ASUS
Tech Co Year
DESCRIPTION
ASUS is a worldwide top-three consumer notebook vendor and maker of the world’s best-selling, most award-winning, motherboards. A leading enterprise in the new digital era, ASUS designs and manufactures products that perfectly meet the needs of today’s digital home and office, with a broad portfolio that includes motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, displays, desktop and all-in-one PCs, notebooks, netbooks, servers, multimedia devices, wireless solutions, networking devices, tablets and smartphones. Driven by innovation and committed to quality, ASUS won 4,256 awards in 2013 and is widely credited with revolutionizing the PC industry with its Eee PC™. ASUS has more than 12,500 employees around the globe with a world-class R&D team of 3,800 engineers. Company revenue for 2012 was approximately US$14 billion.
Entry
By pioneering many new innovations, trends, and technologies that have had a genuine impact on its customers' lives and the Earth at large, ASUS hopes to garner mindshare as well as market share.
ASUS continues to deliver on its “In Search of Incredible” promise as they strive to become the world’s most admired leading enterprise in the new digital era. The “In Search of Incredible: campaign, launched in 2011, symbolizes Asus’ “Design Thinking – Start with People” philosophy. It extends beyond product design and development, sales and marketing, and illustrates the ASUS commitment to making life better through innovation.
Changes in Strategy
Worldwide sales of PCs are declining steadily. Sales of smartphones, for which Taiwanese companies control less than a fifth of the market, are rising briskly. Tablets based on the Android operating system, which most Taiwanese companies, with the exception of Asus, have been slow to embrace, are also on the same upward trajectory.
After Rising to Prominence as the Creator of the Netbook, Asus is setting its sights on a New Chapter With Hybrid Devices. Asus ended netbook production in the last year as tablets dominated the market. The Consumer Electronics Association recently said about 80% of all computers sold by 2016 will be tablets. Currently, 40% of adults online own a tablet, according to CEA's quarterly tablet survey.
Asus also conceded that it can't keep making Windows RT tablets that folk simply don't want to buy.
The company’s goal is to change the perception of Asus as just a low-price alternative -- and the grandfather of the netbook -- to a desirable lifestyle brand.
New Innovative Products
Innovation is key to the success of ASUS. This year ASUS chairman Jonney Shih raised the bar once more with the announcement of several new products at CES 14, including:
-
The ASUS TAICHI is an Ultrabook with a double-sided display that allows it to be used as a tablet when the lid is closed.
-
The ASUS Transformer Book Trio is a dual-OS ultraportable that can be used as a Windows 8/Android notebook, as a Windows 8 desktop PC by simply connecting the PC Station dock to an external monitor.
-
ASUS Transformer Book Duet (TD300) is an extremely capable device that is able to function as an Android or Windows 8.1 tablet or notebook. ASUS provides users the ability to run supported Android applications and a vast array of native Windows applications.
-
The ASUS Zenbook Ultrabook houses a powerful Intel® Core™ processor, fast SSD storage and a 2560 x 1440 WQHD capacitive multi-touch 13.3-inch display.
-
ZenFone, a range of high value 4 to 6-inch smartphones embodying the ASUS commitment to creating incredible experiences that transform expectations
-
PadFone mini, a 4-inch smartphone that transforms effortlessly into a 7-inch tablet with all the power and resources needed for both phone and tablet applications. PadFone mini supports dual SIMs, so users have the freedom to maintain two distinct phone numbers without requiring two handsets.
-
ASUS ZenUI, an exclusive user interface, made its debut in the PadFone mini and ZenFone. With simplified icons and menus, gorgeous device-matching color themes, and a clever What’s Next feature that helps users keep track of their lives, ZenUI is designed to help users make the most of the functionality enhancements packed into every ZenFone and PadFone mini.
-
Asus’ Republic of Gaming (ROG) Swift PG278Q, a stunning premium gaming monitor with 2560×1440 (WQHD) resolution and NVIDIA® G-SYNC™ technology with unique ROG design and features.
-
The ASUS MB168 Series Portable USB-powered Monitor wowed judges with its slim, lightweight design and the ability to receive power and video signals supplied over a standard USB 3.0 cable.
-
The Asus Miracast Dongle, about the same size as a standard pen, provides dual-band wireless streaming for lag-free transmission of Full HD movies, videos, and photos from mobile devices onto a HDTV or monitor.
Asus also announced its Open Cloud Computing (AOCC) platform in 2013. AOCC seamlessly aggregates cloud storage from different providers into a unified virtual service, drastically simplifies sharing photos and other media with multiple devices, and provides comprehensive online help and troubleshooting tools to solve all manner of technical problems.
Asus also strengthened its partnership with Google by announcing several upcoming Chromebox devices.
-
a $179 Haswell-based Chromebox PC to compete directly with Samsung and LG. The price will differentiate Asus and help the firm attract consumers and educators.
-
a $1,000 “Chromebox for meetings” targeting business customers looking for a video conference solution. The device will come with a 1080p webcam, microphone, remote and full keyboard. “Chromebox for meetings” gives Asus a differentiated entry point into the enterprise market.
And in the second half of this year VivoBook and the Transformer Trio, a three-in-one desktop, laptop, and tablet, will receive new marketing pushes under Asus' "In Search of Incredible" tagline.
Results
ASUS has been recognized as the number-one Taiwanese brand in the Best Taiwan Global Brands Awards 2013. This marks the eleventh continuous year that ASUS has made the top-three list of international Taiwanese brands.
17 Asus products received the prestigious 2014 CES Innovations Award, a clear recognition of ASUS’s people-centric, innovative design-driven approach to its products and services.
Asus jumped to No. 3 in worldwide tablet shipments, with a 7.4% market share, behind Samsung and Apple. Asus reported year-over-year growth had more than quadrupled; it posted the biggest increase among the top five tablet vendors.
Asus bucked the trend in a declining PC market with stable shipments, up 16 percent in the first quarter from a year ago. That was even as worldwide PC shipments fell 11.2 percent. In overall portable PC sales, Asus ranks fifth in the world but aspires to be in the top three by 2014.
“We remain optimistic about the desktop and laptop market, but our priority is to make the company’s smartphone business turn a profit next year,” Asustek CFO David Chang said. "Asus aims to grow its smartphone business from about 1 million units this year to 5 million units next year," added Jerry Shen, Asustek CEO. Asus uses a four-pronged smartphone strategy that includes quality, innovation, user experience, and price. Asus is exclusively partnering with AT&T to release the PadFone X in the U.S. in 2014
Asus also plans to invest in wearable devices and will focus on the smartwatch market first, but its main focus will remain consumers PCs and mobile devices.
Restating the ASUS brand promise, Mr Shih said: “ASUS is passionate about technology and driven by innovation. We dream, we dare and we strive to create an effortless and joyful digital life for everyone. We’re always in search of incredible ideas and experiences — and we aspire to deliver the incredible in everything we do.”
In Search of Incredible has led to some incredible innovations, brand awareness and sales success as Asus transforms itself once again for the future.
