Seattle Central Community College pilr project Q1 – Planning (Spring 2011): a summary of activities during the quarter Faculty: Jacquie George Librarian: Deanna Sukkar
Librarian: Deanna Sukkar Jacquie George and Deanna Sukkar met five times throughout the quarter to discuss curriculum ideas, teaching styles, library sessions and outcomes for Jacquie’s ESL 098/099 classes. Jacquie talked about her student population, their search habits and work on previous assignments.
For this project, Jacquie suggested creating an assignment centered on NPR’s 50 Great Voices Series. Each student would be required to create a Research Guide for the assignment, as a tool to help effectively conduct and organize his or her research. Deanna thought this assignment would work well and could be easily adapted to include opportunities to introduce information literacy skills. We discussed IL needs for the assignment, corresponding instruction topics and insertion points for four library sessions.
Jacquie piloted the 50 Great Voices assignment this quarter and felt it went well. This trial helped us solidify the areas on which to focus. We adjusted and reformatted the Research Guide to better reflect our chosen outcomes. To encourage students to seek help from librarians and overcome any fears they may have in approaching the ref desk, we will be requiring the students to use a modified Library Prescription. As Jacquie’s students responded well to discussion forums, we decided to incorporate a peer forum into the Evaluation module. Addressing the challenge students have in understanding library vocabulary, we will be including Angel-generated crossword puzzles to be completed before each library session. Because citations are so difficult for students and as this will be a hybrid class, we will be using an online tutorial for this component and Deanna will be embedded for a citation exercise. Deanna used the assessment tool, WASSAIL, this quarter and recommended its use as a “before and after test,” linked to two library sessions.
