Now that we have been studying the Atlantic slave trade, I want you to describe the conditions that the slaves went through. I want you to do this through a project, where you will go back in time as if you were around during the trade. Your task is to try and convince the 1700-1800’s people to abolish the slave trade. Your project will need to be argumentative. Your claim is: the Atlantic slave trade must be abolished. Your evidence and reasoning will come from our image analysis, class lecture, and close read of Equiano. I am going to give you 3 options for how you can complete this project: Write a letter to a political leader You can choose to write a letter to a political leader of the time urging them to abolish the slave trade. Your letter should be in a traditional format and should be addressed to either the President or the King. You should begin it with Dear Mr. President or Dear Your Majesty. The letter should be 1-page. Create an abolitionist poster This poster should be created as if it were going to be placed on a post or window in the 1700-1800s. The poster should be an advertisement that clearly argues against the slave trade. Because the poster will be less writing, it is required that you have some sort of an image on it. Write a song or poem During this time period (before tv and the internet) many people used songs or poems to spread their message. Your song/poem must be at least 6 stanzas long and must clearly argue against the slave trade. If it is a song, it must have a clearly defined verse/chorus structure. Regardless of which option you chose, your project must contain the following: A clearly defined argument against the slave trade At least 4 pieces of evidence from class to support your claim Descriptive language that captures the readers/viewers/listeners interests (an image if doing the poster) Creativity and effort
