Results of the surveys completed on CFNC will help the student build a profile that will connect him/her to the career descriptions and college programs and majors available across North Carolina colleges/universities. Don’t wait until the senior year to make decisions about where to apply based on majors offered at the colleges. Students should complete the Interest Profiler, Career Cluster Survey, Basic Skills Survey, Transferable Skills Survey, Work Values Sorter and The Career Key for self and career exploration. *Visit CFNC.ORG cfnc.org/static/pdf/home/sc/pdf/college_prep_programs.pdf – For a comprehensive manual of college preparation programs in North Carolina. Over 120 pages of college preparation opportunities for middle and high school students, offered throughout the state, are listed with extensive information on how to register for the programs, the target audience and other details. Some of these opportunities will be described below but to be aware of all opportunities in the state, be sure to consult this online directory. *Use PSAT results to practice for the SAT. Using the access code on your PSAT Score Report, create a My College Quickstart account at the CollegeBoard website by visiting quickstart.collegeboard.org/posweb/login.jsp. The PSAT is given the third week in October each year. All 11th graders take the PSAT at no charge. 10th graders can sign up in the guidance office in September for $20. *All 10th graders sit for the PLAN test in October and all 11th graders sit for the ACT in March. Your PLAN results give you an indication of how you will score on the ACT. Practice for the ACT is available http://www.actstudent.org/onlineprep/ for $24.95 for a year’s access to practice tests with real ACT test questions, essays, comprehensive content review for each of the ACT's four required tests—English, Math, Reading, and Science, diagnostic test and personalized Study Path. *Start an Extra-Curricular Profile/Resume to keep up with your extra-curricular activities, honors, awards, athletic participation, volunteer and community service, and work experiences. SUMMER PROGRAMS AND YEAR-LONG OPPORTUNITIES TO VOLUNTEER, GAIN LEADERSHIP SKILLS or BE IMMERSED IN AN ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE: (TBD** - expired deadlines will be updated periodically. Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics is a cost-free, statewide 4 week program of the UNC system that culminates in a research project/presentation on a current topic in a STEM field of study. Held on the campuses of Appalachian, East Carolina, NCCU, and UNCC, student’s custodial parent or guardian must live in NC by December 1 of the application period. Apply online by January 31, 2016 at summerventures.org and contact your school counselor to let him/her know you need an online recommendation. NC State - The College of Textiles Summer Textile Exploration Program consists of four one-week sessions for rising high school seniors. Up to 30 students per week are chosen based on their academic success, extracurricular activities and their interest in NC State and science-related fields. Online applications may be submitted starting January 1, 2016.
All materials should be received in the Office of Student Services no later than Friday May 1, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. The cost of the program is ONLY $150. This covers lodging, transportation, materials, and several meals during the program. Students are encouraged to bring approximately $150 in spending money to cover evening activities and meals not covered by the program fee. The NC State College of Agriculture & Life Sciences is pleased to announce Summer College in Biotechnology and Life Sciences 2016. Rising juniors or seniors who may be interested in the program should apply via the SCIBLS website: www.cals.ncsu.edu/scibls. Summer College in Biotechnology and Life Sciences is a four week summer program offered on site by the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences at North Carolina State University where high school rising juniors and seniors interested in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics college major participate in a meaningful academic experience. Application closes on May 1st. NC State University Shelton Challenge – a one-week summer experience (7 weeks in June and July) for rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school. The core curriculum focuses on Leadership Roles and Accountability, Team Building, Leadership Styles and Situations, Social Responsibility, Integrity as a Leader, Public Speaking, Changing Behaviors, and Goal Setting. To obtain an application or for more information, visit www.ncsu.edu/sheltonleadership Redesigning Our Future National Environmental Summit is a 5-day residential camp held on the campus of Catawba College in Salisbury. The camp, held July 12-16, 2016, is open to students ages 14 to 17 years old. Early application discount if you apply online by April 1. Students must apply online at CenterfortheEnvironment.org, choose your focus areas: Arts, Botany, Economics, History, Health, Music, Philosophy, Theater, Zoology. Students are encouraged to travel by train (mass transit) to Salisbury. http://www.centerfortheenvironment.org/redesigning-our-future.html The Broyhill Leadership Conference is a five-day, four-night conference, high school students (rising 10-12 graders) are challenged to learn, develop, and practice leadership skills that they will take with them and use for the rest of their lives. BLC will be held on the campus of Wingate Universtiy from June 19-23 and Queens University from July 6-10. The registration fee is $280 and it includes the curriculum handbook, and supplies for all the activities you will do during the week. It also includes your 4 nights lodging and 11 meals (dinner on the first day through breakfast on the last day). BLC is an incredible value that you’ll not find anywhere else! The Martha Guy Summer Institute for Future Business Leaders is an outstanding summer program offered by Appalachian State University from July 10-30. The institute includes a trip to Washington, DC or New York City. Applications are due February 26 and are available at www.marthaguy.appstate.ed Teens Westward Bound – A 23-day discovery of the great American west. Application steps to take: Step 1: All applicants must be recommended by a past participant. After a person is recommended they will receive a letter of invitation to apply, application form, and a detailed brochure describing the program. Step 2: Prospective participants should complete the TWB application form and return along with letters of recommendation from their peers and adults. Step 3: Prospective participants should make every effort to attend a Slide Show Presentation along with their parents. At the presentation each applicant will be participate in a video interview. Those unable to attend should mail a picture to the Director, Dennis Deaton. During the month of March those that did not complete a video interview will be contacted for an interview via telephone. Step 4: On April 1st, all applicants will receive in writing the status of their acceptance. Step 5: On May 1st, all accepted participants will receive a complete comprehensive mailing concerning further preparation of their Teens Westward Bound experience. The HOBY NC West Leadership Seminar – Current 10th grader is selected and an alternate; The North Carolina HOBY Leadership Seminar is a 3-day leadership program for approximately 90 rising high school juniors held each June in Winston-Salem. HOBY Ambassadors have an opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills, learn about their personal leadership styles, and form an appreciation for community service. They attend panel sessions featuring prominent speakers from our government, businesses, media, and educational communities. They participate in leadership development workshops and activities. HOBY Ambassadors also participate in a community service project and learn how they can lead in service in their own communities. As a result of their experiences, the high school Ambassadors return to their schools and communities eager to make a difference and share what they have learned. The HOBY NC West Seminar takes place in June in the Winston-Salem area. If interested, please visit Mrs. Pierce in guidance. HOBY Junior Staff Application - The 2015 HOBY North Carolina West Leadership Seminar will take place Friday, June 10 through Sunday, June 12. The event will be held at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, with nearly 125 sophomores from western North Carolina high schools in attendance. We tell Ambassadors that what they get out of the seminar will correlate directly with their level of participation in the activities, and you as a volunteer will help them interact to get the most of this experience. The application for 2016 Junior Staff is now available! You will also need to fill out an online volunteer application with HOBY National. The 2016 Tar Heel Boys State program will take place June 19-25 at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC. Washington University in St. Louis Summer Experiences – Various programs including the High School Summer Scholars Program, a 5-week program for academically talented students to enroll in two college courses and experience various educational opportunities, the High School Summer Institutes, allowing students an avenue to explore a specialized interest during the summer, and High School College Access, providing an opportunity for juniors and seniors to take undergraduate courses at WUSTL. University of Southern California Summer Programs- offers students a preview of “freshman year” through its college immersion experience. Programs are designed to combine college level course work, academic field trips, and structured extracurricular activities. This program offers 4 and 2 week courses in a variety of subjects from which students choose one course for intense study. Courses are interactive, engaging and challenging, and students receive 3 units of trasferrable USC elective credit upon successful completion of the 4-week program. Union Power Cooperative Youth Tour – an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. from June 13 to June 19 for high school juniors. The group will meet with congressional representatives, visit government agencies, and historical sites, as they learn more about government and cooperatives. To be considered for the Youth Tour, students must fill out an application and write a 250-500 word essay. Winners will be announced in April. Columbia College Summer Leadership Institute – 3, week-long summer residential leadership programs for young women helping them establish the foundation of leadership, build their leadership framework and become a future-ready leader. Cornell University Summer College - offers precollege programs for talented high school students. Hillsdale College high school study abroad programs – Hillsdale College faculty guide participants through England, France or Italy. Trips include both classroom settings for lectures and discussions and on-site visits to castle grounds, museums, battlefields, and other historical landmarks. The NC Community Development Initiative invites applications for paid internships from rising high school seniors (current 11th graders) for its Youth Leadership Program. Available to students throughout the state, this program is designed to introduce students to the non-profit sector and consider careers related to leadership and community economic development. This six-week, paid summer internship includes a meaningful work experience at a non-profit organization in the student’s home county and leadership training and development sessions every 2 weeks in Raleigh. Seniors – UNC Charlotte Summer School; UNC Charlotte admits visiting students in the summer even if they are headed to a different school in fall. Admitted UNC Charlotte freshmen are welcome in summer too. Classes in the summer sessions are typically smaller than in other terms allowing students to transition more easily into college. Federal Service Language Academy Your students have the opportunity to attend the Federal Service Language Academy (FSLA) at the University of North Georgia this summer. They have a choice of learning Arabic, Chinese, Russian, German, Korean, French, Cherokee, Japanese or Portuguese. They will also learn about federal service careers where knowing a critical foreign language and culture is important, such as the FBI, Department of State, CIA, the military, and more. For three weeks, your rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors will live in a modern residence hall on our scenic campus in Dahlonega, Georgia, site of the first major gold rush in the U.S. They will be taught by highly trained instructors using communicative language teaching methods.
