This Way Out: U.S. President Barack Obama remained under fire this week over his slow progress on fulfilling his queer-related campaign promises.  In early June his Justice Department filed an offensively worded defense of the equality-denying Defense of Marriage Act – or DOMA – in a federal lawsuit.  Obama has seemingly been in "damage control" ever since.  His ATTORNEY GENERAL ERIC HOLDER did urge a Senate committee this week to advance the Matthew Shepard Act, which would add sexual orientation and gender identity to existing federal hate crime laws.  "Free Speech Radio News" reporter JES BURNS has comments by Holder, along with Alabama Republican Senator JEFF SESSIONS and New York Senate Democrat CHUCK SCHUMER (www.fsrn.org).  Meanwhile, the Washington, D.C.-based CENTER FOR AMERICAN PROGRESS has issued a report called "ENDING 'DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL': PRACTICAL STEPS TO REPEAL THE BAN ON OPENLY GAY MEN AND WOMEN IN THE U.S. MILITARY" (www.americanprogress.org).  One of its authors and a Senior Fellow at the Center, LAWRENCE J. KORB, served as an Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan, and is a longtime critic of the ban.  He discussed their findings during a media teleconference on June 24th, from which we have excerpts  (with brief intro/outro music from "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind" by THE LOVIN' SPOONFUL).

TABC administrator, Fort Worth police chief both pledge 'thorough investigations' into Rainbow Lounge incident Protesters line the sidewalk outside the Rainbow Lounge in Fort Worth on Sunday afternoon, June 28, expressing outrage over a joint TABC/Fort Worth police raid at the gay bar early that morning that left one man hospitalized. Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Administrator Alan Steen on Wednesday, July 1, issued a statement acknowledging that the 26-year-old gay man hospitalized with a head injury following a raid Sunday, June 28 on a Fort Worth gay bar was injured while in the custody of TABC agents. more

This Way Out: U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA had an interesting LGBT Pride month – to say the least.  First he received heavy fire from equality advocates for the horribly offensive language in his Department of Justice’s federal court brief supporting the Defense of Marriage Act.  Several high-profile community leaders registered their disappointment in Obama's failure to deliver on key campaign promises by boycotting an annual LGBT fundraising dinner for the Democratic National Committee.  The president closed out his Pride Month experience on June 29th by hosting an official White House reception for some 300 LGBT movers and shakers.  Obama acknowledged the impatience, and trumpeted what he's done so far.  We have highlights, and some reaction  (with intro/outro music from "Words" by THE BEE GEES)

This Way Out. In celebration of Pride Month, the PACIFICA RADIO ARCHIVES launched an LGBT "time capsule" project.  They put out a call for people in the LOS ANGELES area to come in and record their personal stories, and any messages they'd like to leave behind, for rebroadcast 50 years in the future.  Among the people who responded were two amazing youngsters, 13-year-old BENJAMIN PENZNER and his 16-year-old sister JESSICA, who took the opportuni ty to go into a studio by themselves and interview each other  (and where Benjamin could also demonstrate his classical viola skills) more

The JEAN-NICKOLAUS TRETTER COLLECTION IN GAY, LESBIAN, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER STUDIES was a point of Pride for America's TWIN CITIES during this year's commemoration of the Stonewall Rebellion. The Collection's "FORTY YEARS AFTER STONEWALL" exhibit featured just a portion of the over 30,000 items housed at the University of Minnesota, but it dramatized the importance of preserving the little things that become the building blocks of a movement's history. ERIC CO LLEARY served as Guest Curator for the exhibit.
