True joy comes through our relationship with Jesus Christ. As Christians we shouldn’t have to change who we are to fit in. We cannot hide our faith, but let Christ shine through us to those around us.
Matthew 5:14-16 ESV
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
In your own life, is it more important to be like your friends or to be like Christ? If you answered friends, what changes can you make to be more like Christ?
Day 3: Doomsday
Super Villain Snapshot:
Real Name: None
Home: Krypton
Created by: Dan Jurgens
Special Powers/Abilities: Doomsday is unstoppable. He possesses super strength and super speed. He can’t fly, but he can leap extremely high. Sharp bones protrude from his skin. These jagged pieces of his skeleton serve as additional weapons in combat, and are so strong they even cut Superman! He also has the power to heal very quickly. Doomsday is a creature of pure rage, and it is impossible to reason with him.
Story: Doomsday is the monster who killed Superman. Like Frankenstein, he is a genetic experiment that went horribly wrong. He first appeared in "The Death of Superman" story arc, in which he mysteriously clawed his way out of a steel holding cell buried deep within the earth.
After tunneling out of his prison, he began to slaughter and demolish everything in his path. No one knew why he was so out of control, or what his final purpose was. It was simply evident that he had a murderous and destructive nature. Doomsday was overwhelming, and he easily crushed the Justice League before ultimately taking the life of Superman.
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Sin is a lot like Doomsday. At times, it can seem like an unstoppable force in our lives. Even though we may feel as strong as Superman, sin can knock us down. We have to turn from the sin in our lives; we can’t give in so easily to temptation.
We have the key to defeat the “Doomsdays” in our lives. It is the forgiveness we receive by accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior. We then have something on our side greater than super strength or heat vision. We have the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit gives us the power to resist sin and live a life for Christ. It isn’t an easy battle, but through Christ, we can overcome sin in our lives!
1 Corinthians 15:57 NIV
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
What sins in your life feel unstoppable? What can be your first step in defeating the “Doomsday” in your life?
Day 4: Booster Gold
Super Hero Snapshot:
Real Name: Michael Jon Carter
Home: 25th Century Gotham City
Created by: Dan Jurgens
Special Powers/Abilities: Booster Gold is a great athlete. After stealing superhero artifacts from a 25th century museum, he combined the equipment into his own crusading identity. These pilfered items include a power suit that makes him incredibly strong, and wrist blasters that fire force blasts. His belt can create a protective force field, and his goggles have infrared capabilities. The Legion Flight Ring allows him to fly (also stolen).
Story: Booster Gold traveled from the future with one goal: to become rich and famous! Despite his arrogance and ego, he became an unlikely hero. He eventually teamed up with time-traveler Rip Hunter, in order to protect history throughout the time stream. The duo’s main goal was to prevent villains from changing the past.
Although Booster boasts some fighting skills, he tries to employ his charm and swagger to get him out of tough situations. In the end, his egotism and past exploits continue to haunt him, despite his heroic deeds.
Proverbs 16:18 NCV
Pride leads to destruction; a proud attitude brings ruin.
God hates arrogance. When we display pride and arrogance in our lives we take the focus away from our Creator and place it on ourselves. Pride is the opposite of humility.
We have to remember that all good things come from God. Whether it’s the talents He has given us, the opportunities for success in our lives, or our innate abilities, they all come from God. Let’s not forget the most arrogant figure of all: the devil. The devil’s pride continues to cause destruction today! In a world consumed with pride and focused on self, remaining humble can be a huge witness for Christ!
Seek God’s forgiveness if you are struggling with arrogance. Ask God to help you to seek humility.
Psalm 25:9 NIV
He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.
Do you struggle with arrogance? In what areas in your life can you demonstate more humility?
Day 5: Brainiac
Super Villain Snapshot:
Real Name: Vril Dox
Home: Colu
Created by: Otto Binder and Al Plastino
Special Powers/Abilities: Brainiac is extremely intelligent. His intellect more than doubles our own. He is skilled in hand to hand combat, but prefers battle in his skull-shaped spaceship, which is loaded with deadly weapons. Brainiac can transfer his consciousness, replicate himself, and master any technical system. He can even use his mental powers to control space and time.
Story: Brainiac is very evil, and is obsessed with his quest for knowledge. His technology can shrink vast cities down to a tiny size; all building and inhabitants will fit into a glass bottle. He has traveled the universe for centuries, seeking new cities to add to his collection of bottled populations.
At one time he had his sights set on Metropolis, Superman’s home. Superman eventually defeated Brainiac, earning the Man of Steel a new arch enemy. Brainiac hates Superman and continues to look for ways to overcome him. The malevolent genius’s quest for knowledge has a sole purpose: to gain more power and control. He uses his vast intellect for evil instead of good.
What does the Bible teach us about knowledge?
Proverbs 2:6 NCV
Only the Lord gives wisdom; He gives knowledge and understanding.
In the Bible knowledge represents an understanding, a recognition, or an acknowledgment. In Scripture, we see knowledge as having a deep appreciation for something or having a relationship with someone.
The Bible is crystal clear in showing us that having knowledge of God is the most important knowledge a human being can possess. We can’t just be aware of God’s existence. That’s not enough! You could have the Bible completely memorized, and know where to find anything in it, but it is meaningless if you don’t have a relationship with God. We have to know him and appreciate him!
Our quest for biblical knowledge has to be rooted in our relationship with Christ. It will only help us grow and be more effective for Him. Brainiac’s obsessive quest for knowledge can be an example to us as we seek Christ. Unlike Brainiac, we will use our newfound knowledge to serve our awesome God!
What can you do in your life to seek knowledge and wisdom from God?
Day 6: Solomon Grundy
Super Hero Snapshot:
Real Name: Cyrus Gold
Home: Gotham City
Created By: Alfred Bester and Paul Reinman
Special Powers/Abilities: Solomon Grundy has super human strength, serious stamina, and is invulnerable to most attacks. He received his magical powers when he was killed and thrown into Slaughter Swamp. Whenever you defeat him, he can come back to life, but the resurrection sometimes affects his level of intelligence and strength.
Story: Cyrus Gold was a merchant in the mid-1800s. He was murdered and his body was thrown into Slaughter Swamp (outside of Gotham City). After 50 years, he rose from the swamp as a powerful zombie super-villain named Solomon Grundy. Even though he lives a life of crime, Grundy ends up being taken advantage of by much smarter bad guys. The only life left for this giant zombie is a life filled with villainous activity.
Zombies fascinate our society. There are zombie books, comics, TV shows, video games, and movies. Zombies are everywhere!
Zombies remind me of the Pharisees of Jesus’ time. Pharisees were the opposite of the undead. You see, the Pharisees were like spiritual zombies. They walked with the appearance of spiritual life - because they knew God’s laws and acted religiously - but they were spiritually dead.
Matthew 23:27-28 NCV
How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You are like tombs that are painted white. Outside, those tombs look fine, but inside, they are full of the bones of dead people and all kinds of unclean things. It is the same with you. People look at you and think you are good, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and evil.
What does a modern day Pharisee look like?
Picture someone who wears a Christian T-shirt, a Christian bracelet, and walks with a Bible under their arm. Now picture this same person partying, cussing, and doing drugs. Sounds pretty hypocritical, right? As Christians we can’t be spiritually dead, we have to be alive in Christ! We must practice what we preach. Being a Pharisee not only hurts your faith, but it affects others as well. You can lead people away from God.
Isaiah 29:13 NCV
The Lord says: “These people worship me with their mouths, and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is based on nothing but human rules.”
Don’t be filled with death on the inside while wearing your Jesus clothes on the outside!
What area of your life are you a zombie, and what can you do to change it?
Day 7: Clayface
Super Villain Snapshot:
Real Name: Basil Karlo
Home: Gotham City
Created by: Bob Kane
Special Powers/Abilities: Clayface possesses the ability to regenerate his body, alter his size and shape, and can change into any form imaginable. He has superhuman strength, agility, and stamina. His shape-shifting abilities also allow him to form solid weapons from his mud-like body.
Story: Boris Karlo was a skilled actor. He was driven insane when he discovered his studio was remaking a classic horror movie—one that he had starred in. Later his body was chemically altered, transforming Boris into a creature composed of muddy clay. He used his newfound powers for evil, and eventually became an arch villain of Batman.
Mud transformed an insane and bitter actor into a super villain. In the Bible, Jesus used mud to restore sight to the blind! Check out the story in John.
John 9:6-12 NCV
After Jesus said this, he spit on the ground and made some mud with it and put the mud on the man’s eyes. Then he told the man, “Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam.” (Siloam means Sent.) So the man went, washed, and came back seeing. The neighbors and some people who had earlier seen this man begging said, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg? Some said, “He is the one,” but others said, “No, he only looks like him.” The man himself said, “I am the man.” They asked, “How did you get your sight?” He answered, “The man named Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. Then he told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.” They asked him, “Where is this man?” “I don’t know,” he answered.
In the hands of Jesus Christ, ordinary things like spit and mud become extraordinary. They restored sight to the blind! The Bible is filled with examples of God turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. Most involve everyday people like David, a common boy who used a common sling to slay a fearsome giant.
In God’s hands, we can do extraordinary things! You may have something in your life you feel is ordinary. God is just waiting for you to give it to Him, so He can transform it into something great!
Day 8: Etrigan the Demon
Super Hero/Villain Snapshot:
Real Name: Jason Blood
Home: Hell
Created by: Jack Kirby
Special Powers/Abilities: The Demon possesses superhuman strength. He has even been known to stand toe-to-toe with Superman and Wonder Woman! The Demon can also spew hell fire from his body, most often from his mouth. He has very sharp fangs and claws, powerful magical abilities, and can heal himself when injured. The Demon enjoys pain, which makes him fearless in battle.
Story: Magic expert Jason Blood can protect himself in the world of magic by transforming into a powerful Demon known as Etrigan. The Demon is known for his ability to speak in rhymes, and has been a part of Jason Blood’s life since the Middle Ages. Even though The Demon is a servant of hell, he usually is allied with the forces of good.
Are Demons real? Like Etrigan, do they usually align themselves with the good guys?
Demons belong in hell. That’s where they are going to spend eternity, and their one pleasure in life is to take as many human souls with them as possible. Demons hate God, and you, and me. They enjoy seeing us suffer, and will do everything they possibly can to hurt us. Jesus tells us in Mark 16:17 that if we believe and have a relationship with him, demons will have no power over us.
Mark 16:17 NCV
And those who believe will be able to do these things as proof: They will use my name to force out demons.”
Demons want us to be afraid, but they are totally powerless when facing the love and power of Jesus Christ. As long as we are in a right relationship with Jesus Christ, we have nothing to fear from hell!
Day 9: Lex Luthor
Super Villain Snapshot:
Real Name: Alexander Joseph Luthor
Home: Metropolis
Created by: Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster
Special Powers/Abilities: Although Lex Luthor is a human and has no super powers, he has other qualities that make him a formidable opponent. Luthor is a genius, a scientist, and an inventor. He is also a skilled fighter and master manipulator. Instead of using his superior intellect and billionaire fortune for good, he pursues his own selfish desires.
Story: Lex Luthor is the arch nemesis of Superman. Luthor not only hates Superman for always foiling his evil plans, he also hates the Man of Steel most of all for being an alien from the planet Krypton.
Luthor is prejudiced against Superman for what the Kryptonian represents. As an alien who came to Earth to protect humans, Superman has vast powers and abilities granted to him by our planet’s yellow sun. Luthor views it as unfair that an extraterrestrial can come here and possess awesome power without working for it. Superman’s very nature contradicts all of Luthor’s human achievements.
Genesis 1:26-27 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
There is only one race, the human race! Caucasians, Africans, Asians, Indians, Arabs, and Jews are not different races. They are just different ethnicities of the human race. Even though we can look different, we are the same. Above all of our minor differences, we are all created in God’s image! God sent His son Jesus Christ to die for each and every one of us, despite our differences.
In John 13:34, Jesus commands us to love one another as He loves us. God doesn’t play favorites with His love! We must treat everyone with the same love and respect that God shows us. This kind of love is what sets us apart from the world. People will know us by His love!
Ephesians 4:32 NCV
Be kind and loving to each other, and forgive each other just as God forgave you in Christ.
Can you think of a person or a group that you discriminate against? How can you show them the love of Christ?
Day 10: Red Tornado
Super Hero Snapshot:
Real Name: John Smith
Home: Happy Harbor, Rhode Island
Created by: Gardner Fox and Dick Dillin
Special Powers/Abilities: Red Tornado’s android body contains a powerful elemental force, which gives him the ability to create cyclones, fly, and shoot blasts of wind. His winds can also act as a force field and deflect attacks. Red Tornado’s body has been rebuilt many times, growing stronger with each new upgrade.
Story: Red Tornado is an android superhero with mind controlling powers, in addition to his incredible strength and speed. His cybernetic form, created by the super-villain T.O. Morrow, houses a sentient wind elemental named Ulthoon. Despite his mechanical nature, he has a human wife named Kathy Sutton and a daughter named Traya, residing with him in Happy Harbor. He is primarily a member of the Justice League, although he has also been a member of Primal Force and Young Justice.
Tornados can represent whirlwinds in our own lives. We can feel like wreckage is hitting us from all directions at once! Red Tornado is able to harness that powerful tornado force for good. How can we get control of the whirlwinds in our lives?
Acts 20:19 NIV
I served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents.
If you are anything like me, you tend to take on too much. You feel overwhelmed. Have you ever felt that life is like a tornado, hurling debris at you at hurricane speeds? You solve a problem and another one hits you in the face. Life can definitely seem overwhelming at times, but it is how we approach a problem that matters. Do we delight in our trials, or do we consider them tests of our faith? What we do with the time we’ve been given is the challenge that we all have to answer. So when life throws everything it has at you, remember – This one thing remains: His love never ever, ever fails.
Hold on. And Pray.
