Arts and Crafts of Ilocos RegionThe Philippines has a large number of cultural and linguistic groups. One of the largest is the Ilocano group. The mainstreams are living in Abra, Isabela, La Union, and other parts of the country. They are historically highly influenced by Christianity. This is evident in the architectural structures built during colonial times in various places in the region. Observe the designs and structures of Saint Augustine Church (Iglesia de San Agustin de Paoay) or commonly known as Paoay Church. The historic town of Vigan was considered the "Intramuros of the North," which retains the Spanish colonial architecture. Along its narrow and cobblestone streets known as Calle Crisologo, will provide everyone with a nostalgic feeling when they saw it personally. These old Spanish-type houses have huge, highpitched roofs, large and rectangular living rooms made of adobe, bricks, lime, terracotta, hardwood floors, and windows capiz shells framed in the wooden window panel. Calle Crisologo Paoay ChurchThe Ilocos region is known for inabel fabrics. This unique fabric is made from cotton that underwent the process of binatbatan. The different designs represent different meanings: the dizzying "binakol" weave represents the waves of the sea. They believe that this design protects them from evil spirits. The inabel designs are inspired by natural elements: patterns that depict different landforms, the colors of flowers and vegetation, plaid, zigzags, animal patterns, the ocean waves, or the glittering night sky. The Ilocanos are also known for their centuries-old tradition of burnay pottery. Burnay is an unglazed earthen jar with a small opening.
