PRESIDENTS TALK: President Bryan ran the raffle and then turned the meeting over to Marge.
SPEAKER: Marge introduced Tom and Matt Lisi, Currency and Coin Appraisers. Tom mentioned that it is not necessary to be a collector to get lucky as many valuable coins and currencies are passed over Teller’s windows. You just have to know which ones are valuable.
Tom spent a good deal of time on the history of money, stating the currency in the U.S. was first made in the civil war. At that time people were hoarding coin because no one knew which side would win the war and the losing side’s currency would be worthless. Tom related a number of very interesting historical stories about money. He mentioned that during the War money used by the troops in Hawaii and Africa was color coded so if it was captured, the government could invalidate it.
Matt spoke about things that increase the value of money. He stated that condition, quantity produced and demand determine its value. A star after the serial number can increase the worth of that particular bill. Most wheat coins issued between 1090 and 1955 with an S on them also have value. Sometimes you may find a bill with different serial numbers on it and those also have value.
Tom then raffled a proof set and an Eisenhower Proof dollar. These were won by Paul Mills.
