Overview: This unit is assessed internally via a controlled assignment in which the learners must produce a range of design ideas in 3D plus a short report to cover the other assessment criteria. The assignment requires the learners to produce a range of 3D CAD models of design ideas plus short report including digital evidence and screen shots.

This unit will enable learners to acquire skills; knowledge and understanding of the role of computer aided design in engineering. The learners will gain knowledge of how computers and software packages are used for modelling and to provide data for a variety of engineering purposes, including design, testing and planning for manufacture.

Practical work using CAD can reflect learner’s own interests and the design process may contribute to other units such as F558 Selection and application of engineering materials.

There are opportunities for Learners to both develop and demonstrate their PLT’s.



Learners will be able to:

Plan and carry out research to identify a range of applications of CAD/CAM within design and manufacturing systems. Undertake a formative evaluation of the research



  1. initial activity on preparing for the industrial visit

  2. recap on any L2 qualifications that may have introduced this subject to the learners

  3. groups to produce checklist/work sheet for visit

  4. completed worksheets displayed for others after visit

  • Industrial visit to see products being made and the role that computers and CAD played in the process



  • Internet access

  • This topic should take a number of lessons to complete



  • It is assumed that learners have acquired some experience of design software at KS4



  • This topic enables learners to both acquire the required knowledge and understanding and the skills required for the controlled assessment task.

Plan and carry out research to identify applications of concurrent engineering within design and manufacturing systems. Undertake a formative evaluation of the research

  1. Presenter led discussion on what is the definition of a concurrent system with examples

  2. group activity: identify and describe all the stages in a concurrent system. What are the benefits and list possible problems that it could encounter

  • Examples of products that have benefited from this system e.g. mobile phones, aerospace (Boeing and Airbus) etc

  1. Presenter to assess the learners level of previous CAD experience, via a test or worksheets, and develop a suitable delivery approach

  2. various approaches could be taken depending on the learners previous KS 4 experience e.g. workbooks, components to draw, unfinished drawings to complete

  • Examples of engineered components for learners to ‘reverse engineer’ and produce accurate drawings

  • It is assumed that learners have acquired some experience of design software at KS4 and this topic will built on that

  2. Presenter led discussion on comparing standard drawings with non standard examples

  3. Groups to discuss and analyse existing or peer examples of drawings with suggestions for improvements

  4. Learners to produce 2D/3D accurate drawings after feedback and modification

Learners will:

Select appropriate materials and processes when designing for manufacture. Test and simulate design ideas. Make and apply any necessary modifications



  1. Learners will ideally use the drawings previous created and run test to prove them

  2. Learners to also use software to simulate their drawn component operating within an assembly

  3. Learners to also produce a prototype from their drawing

  • Back ground info, examples and demonstrations of virtual testing and simulations e.g. finite element analysis, load bearing evaluation, thermal transfer and components in motion

Reverse Engineering

OCR recognises that the teaching of this qualification above will vary greatly from school to school and from teacher to teacher. With that in mind this lesson plan is offered, as a possible approach but will be subject to modifications by the individual teacher.

Lesson length is assumed to be one hour.
