If we expect students to navigate international waters, we need to give them an international education that meets the highest standards.…" Former U.S. Secretary of Education, Rod Paige Study Abroad: The Bradley University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is strongly committed to students’ experiential learning. A feature of that commitment involves offering an award program that helps to financially support undergraduate participation in study abroad programming. Study abroad offers many potential benefits:
Purpose of the Award: To provide outstanding College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) students with financial support that encourages participation in study abroad programs that are civic-based. Civic engagement involves action that addresses public and social concerns. Examples include, but are not limited to, study abroad placements that incorporate service-learning or non-profit/NGO experiential learning opportunities. A representative listing of study abroad programs eligible for this award is found at the end of this document. Other programs (including those unaffiliated with Bradley) that have a civic engagement component may also be eligible. Please contact the International Programs Office, Room 325, Caterpillar Global Communications Center, (309) 677-2562 for more information about program eligibility. Applicants should indicate the civic engagement component of the study abroad program in the application essay. The civic engagement emphasis is consistent with the LAS mission of fostering student development within “a value-centered interdisciplinary, intercultural, and humanistic context that puts career goals of students into a societal context in ways that will have significant impact on contemporary and future society”. Eligibility: Any degree-seeking undergraduate currently enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours) at Bradley University who:
Award: The undergraduate awardee will receive a $2,500 award to defray the costs associated with an academic study abroad program offered during the Fall and/or Spring semesters through the International Programs Office at Bradley University. A $1,250 award is available for applicants to participate in study abroad programs during the Summer sessions (minimum of four weeks is required). The award can be applied toward instructional costs and/or additional program costs (such as airfare, living expenses, on-site travel, and/or housing). Students must sign an agreement that all expenditures of the award will be applied to direct costs of the study abroad program. Selection criteria: The three criteria used for making award decisions are (a) academic preparation, (b) a one to two-page page essay describing what the applicant hopes to gain from the study abroad experience, and (c) a one to two-page Letter of Recommendation written by a faculty member who is familiar with the student’s academic work and plan of study. Preference is given for first-time study abroad students. Commitments: The awardee agrees to adhere to the Bradley University Standards of Conduct Abroad. The Standards are available from the International Programs Office. The award will be revoked if the student fails to enroll in the program or withdraws from the program. If withdrawal occurs after fund disbursement, the student will be billed for the award amount. At the conclusion of the study abroad experience, the awardee will write a five page essay or prepare a creative product (such as a short video) describing the academic and personal benefits of the experience. The awardee will submit the essay or creative product, electronically or in person, to the applicant’s faculty reference and to Dr. Derek Montgomery, Associate Dean of Engaged Learning, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Bradley Hall 233, montg@fsmail.bradley.edu. The student agrees to have his or her name, photograph, and study abroad information appear on Bradley University websites and printed materials. The student also agrees to complete an evaluative assessment of the study abroad experience. Below are study abroad programs that are affiliated with Bradley University and contain a civic engagement component. They are eligible for this award. Civic engagement involves action that addresses public and social concerns. Your application essay should indicate the civic engagement component of your intended study abroad program (see Application Cover Form for more information). Additional programs with a civic engagement component, including those unaffiliated with Bradley, may also be eligible for this award.
