BFA ACTING ON-CAMPUS CALLBACK REQUIREMENTS:
The BFA Acting callback auditions will consist of three parts:
One:
Students are required to perform 2 contrasting monologues for a total of 4 minutes. Students may also be asked to perform a third monologue and should have one prepared. One of the monologues must be a classical piece; Shakespeare is preferred.
Two:
Physical Acting, vocal skills, and ensemble work: In a group, the auditioning students will work through a series of exercises to evaluate their physical and vocal range, and their ability to work collaboratively within a company. (For this stage of work, students should bring clothes they can move in.)
Three:
Interview: This is an opportunity for the students and faculty to get to know each other, and for the faculty to answer questions the student may have about the program.
BFA MUSICAL THEATRE ON-CAMPUS CALLBACK REQUIREMENTS
HEADSHOT/RESUME
*PLEASE have a current photo.
*PLEASE state on your resume any music theory or sight singing training.
*PLEASE indicate any instruments you play, and for how long.
*PLEASE be specific about any dance training you have had.
VOCAL REQUIREMENT
Choose 2 contrasting songs from Musical Theatre repertoire, one traditional and one contemporary (ballad and up-tempo), no longer than 32-bars each. Faculty may ask for more of the song or a different song, so please bring other music with you just in case. Faculty panel will decide if you present the second song. We are looking for good story telling as well as a strong vocal instrument. Please make specific choices that communicate the stakes of the song. We suggest working on your songs as a monologue.
An accompanist will be provided for all on-campus auditions. All other cities will require a recording of the accompaniment on CD. We will supply a sound system, but you are more than welcome to bring your own. You may not sing a cappella.
***Please do not sing: Memory, Shy, Think of Me, Adelaide’s Lament, I Don’t Know How to Love Him, I Can’t Say No, Always True To You Darling in My Fashion, Gimme Gimme, Defying Gravity or anything from Spring Awakening or Jekyll and Hyde.****
ACTING REQUIREMENT FOR MUSICAL THEATRE
Two contrasting monologues that are one minute each (comedic/dramatic). Please choose age appropriate material. We are looking for simple, honest work based in truth. The faculty panel will decide if you present the second monologue.
In addition to your songs and monologues, you may be engaged in a short interview or a work session on your material.
DANCE REQUIREMENT
The dance audition will consist of a dance class (warm-up and floor work) ending with a short combination from a Broadway musical demonstrating Ballet and Jazz Technique. Candidates will dance in groups of 4. Please start to warm-up as you enter the room.
Candidates should dress in basic dancewear. Women should wear a character shoe or jazz shoe, solid colored leotard with dance pants and tap shoes, if you can. Men should wear jazz or ballet shoes, a form-fitting solid colored t-shirt or tank, jazz pant or tights, and tap shoes, again, if you can. No shorts or bulky, oversized sweat-pants/sweatshirts are permitted. Sneakers are not allowed.
AUDITION TIPS
Keep your choices grounded and simple. Let us see who you are.
*Stay away from dialects in your monologues.
* Pick monologues from plays, and read the whole play. Don’t pick monologues from anthologies that are not from plays.
*Your monologues should be distinctly different in tone and character.
*Choose songs and monologues that are age appropriate.
*Do not choose material from current hit shows on Broadway or songs that are uniquely associated with particular artists. Songs like “Defying Gravity”, “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, “Don’t Rain on My Parade”.
* What to wear. Look your best but don’t over dress. Ladies, please do not wear extremely high heels. Choose an outfit that makes you feel comfortable. This means something nice and neat but casual—something you feel free to move in, but that is also flattering to your physique.
*Rehearse your material in the shoes and the outfit you will be performing in before your auditions.
*Please have your audition music in plastic sheets in a binder so it is easy for the accompanist to read as well as turn the pages.
*Make sure your music is in your key and is clearly marked with all cuts and repetitions. Always set a tempo for the accompanist by singing the first few notes of the song for them.
*We look forward to meeting you in person and seeing your work.
