Summer 2016 South Asia Law Fellow Application

Accountability Counsel seeks Law Fellows to work in Washington, D.C. to support our South Asia Program during the Summer of 2016. Positions are unpaid, though academic credit may be arranged.

Requirements

Applicants are requested to have relevant work experience and/ or academic background in at least some of the areas in which we work: international law, development and economics; public policy; and environmental and human rights. Applicants are required to have excellent communication, research, writing and critical thinking skills.

Job Description

Our Law Fellows will work with Accountability Counsel’s South Asia Program staff toward our mission: Accountability Counsel amplifies the voices of communities around the world to protect their human rights and environment. As advocates for people harmed by internationally-financed projects, we specialize in non-judicial complaint offices established to receive community complaints.  We accomplish our mission through three programs: Work in Communities (which includes our South Asia program) assists communities with all aspects of effectively using complaint offices. Our Policy Advocacy program works to ensure that those offices are accessible, independent, transparent, fair and effective tools for justice. Finally, our Resources program provides trainings and tools for communities and their advocates to understand how complaint offices work.

Our Washington, D.C.-based Law Fellows will primarily support Accountability Counsel's collaboration with our clients based in South Asia in filing complaints and our development of resource materials for communities and advocates. Law Fellows will work on legal research assignments and fact memos, and may participate in meetings with community members, international institutions, and NGO colleagues as opportunities arise. We expect students to work full-time for a minimum of 10 weeks.
