1.) There were a whopping 1.3 billion international travelers in 2017 2.) Tourism contributed to about 8% of all greenhouse gases by providing accommodations, dining, transportation, recreational activities and souvenirs to tourists. Some direct examples are hotels, airplanes, and theme parks. Some indirect examples would be internationally shipping water bottles from France to the US for US tourists. 3.) 8% of all greenhouse emissions comes from tourism 4.) Tourism organizations can actively push for the cleanest sustainable energy use. Some examples are development and deployment of low carbon sustainable energy, fleet renewal, and removal of infrastructure inefficiencies and refurbishments. 5.) Some steps being taken by tourism businesses to reduce their environmental impact is to switch to more sustainable energy and to reduce infrastructure inefficiencies. This may be more successful in the long run, but at the moment it only reduces emissions by 1.5% annually, which is insufficient. 6.) International tourism grows 4% every year. 7.) Travelers can do 3 things to plan/adjust their trips to reduce their environmental impact: Sustainable travel involves traveling less, but with an extended length of stay per journey, choosing destinations close to home and using less aviation. 8.) I think that tourism organizations continue to use practices that are harmful to the environment simply because it is more profitable that way. While making efforts to switch to a more sustainable energy source is noble, it is also very expensive and would take years to get tourist organizations around the world to completely switch to sustainable energy plans. 9.) A local tourist destination in my area is Anna Marie Island. Ways that this destination could reduce its carbon foot print is simply to stop tearing down trees for more parking spaces. When this occurred in May of 2019, I do not believe that the infrastructure developers were considering that tearing down the Australian pines trees for more parking spaces would cause extreme habitat loss for local ecosystems, cause rapid soil erosion of the beach shore, and overall cause higher greenhouse emissions. This is because now that a lot of trees were torn down, there are less trees that are able to produce oxygen as fast as co2 is produced. 10.) Travelers that choose to stick with green airlines and buy green products are having a positive environmental impact.
