Tim Brookover will discutt the third 2009 quarterly meeting of the Community Leaders Networking Group. The meeting will convene on Saturday, August 8, at the Houston GLBT Community Center (3400 Montrose Blvd., Suite 207). The 1-5 p.m. meeting is open to everyone in the community. Please feel free to share this information with others in the community who you think may be interested. Originally designated the Futures Conference Working Group, the Community Leaders Networking Group was first convened and hosted by the Community Center in January 2006 to follow up on resolutions presented at the Conference on Houston's LGBTI Future, held in June 2005. Over the past three years, the quarterly meeting has evolved into an opportunity for community leaders, activists, and advocates to meet in an informal setting and discuss community issues and ideas and to share information on their respective organizations in an informal atmosphere. With the May 2008 meeting, we changed the name to the Community Leaders Networking Group to better reflect the purpose of the meetings. Conversation at the quarterly meetings tends to be free-wheeling, with content largely determined by the individuals who attend. An RSVP is not required, but we appreciate receiving a heads-up from people who plan to join us. The Community Leaders Networking Group is a program of the Houston GLBT Community Center. Free parking is available in the garage adjacent to the 3400 Montrose building. more http://queervoices.org/include/show/images/interview.jpg

Jone Devlin will interview Frederick Hertz, co-author of Making it Legal: A Guide to Same-Sex Marriage, Domestic Partnership & Civil Unionshttp://queervoices.org/include/show/images/interview.jpg

JoOne's initial thoughts on the book:

As you might have already figured out, "Making it Legal" is a pun. It refers both to the political struggle to obtain marriage equality, but also to the personal decision: should a couple continue to cohabitate, or should they³make it legal² by marrying?

Accordingly, the book has two themes:  the first is an historical and sociological look at marriage in the U.S., what it means, what is does, and how the inclusion of gay and lesbian people in the institution is changing it.  Along the way, Fred looks at the state of same sex marriage (and marriage-like statuses) in this country, and around the world, and makes some predictions about the future of marriage equality.  Given that the ³marriage map² is changing month by month, and the hope that the Obam administration might attack DOMA (despite recent indications to the contrary) that would make a pretty interesting interview, I think.

But the book has another theme, one that might be equally interesting to your listeners -- straight and gay.  Because most gay and lesbian couples (at least couples of a certain age, like me Betsy) formed their relationships without giving a second thought to the possibility of someday marrying legally, the sudden shift in legal reality forces sex couples to choose. To marry or not to marry, that is the question.  And in that decision, couples come up against all kinds of issues legal and personal‹that they probably never considered. It¹s not as if gay and lesbian people are the only people who should think about whether or not their intended spouse is "marriage material", but because many of us have been together for so long, our decision making process is instructive.. more

This Way Out: Pansy Division interview billboard [:07]  +  Political pressure again shot down another attempt to at least temporarily suspend U.S. military discharges under "DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL."  MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow spoke with frustrated DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSMAN ALCEE HASTINGS of FLORIDA this week; meanwhile, new research underscores the heretofore unstudied harm the policy may be doing to all enlisted personnel, and the BRITISH Army puts an openly gay trooper on the cover of its official magazine http://queervoices.org/include/show/images/thewayout.jpg

Noel's reason for running for City Council is his love of Houston and a desire to see it grow and prosper through long-term planning, economic and community development and capital improvement.

His career with the City of Houston began in 2004 in the Utility Customer Service branch of Houston’s Public Works and Engineering Department investigating and resolving citizen complaints that were referred to the Mayor, City Council, the Public Works Director and members of the news media.  He now works as an administrative specialist for the Office of the City Engineer.  Noel has extensive knowledge of Houston’s infrastructure – and the public concerns about Houston’s future development.  He will bring that knowledge to City Council without the lengthy learning curve most new Council members face. more

"RENT," based loosely on Puccini's opera "La Boheme" follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village. AIDS and both its physical and emotional complications pervade the lives of Roger (Dave Bermudez), Mimi (Cortney Jacobs), Tom (Johnny Nichols), and Angel (Aicardo Rivera); Maureen (Lendsey Kersey) deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne (Ashley Van Pelt), wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble; Benjamin (Kurtis Von Krueger) has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends; and Mark (Travis Coombs), an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general, always behind the camera recording the events but never playing a part. Joining us on the show will be: David Bermudez (Roger Davis) Lendsey Kersey (Maureen) Kurtis von Kruger (Benny) more http://queervoices.org/include/show/images/interview.jpg

This Way Out. Renewed hopes for the repeal of the U.S. military’s "DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL" policy and the DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT under the Obama Administration have also recalled frustrations with the last Democratic administration.  Then-President BILL CLINTON's effort to fulfill a campaign promise to overturn the ban on military service by open gays and lesbians ultimately led to the discharge of thousands.  He further angered equality activists when he signed the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA.  That law forbids federal recognition of same-gender unions, and allows states to do the same.  Clinton gave the keynote address at the Netroots Nation conference in Pittsburgh last week, which brings together many of the movers and shakers of progressive online politics.  He got an unexpected opportunity to tell his side of the story when he was interrupted by gay blogger Lane Hudson, who demanded to know why the former president supported those oppressive policies (ends with a brief "TWO" ID) http://queervoices.org/include/show/images/thewayout.jpg

The ultra-conservative singing youth group UP WITH PEOPLE, born in response to the liberal counter-culture of the 1960s, has performed for 20 million people worldwide, including four Super Bowl halftime shows, and been parodied on "The Simpsons" and "South Park".  A favorite of both Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, the smile-drenched entertainers are often seen as the embodiment of conservative American ideals.  While the new documentary "Smile 'Til It Hurts" takes a look at Up With People's cult-like beginnings and impact on both society and its own performers, This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE met with former member ERIC ROOS to get the lavender side of the story (with copious Up With People performance clips) more

This show's been a long time coming, and is overdue, as I've never devoted an entire show to Queercore, Homocore, gay punk, or whatever you choose to call it...and those are elusive terms at best. Jon Ginoli was the catalyst. I've been a long-time fan of Pansy Division and last January when I heard that there would be a new CD, new film and Jon's book all released together this Spring, I knew this was the time. Fortunately Jon's book tour made a stop in Houston in May, so I was able to cajole him to stop by my house for an extensive interview. http://queervoices.org/include/show/images/qmh.jpg

And last January I also sounded out my friend Larry Bob, of HolyTitclamps.com, on the project, and he's been of immense help in recommending artists and songs (and providing songs) and on gee, what is queercore? He knew of my fascination with the JD's Top Ten Homocore Hit Parade Tape, and got me in contact with GB Jones, who graciously agreed to an interview about the tape, and JD's...the zine she and Bruce LaBruce created that sparked the genre of Queercore...and of course her pioneering band Fifth Column. And for everyone who's ever researched Queercore and learned about that famous JD's Tape, well, this is their chance to hear every song that appeared on it, and many more featured in the zine during its 6-year run.

PAUL, a high school student and his mother were not going to take anti-gay harassment on campus lying down.  Their more-than-a-year-long legal battle against the Anoka-Hennepin School District came to an end in mid-August with a $25,000 settlement.  As MINNESOTA’s largest school district, its board's decision not to fight a ruling by the state Department of Human Rights is notable, as is the source of the homophobic bullying.  "This Way Out" correspondents DIXIE TREICHEL and JOHN TOWNSEND ["Fresh Fruit"/KFAI-FM] discuss the case with OutFront Minnesota Legal Director PHIL DURAN (with "Teen Freak" intro music by DAVID BROWN)

This Way Out: Lesbian feminist humorist KATE CLINTON can once again say, "I Told You So" -- not just because she's one of the sharpest political wits in the U.S., but because that's the title of her new collection of essays. There's not a hot-button issue you can think of that she doesnt take on, from baptism to waterboarding. She's won the right to her opinions after 30 years of performing, and rabble-rousing in concert with her longtime partner, author/activist Urvashi Vaid. Clinton chatted with "This Way Out" correspondents JOSY CATOGGIO and LYNN BALLEN ["Feminist20Magazine"/KPFK-Los Angles] about the movement, the media... and models (Part 1, ends with a tease for next week's concluding Part 2) http://queervoices.org/include/show/images/thewayout.jpg

Brandon Wolf will talk about a number of issues in the Housotn GLBT issues. He is especially interested in the preservation of our community history, and am pleased with what ARCH is doing. Doing profiles for OutSmart including Annise, Sandi Bubbert, and Steve Kirkland gave me a chance to see rich in experiences their lives are - and how far we've all come. The Dianas story has been fascinating - the story starts in 1953, and finding out how gay people in Houston lived in those pre-Stonewall days has been amazingly inspiring. Han-Net was certainly an interesting 'adventure' - it was exciting when it first became apparent how quickly Houston's GLBT community activists could communicate with each other in this wonderful new electronic age of instantaneous information. more http://queervoices.org/include/show/images/interview.jpg

For over 30 years, Pride Houston has worked at the heart of the local GLBT community to increase awareness and equality in our city. Our initial goals of strengthening equality, building a stronger community and increasing public awareness of our causes still reside at the core of our mission. As we've made progress to these ends, that mission has expanded to include a variety of new initiatives. Ranging from annual charity events to aiding support and counseling networks, our activities continue to promote social awareness and enrich the diversity that helps our community thrive. The Pride organization consists of a number of groups and individuals who work together to produce, manage, and promote the many events hosted by Pride. more http://queervoices.org/include/show/images/interview.jpg

Every student in Texas schools deserves an education free from the harmful physical and emotional effects of harassment and bullying.  However, as schools across the state are reopening for the Fall term, thousands of Texas children dread going to school to face the taunts, jeers, humiliation, physical intimidation and pain inflicted through harassment and bullying. The Equality Texas Foundation is concerned that many school districts’ current policies on bullying and harassment may be inadequate, or inadequately enforced.  Although Texas’ schools have worked to make safe schools a reality by putting in place bullying and harassment policies required by the Texas Education Code, we believe current statutes do not yet adequately address the prevention, intervention, and elimination of bullying and harassment from our schools Although well-defined and communicated policies help deal with bullying and harassment when it happens, a comprehensive program is necessary for prevention. Programs that integrate a data-tracking system for bullying and harassment incidents, a robust district-level policy that is consistently enforced, and a research-proven program to educate both students and staff about bullying and harassment have been found to be the most effective. On Wednesday, September 23, 2009, the Equality Texas Foundation will host the second of several statewide open community forums on safe schools. This Way Out: "To march or not to march?" That's the question that's been confronting the LGBT community in the U.S. since a group of activists announced their plans for a major demonstration in Washington, D.C. on October 11th. With only a few months to organize the National Equality March, the idea was met with skepticism by some and enthusiasm by others. The reasons for and against marching on Washington were remarkably similar to the debate before the first such action. In FEBRUARY 1979 – at the kind of gathering critics of this year’s march have found missing from the process – local activists from around the country sent delegates to a national conference in PHILADELPHIA to make the final decision (veteran radio journalist BILL BOGUN reported from the City of Brotherly Love, with music from "We Shall Go Forth" by MARGIE ADAM)

After the decisive meeting in Philadelphia, the 1979 NATIONAL MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR LESBIAN & GAY RIGHTS took off like wildfire. And at a time when there was virtually no queer visibility in many parts of the U.S., a group of marchers who traveled across the country to Washington aboard the "FREEDOM TRAIN" experienced the journey of a lifetime (with music from "Woyaya" by ART GARFUNKEL) more http://queervoices.org/include/show/images/thewayout.jpg

Out in the Silence captures the remarkable chain of events that unfold when the announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson’s wedding to another man ignites a firestorm of controversy in his small Pennsylvania hometown.

Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson’s journey dramatically illustrates the universal challenges of being an outsider in a conservative environment and the transformation that is possible when those who have long been constrained by a traditional code of silence summon the courage to break it. more

GUEST: Joe Wilson, Social activist and filmmaker announces his same-sex marriage in the newspaper of his small hometown in the hills of western Pennsylvania. When it results in controversy, Joe returns to Oil City to engage with traditional values activists, local leadership and townsfolk and finds that change doesn't come easy.

Since I began QMH in 2000 this is my tenth show entirely devoted to the music of Transgendered Artists. And I love doing shows like this, as it not only gives me a chance to share their music, but also to share a bit of their lives and journeys. In 2007 I did a series of four shows in a row, so now I'm going to sort of catch up with music mostly newer than that. And I've got I think some very interesting feature interviews, with Radford Bishop of the queercore band Tough Tough Skin, and with acoustic rock artist Angela Motter. http://queervoices.org/include/show/images/qmh.jpg

Gay marriage is once again up for debate. In Maine, voters next month will decide whether lesbian and gay people can get married, and polls show a very close contest. This Way Out: Billboard for the "Rainbow Minute" and Elliott Tiber interview (with a brief Tiber tease) [:10] + For a man with some of the most highly touted liberal credentials in the world, opposition to marriage equality has become “an untenable position.” That's what former U.S. President BILL CLINTON told CNN's ANDERSON COOPER during a wide-ranging September 25th interview. Clinton cited the legal and political issues involved, but said his own personal friendships with same-gender couples had the most impact on his c hange of heart [2:28] + "TWO" I.D. by award-winning writer EDMUND WHITE http://queervoices.org/include/show/images/thewayout.jpg

We'll "Take the A Train" to honor gay "JAZZ MASTER BILLY STRAYHORN" in a "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR and BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by GIZ BOWE)

The word "character" could've been coined to describe ELLIOTT TIBER. His book was the inspiration for "Taking Woodstock," a cinematic celebration of the landmark cultural event. Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's movie makes Elliott a "character" in that sense of the word, too, portrayed by actor/comedian Demetri Martin. "This Way Out" entertainment reporter STEVE PRIDE got some behind-the-scenes dish from Tiber about the movie, and the legendary concert itself [with intro/outro music by RICHIE HAVENS, ending with a tease for next week's concluding Part 2]. more
